The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Loves Crappy Variant Covers

Re: Marvel to Publish Marvelman!

I'd really love to go back in time to 1992 and quietly "eliminate" the founders of Image Comics and spare us all this trouble.

I dunno, Jim Lee is still a pretty decent guy.

Re: Marvel to Publish Marvelman!

That's right, Skotti! Fight the Moon! :rockon:

Hehe.

I have to admit, most of the other founders of Image were douchebags that did little to better comics. Even then though, they let more talented people play in their playgrounds to make some pretty cool stuff. Moore's runs on Supreme, WildCats, even Youngblood (all what 2 issues?) were pretty fun.

So in review;

Wildstorm/Aegis = Great
TopCow = Generally good
Extreme/Awesome/Arcade = Cancer causing bad
Erik Larsen = Douchebag
Shadowline = not terrible
McFarland = bleh

So Image turned out to be about 20% good, the rest of it should have been aborted after the 90's ended.

Re: Marvel to Publish Marvelman!

Yeah, a lot of good work comes from Image, just rarely from the people who founded it. All I can say is that from my experience Neil Gaiman seems to be a genuinely nice guy and Erik Larsen has a chip the size of Mount Everest on his shoulder, so until I see hard evidence to the contrary, that's how I'll continue to think.

Re: Marvel to Publish Marvelman!

As for some good coming out of Image Comics? **** yeah it did, particularly in the very recent past.

Walking Dead
Casanova
Astro City
Fear Agent
Godland
all of Hickman's early stuff
I Kill Giants

Sure, a lot of the founders were douches, but since then, they've had a pretty good reputation of letting writers and artists work without oppressive editorial oversight. Alongside Avatar, I personally think they're a sight better than both DC and Marvel.

And Jim Lee is still a guilty pleasure.

Aaaaand what do we get without "oppressive" editorial oversight?

That's right, Ultimatum, and Rulk.

It's editorial that keeps putting Loeb on projects like that, and the bottom line that keeps the money rolling in.

Maybe "oppressive editorial oversight" wasn't the best term to use. Don't get me wrong. Image churns out their fair share of garbage, but they were also the company that first really championed creator rights. OTOH, Loeb is an Image alum. I think what we have to recognize is that for every under-selling media darling, there will always be ten ****-poor Michael Bay epics.

Well, yeah, Image has improved with time and started putting out a lot of good books and Jim Lee seems like an okay guy. (Still not a fan of his art though)

I just get annoyed when people like Larsen and McFarlane and Liefeld throw around their incredible "wisdom", like because they sold a bunch of ****ty comics in the early 90s that makes them great talents in the industry whose opinions deserve everyone's respect and time. To me, this is like Bernie Madoff writing a book about taking care of your finances and assuming that everyone will want to read it.

What about Cliffhanger? I loved those things when they came out. Sure, they came out less than THE ULTIMATES did, but it was always great when they hit the stands.

Robert Kirkman and the Luna Bros. for me.

Moony can kill everyone else. :)

Oh duuur, forgot about that.

Yeah, I have every issue of Crimson, Danger Girl and Battle Chasers, sadly even all together that's like only a dozen issues. -.-

No love for Steampunk and Arrowsmith? Me neither. Apparently, there was a bunch more but no one noticed and Cliffhanger made bizarre choices for what was 'Cliffhanger' and what wasn't.

The only ones I recall are the big three, Steampunk and Arrowsmith. And I only liked BC and DG.

I actually have all the Steampunk books too, as I love Bachalo. I'd forgotten it was Cliffhanger too

Does anyone happen to know when the next issue of Captain America: White comes out/is scheduled to come out (I'm assuming there have been many delays)? Much appreciated.

The Nobody was a really good graphic novel. I'm going to go back and read the creator's previous work and check out his new ongoing series, Sweet Tooth from Vertigo.
