Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

Well it's not like he's going to stay unmaked forever. You'll get it back.

When I first saw the unmasking in civil war 2 my imediate thought was "I can't wait to see how they retcon this"

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

True. Retcons for everyone!

Yeah. This is something that you know wouldn't last, but would like to see where it goes until it is. But I'm fine when it gets retconned. This is something that shouldn't really last forever.

I think I'll enjoy it much when it does revert back.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

I remember back when Ezekiel and Morlun first showed up, Zeke and Peter fought Morlun together and Peter thought something along the lines of, "This is the first time I've ever fought alongside someone with the same powers as me."

Ben Reilly would be rolling in his grave if he weren't a disintegrated pile of dust scattered in New York by the wind. I hate comic book death, so I don't think he should be brought back, but it'd be nice if his existence were acknowledged or if Kaine's disappearance were explained.

And yeah, it's pretty weak that Pete's attitude and personality take a complete 180 between comics. I guess if it's good enough for Wolverine, he can put up with it.

I love ben reilly, but I'm not surprised JMS doesn't know about him. He doesn't know about Peter and MJ's dauhter either. It just sucks the editors don't care.

I remember a quote that pissed me off five or six years ago when an editor was talking about X-Men Unlimited. He said he had asked a writer for a Sabretooth story and the writer said he didn't know anything about the character. The editor's response was "Neither do I! Just write a good story!"

Terrible. If you don't know anything about a character you're editing, freaking read every comic about them! How hard is that? If it's a story about a character and it gets everything wrong then it's NOT A GOOD STORY no matter what! Idiots.

And that's why Bill Jemas sucked. He encouraged that crap.

About the webbing:

Q: Themanofbat 03-24-2007 05:15 PM

Inasmuch as I've enjoyed JMS' run on Amazing Spider-Man, I've really got to wonder who edits his books, because a few doozies really got by the last issue (ASM #539).

First of all, why does Peter refer to Aunt May's maiden name as Fitzgerald when it's been pretty much established as being Reilly?

Secondly, how does Marvel explain the webbing that holds up his black costume at the end of the issue? His old chemically made webbing dissolved within an hour or two, and though we've yet to hear how long his new organic webbing lasts, it can't be forever. Because if it does, then Peter kills the cop in ASM #539 by suffocating him with his webbing (on account that it would have covered his face for faaaaaaaaaaaar too long)?

JQ: Hey, Themanofbat, thanks for the question. As to the first part, Axel, who edits the book, wanted to explain.

Axel Alonso: That was an error. Just slipped through the cracks. JMS emailed us to fact-check Aunt May's maiden name, and in a glitch, we gave him the wrong name. It was one of those "D'oh!" moments that just got past everyone here. We've fixed it for the second print and the trade.

JQ: There you go, Themanofbat, you get yourself a NoPrize! Expect that not to be in the mail.

As for the second half, JMS himself has you answer.

JMS: Going in reverse order...whether or not the webbing lasted over an hour or not is not relevant to the cop, who would have suffocated within minutes if it had covered his nose and mouth, but it did not. The only purpose was to immobilize him.

Second, it's been established that Peter had to modify his original web fluid so that it dissolved within an hour to insure that nobody got trapped there for an undetermined amount of time and potentially died. Since we did not see the scene in which he puts the costume up there, I would submit to you that he used the unmodified, longer lasting webbing. Since each new batch has to be changed in order to make it last an hour, having the basic materials to put it there would not have been difficult.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

There was definitely a scene in an old comic where Peter tried to make money by selling his web fluid, but couldn't because it wasn't permanent. Does it predate that explanation?

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

I seem to remember an early Stan Lee issue where Spidey tried to sell his webing formula to make some money and it was refuse best what possible uses are there for an adhesive that lasts only an hour. So really his unmodify webbing only lasts an hour but you could argue hi modified it to last longer by allowing it to harden.

Oh my god... I'm a geek!

EDIT: ... Damn you TwighlightEl *shakes fists*

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

I read the latest one today...looks like spiderman went a bit dark..and now with punisher picking up cap's mask...looks like black is white and up is down.

I also thought he should've put aunt may on his back, like he did with the baby in the Other where he was meant to evolve new abilities. She looked pretty cumbersome to have under the arm.

I think I missed the whole webbing thing, when did he modify his webbing?

It was a spectacularly crappy story which tied into Avengers Disassembled.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

And if you want to read it (I'd advise against it myself), it's Spectacular Spider-Man #17-20, written by Paul Jenkins.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

Doesn't sound like it's a good read..but hold on now he shoots web from his wrists like in the movie? what about his spikes? or does the webbing come out of the spikes?

They kind of avoided it, since the issue also had "insect telepathy". Not connected to "The Other" anyway.

From JMS's answer, this has been retconned.

JMS said:

Not organic, it would seem.

And for the retcons, the Men in Black should neuralize everyone. Marvel does own the rights (unless that has gone to the film company, I don't know how that bollocks works).

They said on New Joe Fridays that the initials for the next team on ASM is SW.

So does that mean it's going to be Slott and Wieringo? 'Cuz if so, that would rock.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

They should have gotten Romita Jr. to do "One More Day" with JMS, because I'll be damned if the Romita Jr./JMS Amazing Spider-Man wasn't the best 616 Spider-Man comic in almost a decade.

I've just read from the beginning of JMS' run to issue fifty (491 in the current numbering)... I can't find my copy of the 9/11 issue, though, which is upsetting, because that issue is DAMN hard to find... But aside from that one issue, and two other's i'll be picking up on wednesday, I have the entire JMS run up to date. That's 67 issues...

I'm looking forward to finish reading through the series, except for The Other... God, why did that even have to exist?

Question for the crowd: If I were to pick up another 616 Spidey book that isn't this or "Spider-Man <3 Mary Jane", what should I get?

Well, it's hard to say with all the creative teams being changed after the next couple months.

I really like Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Sensational, though. And Peter David's usually pretty good, although I haven't been overly impressed with his Friendly Neighborhood.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

I have decided that the only way the Thrice shipping Spider-Man would be worth getting is if it was a 52 style writing crew made up of Greg Rucka, Ed Brubaker, and Matt Fraction (For the crazy). For artists get John Romita Jr and Ron Garney, with the various hot artists that Marvel wants to push doing one out of every four issues.

What happen to "the Amazing Spider-Man" in October? I didn't see a cover for it on Marvel.com. Did any see or know anything about the October issue?

It'll be back in November when it will finish with the last part of "One More Day". To try and ensure that it doesn't create any delays, the last part was moved to November since the first two issues of OMD are coming out in September. Joe Q. is finishing up the second part (where as he mentioned in NJF last week he did 9 pages during his week vacation). So by the time part 1 of the story comes out, he'll be about done if not done with the last part.

And after all this it starts shipping three times a month and FNSM and SSM get cancelled.
