Valiant Relaunch

Yup, meant to post that. I'm expecting a big announcement at SDCC. There is also a Shadowman film in the works with a script by J. Michael Straczynski and a Bloodshot film being developed. It'd be cool to see a smaller published like Valiant start their own interconnected film universe. I don't think it'll have anywhere near the same financial success as the Marvel Cinematic Universe or WB's DC Cinematic Universe, but I do think the Valiant library is stocked with interesting characters and books in a number of different genres that could translate really well to screen. I also think it's really smart to kick things off with an Archer & Armstrong movie, as it offers a great blend of action and adventure, humor, conspiracy theory, and buddy/bromance elements.

Pretty sure all the planned movies are heavily influenced by the rebooted Valiant universe comics.

I saw this also. I think this will be great. Especially if the movies are of the same quality as the books, which I expect they would be.

Yup. The films are all heavily influenced by or even directly based on the current runs of the new Valiant books (right down to A&A reportedly facing off against the 1%ers), so that seems to be the case.

I'm not sure if all the films will be released by the same studio, allowing Valiant to create their own interconnected film universe (which would be an interesting alternative to the Marvel and DC film universes), or if they'll be at separate studios thus making such crossovers impossible. I'm hoping for the former.

But it's exciting news. Really looking forward to it. I expect Valiant will release further news of the films at SDCC.

Also, the Lemire/Kindt project at Valiant will be a team up 4-issue miniseries with Eternal Warrior, Bloodshot, and Geomancer (Kay Henry) called "The Valiant". Between two stellar writers and Paolo Rivera's amazing artwork, this sounds like a book even non fans should check out. First issue comes out in December.

I don't see Valiant relinquishing control of their characters and not being able to do crossovers etc. They seem too smart for that.

I'm a trade waiter so it will be a while before I get The Valiant. But I'll check it out eventually.

I agree, especially since they had their eyes set on turning their comics into films from the get go of the new Valiant universe. The only problem is film studios are notoriously finicky and their executives have a habit of forcing changes (which they think will make the films more appealing to general audiences but usually end up making them reviled by both general audiences and fans of the material the films are based on equally). And Valiant doesn't have the character recognition or financial power to create their own studio like Marvel did, or be wholly owned by a large studio like WB as is the case with DC.

Still, I think the Archer & Armstrong as the first film is smart. It'll likely appeal to general audiences with it's Indiana Jones vibe, action adventure element, humor, bromance, and martial arts (in Archer's case). The conspiracy angle can make for a really interesting film on it's own, but combined with all those other elements it's chalk full of awesome.

And hopefully it'll be marketed right and be a financial success, allowing Valiant to release more films based on other characters in their catalogue by the same studio, and hopefully allowing a greater degree of creative control.

The good news is you'll only have to wait a month or two after the arc ends. Love Valiant's approach to releasing trades very soon after the arc's end.

I'm starting to think so.

I also started X-O Manofwarfare2. It's weird.

Really...weird.

X-O Manowar almost lost me but then it did a time jump without actually doing a time jump and the dude at the end of the first arc has my attention so hard. I'm in!

I don't know who he is but he's living phat, got a ton of honeys, and talks to aliens.

Clay Mann Goes VALIANT Exclusive With October's X-O MANOWAR #0

"Mann joins Jeff Lemire, Paolo Rivera, and Rafa Sandoval as 2014-debuting creators at Valiant Comics. Doug Braithwaite, Cafu, Joshua Dysart, Clayton henry, Trevor Hairsine, and Cary Nord are also exclusive to the publisher, which just entered its third year since their reboot/revival."

Quite the stable of even more top notch talent Valiant is putting together.

Cool. Was wondering when they were going to do a zero issue for XO. And we get a Unity #0 in October as well. Very nice! Overall the zero issues for the various series have been spectacular.

And yes, Valiant's stable of talent is quite impressive.

Does X-O Manowar ever go back to the past or space? I'm on issue #6 and it's starting to lose me again. It needs a good punch in the arm of heavy sci-fi instead of flirting with it like it has been.

EDIT: Never-mind, #7 starts in the past. I'm back to being interested.

Yeah, there are various flashbacks to the fifth century AD in XO, and yes, he does return to space in the Planet Death arc, which starts in #9 or #10 I believe. He also wreaks bloody vengeance on the Vine aliens in that arc.

I was more hoping for a return to the past. Never got it. It did get more sci-fi though so...yay? (see below). Planet Death starts in issue #11. Issues nine and ten makes up the prelude.

Aric needs to die. He went to their planet with intent to commit genocide so when the final issue was supposed to have a "heroes rush into battle" thrill it just fell completely flat. Both sides had the exact same goal of just killing everyone. He's no hero. Not by a long shot. Then it tries to have a happy ending but it feels more like that ending of The Golden Lagoon from The Transformers. This story would work well if it was giving an origin for a bad guy or the next arc is him going "man, I've done some pretty messed up stuff. I should fix myself" but nope, he's gotta fight the Eternal Warrior! The worst part is that this comic has really good ideas. I'm going to keep reading to uphold our deal, but this book makes me sad.

That would kill the man out of time aspect that's intrinsic to the character.

I know, but the prelude is still a part of the Planet Death arc.

Aric needs to die.

Um... ok. Well he may, given the revelations made about the X-O armor in the current Armor Hunters crossover.

He went to the Vine planet to seek vengeance for them essentially wiping out almost his entire Dacian tribe and holding them prisoner for years, forcing them to do slave labor and committed countless atrocities against his own people and an unknown amount of others throughout the millennia. He didn't view himself as a hero, just a warrior. Nor does the book make him out to be a hero, but it does paint him as a warrior.

And yes, he realized during the Planet Death arc the entire race of Vine shouldn't be held accountable for the sins and policies of their leaders. He evolved. Again, you have this thing where you dislike believable, human characters and their growth as characters, instead seeming to prefer one dimensional archetypes who don't mature, evolve, or grow at all. Utilizing such a one dimensional approach is the definition of bad writing.

It'd be a reverse man out of time. There's a ton of story potential to be had there.

I like "believable, human characters and their growth as characters", I don't like characters I can't relate to.

Not without him spending time in the present to become acclimated to the world around him.

So you could relate to the characterizations of the Ultimates in Ultimates 3...? Ugh.

Which they aren't letting him. It's just one battle after the next. It's exhausting to read. It's why it's taking me so long. The book needs some downtime to actually flesh out the characters and humanize them in a nonviolent way.

They felt really human and emotional to me (especially Hawkeye) so yes. They were still cynical, but not to the extent of Millar. Also it was really funny and humor is the quickest way to getting me to relate to characters.

You'll see exactly that once they return from the Vine planet and settle in Romania and later Nebraska. Also, there was a fair amount of that in the early issues when Aric was a slave aboard the Vine ship.

Also, you do remember you recommended the Transformers series to me? That's essentially one battle after the next. You do have a strange approach to seeing things only one way.

Emotional? Relatable? Not for most people, hence it being hated by the majority. Now that isn't to say the majority is always right, but in this case it's a perfect example of that.

And funny? Maybe to a pre-pubescent boy who laughs at fart and dick jokes, but I assure you, I found no worthwhile humor in it. It was childish, pedantic, and idiotic. The little bit of humor in Ultimates 1 and 2 was far smarter, effective, and better done overall.
