Ultimate Origins series discussion [Bendis/Guice] [spoilers]

well, it think that's kind of the thing about Bendis. he has no respect for established continutiy. He isn't afraid to kill or disrespect important characters (c.f. avengers dissassembeled and his run on UXM) Or change the overall feeling of an established team/title (c.f. New Avengers) or ignore his own time references (c.f. USM) or just mess up continuity all together (compare any appearances or mentions of the FF in UMTU, and USM before the superstars arc to the Ultimate Fantastic Four as they are now...keeping in mind that he and Millar co-wrote the first few arcs of UFF). Unless it's his baby (like Secret Invasion or USM) he doesn't respect the past much. I really like a lot of his work, i never cared about the Avengers before Dissassembled, but now i love the New Avengers, and USM is my favourite book hands down. But his disregard for continuity is pretty annoying. So, yes DIrishB, i think he is ignoring continuity on purpose. He isn't maliciously screwing it up on purpose, but he doesn't care if he does screw it up.

IMO Bendis still isn't a good writer, competent sure, but good not really, he's been leaning on that "Who do you trust? Can I trust you? WE CAN'T TRUST ANYONE!" thing for far too long

His dialouge is pretty good for the most part. Though I get what you say about ideas/execution, the poor execution make his ideas seem much worse.

By the way, I said he was a good writer, I didn't say I liked his work (I just want to clarilfy).

His work is fine, he's improved vastly in the last year or so, his dialougue is okay it definitley works for how a real person might react to a situation, but all the yiddish and redundant "you're sure" "yes i'm sure" "are you sure you're sure?" "I might be sure" "well are you sure or aren't you?" "okay I'm sure" stuff can get real irritating

Looking at what I know of Bendis off hand: USM 1-13 and USM 90-125, I would have to agree, but currently I think he is a good writer.

And I see your point, Gemini, the Spidey/Shadowcat "teen talking" thing can get old. Do it once, it shows realism; do it every issue, it shows that you are out of ideas and really patronize teens.
 
He also isn't very good at characterization. Everyone talks like Bendis.
 
Bendis - some people like him, some don't. And that's okay.

Personally, I think he has the potential to be good, but like Millar, lacks the craft to be consistently effective. This is why his comics and stories have genuinely brilliant moments mired in loose, undesirable pap.

At least he's not Loeb.

Bass, I find your lack of faith in Mark Millar disturbing.

Millar > Bendis > Loeb

Don't put an equal sign anywhere in that equation, ever.

Hey, look at that...Bendis nodded to some previous continuity there...nice.

I actually liked those first several pages...Maybe this issue will be an improvement over the previous three. At the very least we got a sensible explanation (or as close to it as possible) for Fury being around since WWII and it never being mentioned before. I also liked his explanation as to why he's doing what he's doing.
 
Meh. I hate hate hate hate hate the idea of Fury as a super soldier. Hate it.
