Ultimates 3 #1-5 discussion [Loeb/Madureira] [spoilers]

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

So the thing that aggravated me the most was Thor's death.

Oh yes. Thor dies in this issue.

The whole, "Verily, I speaketh like a dick because 'tis my true nature" pissed me off.

They need to decide, properly, if the Ultimate Universe is a separate universe or a ****ing prequel. If it's a prequel, Thor talking like a **** is fine. It's stupid, but it's fine. If it's an separate universe, drastically changing a character's speech pattern for no storytelling reason other than to harken to the 616 version is a waste of an original take on a character.

In that sense, Ultimate Thor has died and we've got this ****ing stupid punk *** olde-speake guy in his place.

THE ULTIMATES was one of the best ultimizations they ever did. Forget the quality of the art or story, I'm talking about sheer reimagining.

They took the idea of the Avengers - several dysfunctional heroes who band together to fight the uber-bad, who reside in a mansion together in unwieldy numbers and turned it into a military superhero unit with such incredible power that they could only fight villains who were planning to end life as we know it (invasion, destruction, conquest - didn't matter which). More than that, each member, got reimagined as much as appropriate. Captain America loses the frivolous serendipity of his costume in favour of something more militaristic, and is given command of a military unit. Transforming the team into a branch of the military also increased Captain America's unique appeal as the super soldier. Removing that element turns him into a guy who likes to play army. Iron Man's suit and financial workings change, but the rest stays the same. Thor - a bizarre creation is remodeled to fit the efficient and practical theme of the Ultimates team dynamic, what's more, Thor was used, brilliantly, to connect the team to otherworldly forces. The Ultimates versus a monster of science? No problem. The title is set in the contemporary world. The Ultimates versus aliens or time-travelling gods? Thor is that little nod that maybe such things exist. And that question - maybe, maybe not - heightened the ominous tension those beings created. It made things secret. It made things intriguing.

I dunno. This feels to me like pornography. Everything's just out in the open for all to see, and there's no real point to any of it.

Ultimate Thor is the biggest casualty. Hawkeye, Captain America - you can retcon those guys back. But Thor... they changed his entire identity. Gone is the David Icke, "You're ****ing crazy - but really powerful" fun, gone is the subtle hint of insanity, gone is the WONDER. Do you remember, in "Thunder" (v1 #4) when Thor said to Banner, "These powers are neither mutant nor machine..." - do you remember that question pop up in your head - "Then what is he?" That terrifying element that he may or may not be telling the truth?

The pay off to all that mystery? He's a reject from WETA digital with a deus ex machina army. And now, talks like an idiot who pretends he was born in the 14th century.

Rest in peace Ultimate Thor. You sir, were one of the finest superheroes created in this generation. After 19 issues, they went and ****ed you up.

I am so ****ing mad right now, I cannot continue this post

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

I didn't think it was as bad as the first

The art was more 'sequential' and easier to follow.
Taken on its own, it might not be that bad. Following a modern classic (Yes, I really think that) it is somewhat of an abomination. It really is just too soon to be too different from barely established norms in Millar's Ultimates.

Maybe what I meant was

I didn't think it was as bad as the first

In the way that chopping off your own head the second time would not, in theory, be as bad as the first time.

You think this A stands for Alhpa fight.

Awesome.

thanks. =D

But seriously, they've killed:

ultimate wanda
Ultimate thor (Bass sums this up nicely)
Ultimate iron man (he overestimated the healing power of a blonde and is now a whiny emo ***** in the 616 iron man suit, )
Ultimate hawkeye (My family is DEEEEAAAADD)

Anyone else get the feeling Hawkeye's conversation with spidey was just Loeb crying out over the death of his son?

My sentiments exactly.

As ****ty as the story was, though- that art was phenomenal. Sabretooth looks really, really good- and not nearly as beast-like as he does on the covers.
But as a follow-up to Hitch? Not at all what was required. Ah well.

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

its a damn good thing none of this Loebaverse stuff is going to crossover with the Ultimate Universe anytime soon huh guys. This stuff would be terrible if it were written in continuity with the Ultimates, ha ha ha ha haHA HA HA HA. Phew... I am so glad it isn't.

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

Not only did this suck major donkey balls, but have you noticed that beginning this Wednesday, it seems Marvel has started to use even flimsier paper for the covers of the comics?

I miss the days of Ultimate Universe cardstock covers (USM #1-31). Of course now they would all be $3.99.

