Ultimates 3 #1-5 discussion [Loeb/Madureira] [spoilers]

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

Handing over the reigns of the UU to an incompetant tool like Loeb doesn't make much sense either.

As Kackalicki says; Loeb = Money. Love it or hate it, Loeb's ULTIMATES 3 is the #1 US seller.

Same reason Michael Bay keeps making movies... they make money. If anything, putting Loeb on it insures that they want to keep producing the titles.

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

I honestly doubt that - the titles are still selling strong. Cancelling them wouldn't make much sense. The reason these rumours persist is because Loeb seems to have single-handedly been given the keys to the Ultimate universe (save Spidey). Bendis is doing his ULTIMATE ORIGIN which seems to be the last bit of the original Bendis/Millar/Quesada/Jemas hybrid that was the original ultiverse. Loeb is now ramping up his ULTIMATUM crossover which is supposed to be 'big', which is why he turned ULTIMATE POWER and ULTIMATES 3 both into set-ups for the crossover instead of them being stand-alone volumes, and he's taking over ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR to help set up the crossover. Then there's the usual hyperbole of who may die.

What I would expect is a bit of a shake-up in team status quos and the universe itself, but I'd be surprised if they did anything like cancel the books because, as I say, they sell well, and ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN is going nowhere.

Basically, Loeb 'finished' ULTIMATE POWER then did ULTIMATES 3, which are, perhaps, not just some of the worst Ultimate comics, but some of the worst comics ever - and the guy is, as I say, seemingly taking the Ultiverse in a 'new direction' and it's worrying because he's so ****ing dreadful.

Don't pick up the next issue if you don't like it. That's a waste of money. Comics you bought and enjoyed are never a waste of money. You paid for them, you enjoyed them, and you can re-read them and enjoy them again. Buying comics you know you don't like just to 'complete the run' (I know this pain) is the true waste of money - and your time.

Honestly - instead of ULTIMATES 3 #3, pick up another comic. If you like the medium of comics as much as you do, try other comics. I'm sure you'll like them.

Some suggestions: THE SPIRIT, FELL, ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, and HELLBOY. All fun reads. If you want any other suggestions or an expansion on these, you can either check the threads for them, or ask me or another poster who reads 'em. Plenty of good comics out there. Spend your money on the ones you enjoy, not the ones you used to.

It's good to have you posting, Pearl! :D

Yeah... you're right. I might download the rest of Ultimates 3, but Jeph has enough of my money. It's good to hear the universe itself probably won't die, too... I really committed to it.

As for the suggestions, I already have the Spirit and Hellboy, and those are good enough that your taste is probably sound enough for me to follow up on the other two (well, that and your avatar). Was the Serenity tie-in any good?

(And thanks for the welcome)

Well i've actually been lurking here for a while thanks to DIrishB's timeline. I just only decided posting could be fun recently. Thanks for the welcome.

Ha-HA! I've roped in another one.

The Serenity mini was pretty good in my opinion. Not the same as seeing it on screen, but fit perfectly with the tone of the show/movie, and worked as a nice bridge between the two. It also kind of resurrected and then put to rest a few loose ends from the series. I enjoyed it.

There's a second 3 issue Serenity mini series shipping in a few months called "Better Days", which I believe takes place around or before the first mini, "Those Left Behind".

Both were plotted by Joss Whedon (always a good thing having the original brain behind the property guiding it), written by Brett Matthews (who also worked on the show and has an intimate knowledge of it), and awesome artwork from Will Conrad (I think that was his name).

All in all, its a good read, don't have any complaints other than I want more.

Sorry to go off topic, I just love me some Firefly/Serenity discussion.

I also would recommend Y - The Last Man...its honestly the best title for people who are either new to comics or who don't read them at all. It got my girlfriend and a few dozen of my friends to look at the comics industry in a whole new light, as well as being an incredibly fun read in itself.

Not to take a detour here, but you sound like me in that you don't want to jump off of the train that you had invested in.

I wonder also if your other comic tastes are similar. I'd like to suggest 'Immortal Iron Fist'. Its not far into the run (issue 12), so getting back issues still isn't too tough, and it is honestly the best new comic I've read since getting into 'Ultimates' 5 or so years ago.

That does sound pretty good... Do we learn anything about Book at all? It would open up old wounds to realize I'll never know his story... Y:The Last Man I've been meaning to pick up for a little while after I bought the first trade. Vaughn certainly has a talent for comics.

I can check that one out, too.... thanks. :)

 Jemaine and Bret have changed my entire philosophy on life. It's a lot more musical now.

But maybe I should stop derailing now...

It's okay. My avatar is from one of the BETTER DAYS issues that DiB mentioned. It's by Adam Hughes, who's a terrific artist and is doing the covers (not the interiors) for all three issues.

As for Book - I kinda hope we never find out. Much like why Mal hates the Alliance - I kinda like not knowing. It makes it more personal; I decided why. For example; Book - I reckon he's a master thief on the run. Remember the papers he uses to get medical attention? Well, Mal tries to get the attention with forged papers and fails. I reckon Book just had better forgeries. :D

As for my reading suggestions - I only mentioned ongoing titles you could pick up the next issue of and not be disappointed in any way. If we go outside that scope, there's ASTONISHING X-MEN (which finishes soon), PLANETARY (which finished a while back), FABLES, Y: THE LAST MAN (as has been mentioned), THE PUNISHER: MAX (Ennis is off the title soon, who knows if it'll be any good), 100 BULLETS, and (when it comes out - hopefully in about 18 months) ALL-STAR WONDER WOMAN.

I'm glad you like THE SPIRIT. Because it is super fantastic. :D

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 discussion [spoilers]

I like Darwyn Cooke in general, really. Absolute DC, even having never read an issue of a DC book before was really, really, good; especially read all at once. I've researched a little about 100 Bullets, and the concept alone is incredibly original. And if Garth Ennis wrote even close to the same caliber as the origin of the Darkness it's probably worth picking up.

Now I just need one title to start with...
