Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

I couldn't sleep last night and for some reason I was thinking of OMD.

If Spider-Man never got married in the first place, wouldn't it make OMD itself impossible? The entire story hinges on Spider-Man's marriage. If it erased that, then the events of OMD could never have happened in the first place. So if OMD erased itself, wouldn't it just go back to Peter and MJ being married again?

It's magic, it doesn't have to make sense.

Excellent point.

And I wonder if anyone along the line will be intelligent enough to pick up on that when, inevitably, this is all retconned...

It's magic, it doesn't have to make sense.

...but, sadly, I know they won't.

Oh, Christ. BACK TO THE FUTURE has a huge plot hole that prevents any of it working: if Einstein and Jennifer can be left in evil 1985 because as soon as Marty and Doc change 1955 evil 1985 will become good 1985, then how come normal 2015 doesn't become evil 2015 when Biff changes 1955?

Doesn't matter.

The way I see it - OMD is like Dawn in BUFFY. Dawn shows up, everyone remembers Dawn being in the show, but she wasn't really there. Spidey was married, but now, no one remembers that. That's how it works (conceptually).

The only problem with that is Harry coming back - which was a frivolous decision and unnecessary. They're doing this wonderful thing of shelving all the Spidey villains for a year to make new ones; Spidey's got two new supporting characters (Carlie and Harry's girl) - why not give him a new best friend that he had precisely because he didn't get married?

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

But Dawn makes sense, because she was created at that point and the memories were retroactively applied as a story point on the show. She literally didn't exist prior to that point.

Which is where the Buffy comics messed up, by showing Dawn in flashbacks. Yes, the characters had memories of her back then, but she didn't actually exist at that point.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

so i picked up Amazing Spider-Man #547 & #548 (X-Men: First Class #8 aswell) from a convinience store since i've been comic deprived since the second week of January since i've been in kelowna and they have been tempting me (man i'll have alot of catching up to do when i go back to Calgary)

they weren't bad, they weren't great, it's alot like a caramel-apple with a rotten apple inside (yes that's happened to me), I certainly read worse books. so they convinced me to start picking up ASM again, looks like some decent fun with some great creators

I'm still going to gripe about OMD (bad move), but it's nice to have some decent Spidey stories (USM hasn't been doing it for me since Knights, not sure why)

this also convinced me to pick up The Order again somehow to see it to the end.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

I'm with you on that, Gemini. These are really fun, decent stories. I liked the Blue Shield intro arrow in #550.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

I liked the health insurance line about Blue Shield in the issue.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

The villains they have may not be top notch or whatever, but I have to say I am still really enjoying this new "life" to the series. I actually laughed out loud at one of Spidey's joke.

Now, that's not to say all of JMS' issues (that I read) were bad. There was a lot of great issues done.

Let's see how Gale does now. It should be fun.

Here's something Alex Alonso said on OMD in an interview in Wizard:

"From a sales perspective and interest perspective, this is fantastic. This is what we wanted."

But wait! It's not over, it gets better!!

"At the end of the day, the internet is not a good gauge of fandom. To look to it as an indicator of what fans' tastes are is to travel a dangerous path."

Whoa. W. T. F?! I'm sorry, but I find that offensive. First of all, 'the internet is not a good gauge of fandom?' Um....HELLOOO!! Just because they're on the internet doesn't mean these fans aren't any different from fans who don't go online! What's so different about people sharing their opinions on the internet and sharing them in person? I mean, besides actually hearing the tones and what-have-you.

Then to say 'To look to it as an indicator of what fans' tastes are is to travel a dangerous path.' What the hell is that supposed to mean? What is so different about seeing what fans like and don't like on the internet, and reading it in a letter? Or hearing it in person? The tastes won't change!! The only way it will be a dangerous path is if you react to the hate. But guess what? NO ONE WILL LIKE EVERYTHING! It will always be like that! You're always going to get praise and hatred, no matter where!!

This makes me lose any respect I would have for this guy. Talk about talking out of your ***.

He has a point.

For example, there could be... TWELVE people in this thread talking about Spidey. TWELVE different people and it could go on and on.

Twelve, to a single site, looks like a lot, but it is, in fact, a tiny amount. The vast majority of fans are silent, and not posting in forums.

He has a point.

This was never about him having a point. Whether or not he has a point- the way he said it was very rude.

And even if the fans who do like it are silent- that changes absolutely nothing. People are still going to hate it and others are going to like it. You don't have to go to a website to know that. The levels of hatred always levels from a hell of a lot to not so much.

Again- not about having a point.

Fair enough.

But I don't think he was that rude. :?

Must we fight, fellow Iron Fist hater?