Wasp asks a unconscious hank what pills he took so they can help him. HE'S UNCOUSCIOUS, YOU TARD!!! HE CAN'T AWNSER!!! JUST PUMP HIS STOMACH, ITS NOT ROCKETSCIENCE!!!!

That is my new signature.

You sir, are the finest most original lambaster of Ultimates 2 EVAR.

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

Figuratively. He's dead figuratively, the same way Hawkeye, Cap, etc. Are in the process of being killed.

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

oooohhhh

i guess its not that bad, but i guess its like comparing a catheter to a circumcision, ones less disgusting but either way your junk herts

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

The whole issue was a giant flashback.

The 2 seconds ago meant that the ending is happening two seconds before the next one begins, meaning the next issue is in the present.

Hence the explanation of the 2 seconds ago.

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

I know, theoretically it should have ended with the present.

But this is Loeb we are talking about here.

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

If the events of the story are linear, beginning after the first issue and ending prior to the next issue, why would it be presented as a flashback?

Re: Ultimates 3 #2 preview and interviews (spoilers i guess)

Hawkeye shoots spidey for no reason, gets hit by cap for no reason, who then tells him to pull out (for no reason). The two of them head back to the mansion and leave spidey paralysed in the middle of a park. Seriously, the whole scene was pointless and mean. Poor Peter.

Yes. Why did Captain America... who I think LIKES Spidey - leave him, paralysed and unconscious on the floor... IN THE SNOW... for 20 minutes?

Will he feel guilt if the newspaper tomorrow reads, "SPIDER-MAN FOUND DEAD. MUGGED TO DEATH. HE WAS A KID CALLED PETER PARKER. WHICHEVER JACKASS LEFT HIM TO GET KILLED IS A JACKASS."

Wasp asks a unconscious hank what pills he took so they can help him. HE'S UNCOUSCIOUS, YOU TARD!!! HE CAN'T AWNSER!!! JUST PUMP HIS STOMACH, ITS NOT ROCKETSCIENCE!!!!

It certainly isn't rocketscience. It's biochemistry. Something Wasp has a PHD in.

So of course, she can't do it because it's science. And only Asian chicks are good at science.

They try to explain why thor went back to his 616 way of speaking by saying he feels more relaxed around midgardians now. My hatred for Thor now burns with the power of a billion exploding suns. :furious: :furious: :furious:

Apparently - now he's 'proven' to be a God, it has had no ramifications on his public image at all. Before hand, he was a crusader, beloved by the left, maligned by the right, and an extremely influential man in political politics. Because he was superpowered, had a hammer, claimed to be a God, and no one knew why.

Now that he, through the use of WETA's CGI department, is 'proven' to be a God, no one seems to care. At all. So he can stop trying to save the world from itself and instead just bang a 19-year old girl day and night. No need to wake up the masses, no. Hedonism RULES, people! That's what Ultimate Thor is all about.

There are a million and one things in there that sucked ***, but they all pail in comparison to the horrible fail that is the last page. It ends with a single shot of wolverine arriving. Above his head is a little box that reads: 2 seconds ago. Thats right, the end happens two seconds before itself. It doesnt make any sense. Its so dumb you cant help but smile at it.

I swear to God I missed that. That's ****ing brilliant, sir.

edit: Crap, i just noticed that they brought back the 616 Iron Man armor.
Also, the cover art is sabretooth fighting Puck. "you think this A stands for Alpha Flight?" :D

I can only hope the "A" stands for "Axed".

I totally agree. #2 is BETTER than #1. But not by much, and it is still awful.

If the events of the story are linear, beginning after the first issue and ending prior to the next issue, why would it be presented as a flashback?

UNPARALLELED LOGICAL TRUTH-TELLING DESTRUCTION TECHNIQUE!

Just started reading Ultimates 2, and after trudging through the first issue and the first two pages of this issue, I just have to say...

Now I remember why Battle Chasers was so unreadable.

More to follow.

Just wait until the internal monologues start.

[Iron Man: Maybe we should help Spider-Man out but, boy, do I want a drink right now]
[Hawkeye: Spider-Man thinks he's got it bad? Don't you understand???? I lost my family...]
[Captain America: Jiminy Cricket! Is that a metal carriage somehow propelled by itself? I'm scared of this Brave New World!]
[Spider-Man: Oy vey!]

I liked Ultimates 2, and not sure what Mad had to do with it. If instead you're referring to Ultimates 3, I can understand.
