Ultimates 3 #1-5 discussion [Loeb/Madureira] [spoilers]

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 discussion [spoilers]

I like Darwyn Cooke in general, really. Absolute DC, even having never read an issue of a DC book before was really, really, good; especially read all at once. I've researched a little about 100 Bullets, and the concept alone is incredibly original. And if Garth Ennis wrote even close to the same caliber as the origin of the Darkness it's probably worth picking up.

Now I just need one title to start with...

Punisher MAX is the best Ennis ever written.

I mean by miles.

And miles.

It's that good.

Ennis said that he was born to write that character.

I think the Darkness is one of his weakest points.

100 Bullets is not what you expect but it is very good.

I also highly suggest Astonishing X-men and Planetary.

Now this is what Ultimate 3 thread should be, discussing other books that are actually good.

I liked the Darkness, so that makes Punsher MAX a must read. What is Planetary?

Yeah.... sorry. So... that wasp, huh? Showed up in issue 2 much? And she's still white? At least it would be internally consistent.

*templerubs*

there are only two good panels in the entire book...

Mad can at least draw Mystique/Widow well...

Ok, I just got this sent to me in the mail. I agree with all your gripes but I think my personal favorite has to be Captain America's line to Sabretooth. The whole watch your mouth in front of the ladies thing. Oy. I also find it ironic that Sabretooth would say Suck It and get threatened with death while Cap's own teammate Hawkeye say sons of *****es literally two seconds after he says that. And I hate emo Hawkeye, emo Spider-Man was the reason Spider-Man 3 sucked, emos just suck in general.

I am glad however that U3 is having a good side by giving us the oppurtunity to suggest fantastic books to Pearl. (Fantastic Avatar by the way. Any Conchords fan is my friend). Not sure if you're into DC at all (it's far superior to Marvel at the moment), but I suggest Justice Society of America, Green Lantern and Action Comics to you, all of which are superb.

Back on topic:
LLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 discussion [spoilers]

I don't know why I never got into DC. Probably 'cause they get a lot more attention to being campy by those outside of comics. I have heard a lot of good things about the GL crossover...

Blargh. There are too many of these, I could never get all of them.

Planetary is a Wildstorm (DC) title written by Warren Ellis and drawn by John Cassady.

It's about 3 people exploring the unknown and keeping secrets. It full of dozens of pop culture references and analogs. Including Godzilla & Monster Island, Tarzan, John Woo movies, The Fantastic Four, 80's horror comics (Hellblazer), giant insect movies, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Doc Savage, James Bond, and a lot more.

It's 25 issues. I thought there was going to be a 26?

And 3 crossover books. The only one really worth is the Batman one.

There are 3 trades and the crossover book out.

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 discussion [spoilers]

Interesting. I have the first two trades of the league of extraordinary gentlemen waiting to be read after Watchmen, so I guess I'd understand those references. But I can't say I've even heard of Monster Island, John Woo, or Doc Savage. Does the pop culture make the book?

Uuhh, well, if you don't understand those references then, yeah.... You'll probably be missing out on pretty much everything.

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

That does sound pretty good... Do we learn anything about Book at all? It would open up old wounds to realize I'll never know his story...

Nothing really about Book's past. It just features him helping out on a job (against his better judgement) and then leaving the ship (to set up his absence on Serenity in the movie). I just hope Whedon will tell Book's backstory (as well as more Firefly/Serenity stories in general) in comic form.

Y:The Last Man I've been meaning to pick up for a little while after I bought the first trade. Vaughn certainly has a talent for comics.

Its my all time favorite.

I'm not sure, but your post seems like you think Ennis writes 100 BULLETS - he doesn't, it's Brian Azzarello.

Monster Island - you know Godzilla right? Mothra? Basically monster island is where all those rubber monsters come from.

John Woo is a film director who made loads of over-the-top action Hong Kong flicks and then made more in America.

Doc Savage is a famous pulp hero but I know nothing about him.

Basically, each issue of PLANETARY has these archaeologists finding something strange, and that strange thing is always a homage to something else; Monster Island, The Justice League, 1950s sci-fi B-movies, the Hulk, the UK comics of the 1980s and so on. Some you'll get, some you won't. I, for example, didn't get most of the references in the first issue, and some very obvious references completely eluded me for ages.

But I always thought it was amazing. Because it just is. You don't need to know anything to appreciate it. It really works very well.

Sorry, I meant to refer to Punisher MAX.

That's good to know.

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 discussion [spoilers]

All I have to say is that at least it was better than the first one, which isn't saying much now that i think about it.
