The DVD purchase thread

I just purchased the Coraline Bluray that comes with a DVD and Digital Copy of the film also.

It also has both 2D and 3D versions complete with 4 sets of glasses.

It was all the price of a normal Bluray. Sweetness.

I watched the 3D last night. I am sure it is my first time watching a 3D movie. I never have because it seems like it would be cheap looking.

I must say HD in 3D was amazing. I heard nothing but good things about Coraline's 3D effects and some scenes were so graphically beautiful.

I asked TOG but - is Coraline kid-friendly? I thought it was but then realized I know nothing about it. TOG told me it's about the same as Nightmare Before Christmas, which is one of my son's favorite movies - if that's true then we're good.

I didn't see it myself but, I have some friends that did. They said, that there was some questionable scenes. But most of it was over the kids heads.

Nightmare Before Christmas is worse. So you are good.

Coraline is incredibly disturbing. Mature themes, terrifying moments, and obese women completely naked save for pasties that look more like nipples than they have any right to in a PG-rated movie. The "Other" Mother character is incredibly scary, moreso than the Oogie Boogie man in Nightmare, and even gave one of the adults in my family (that is, over the age of 40) bad dreams.

With all that being said, it's still a film that everyone should see at some point in their lives. It all depends on what your kids have been exposed to already. If your son is under the age of 8, but has seen a lot of intense movies from the past decade because you've deemed them OK, then you're probably good with showing him the film. I'll be watching it with my 8-year-old sister, who's incredibly intelligent and pop-culture savvy for her age, so we'll see what happens there. But anyone seven or under, boy or girl, I'd recommend giving it a watch yourself first to determine whether or not you'd want to screen it for your child.

I respectfully disagree.

Nightmare had severed heads!

He's 6, and Nightmare Before Christmas is probably the "scariest" movie he's ever seen (Although he has seen and loves all 3 Pirates of the Caribbean movies). It didn't scare him at all, but you make some good points. I'll take a look at it before letting him see it. Thanks.

Not going to get Watchmen.

Bought Alien Quadrilogy for 8.99. Also bought Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Also Transformers Season One and Billy Madison. Still have plenty of birthday money left.

I saw they have all four Superman films at Target for $10. Almost bought it.

If you're talking about the one that has all 4 in one box on 2 discs - be careful of those if you care about widescreen vs. full screen. There are other sets that collect 4 movies like that and you have to read the back to tell which are wide and which are full.

Not really any special features though.

Don't the third and fourth films kind of suck?

Your mileage may vary.

What it ultimately comes down to is how much the viewer likes Christopher Reeve as Superman. He's terrific in all of them, and brings even the ridiculous parts of the films up to his level.

Everyone should see them at least once, anyway. They're interesting experiences.

Just bought Green Lantern: First Flight Special Edition for 20 bucks. It came with a little Hal action figure.

I got Dark City & Blade Runner (both on Blu-Ray) from Amazon earlier this week. The Blade Runner is the 5-Disc Collector's Edition, which Amazon for $22.
