Ultimate Origins series discussion [Bendis/Guice] [spoilers]

Re: Ultimate Origins discussion (spoilers)

I won't lie. I did like this issue. I'm still cautious about the rest of this mini but as a standalone issue, this one wasn't half bad.

Captain America: Mythos was better... but this was just fine.

Re: Ultimate Origins discussion (spoilers)

I can ignore the continuity errors and enjoy this. They are making attempts to bring back the Ultimate Universe, you can tell that. But I'm skeptical, at the pace this is going, if it'll do the trick or if it'll just be a "the Watcher is watching you... And then ULTIMATUM!" ending. Jeph Loeb is building this Ultimatum up where it could ruin the UU.

Re: Ultimate Origins discussion (spoilers)

Just read #2...seems like this could have been cut out of the series. For being planned as long as this has it sure doesn't progress much.

I agree with whomever pointed out the uselessness in retelling Cap's origin. If you want to make a series on it and give it the Ultimate spin, and draw parallels to the evolving of the UU, OK. But to spend an issue of a miniseries of which Cap is just a small part...just a waste. Millar handled Cap's origin perfectly in Ultimates...the train scene comes to mind. That scene fit in with the "current" story and gave a cool glimpse into Cap's WW2 life.

But the origin story in Ultimate Origins was a dime a dozen rehash I've read (seemingly) a million times.

Yep. Once again, its become apparent that in terms of the Ultimate verse, Bendis should stick with a teenaged Spidey.

So far, Ultimate Origins' biggest revelation is that Ultimate Watcher looks like an ancient Japanese stone lantern. And thats something I personally could give two ****s about.

Re: Ultimate Origins discussion (spoilers)

That and Wolverine invented mutants.

And Fury is a thousand years old.

[This post exaggerated for comic appeal.]

You know the scene where the F4 are called in to examine the Watcher tower thing reminds me of the Ventures Bros episode where they go into space.

"So why am I up here"

"The red light started glowing"

"So?"

"Its... never done that before"

Re: Ultimate Origins discussion (spoilers)

does watcher remind anyone else of Arnim Zola?

:lol::lol::lol: Good God, you're right!

Maybe the Watcher will just yell "IGNORE ME!!!!"

Re: Ultimate Origins discussion (spoilers)

My LCS gave me an advanced copy of issue 3. I will throw up a spoiler tag for people:

The Fantastic Four continues to sit around with their thumbs in their asses, saying "We don't know what this is" while Carol Danvers says stuff "Well, I want to know what it is!" for about three pages. Now watchers show up at each place we might find interesting (Stark's mansion here the ultimates are (Still in a Ultimates 2 Iron Man suit by the by), the Triskellion, Xavier's school, and Peter Parker's attic (really?). It shows up in a couple of other places too, the Daily Bugle, London, Hell's Kitchen, and the Baxter building.
We flash back to Weapon X where Wolverine is being released by an unkown person. He gives a speech about freedom and the people in charge of Weapon X come pouring over the stairs. The woman in charge calls the man Erik (Magneto) and reveals that he is her son and she wants to find a cure for him and his kind. He kills her and all the soldiers with the metal in the room.
Flash forward a little to the first meeting of Magneto and Xavier. Xavier is teaching a class and Magneto steps in to talk to him telepathically. Apparently Xavier has an in ability to read Magneto's mind unless he is thinking at Xavier. Also, apparently Magneto can see when other mutants are using their gifts.
We then flash to the Savage Land where Magneto has put together a world based on Xavier's dream, but Xavier isn't sold on it actually working. HE says there are too many steps in between. They have a lengthly discussion where Magneto attempts to convince him, then, watchmen style, creates an enormous metal structure out of a few small blocks of metal. Nearby a metal totem pole watches. Yawn

I am a little disappointed in this series because we were promised something that had been all thought out before Ultimatum was coming, and now this has been turned into a plug for Ultimatum. We get watchers every two pages crammed down our throats and I have to wonder what the "Ultimate Origins" we never got was going to be. Oh Well.

That doesn't sound horrible. I don't see any needless connections.

Oh, and Hell's Kitchen? Now you want to make DD of some importance? He couldn't even show up in Ultimates 2

Re: Ultimate Origins discussion (spoilers)

So I just read #2. Has it been confirmed whether or not the characters are their fathers or the real thing? Because it seems Bendis's idea of "tying things together" involves him making sure every character knew each other in WWII.

I'm so desperate for some new and good UU material.

Wouldn't be more realistic if all this stuff wasn't connected and it was just bunch of random stuff that happened. This makes the 616 universe look more realistic.

Re: Ultimate Origins discussion (spoilers)

I don't see any connections. :?

I don't see anything, honestly. nothing of worth, at least.

Are we now judging stories, not based on their intrinsic value, but instead simply on whether or not they **** with continuity?

Because that's a sad state of affairs, yeah?

Re: Ultimate Origins discussion (spoilers)

See that's my problem. When this was solicited the first time it seemed like it was going to be a really neat series that sort of tied everything together. I want to know how much was cut so that we could see the watcher ever ten minutes and stroke Jeph Loeb's ego by slapping "ULTIMATUM!!!1!ZOMG" at the top.
