PS3 Discussion

Re: PS3 Discussion. Come, join the laughs.

I totally love nay sayers, I remember people like you coming out of the woodwork saying the GameCube was the death of Nintendo, they've proved it was a great little machine, cus all they did was reformatted it into the Wii, and it's crushing the competition.

Blu-Ray is winning the new format war, and yes, some of us have 1080 tvs, and as much as I love my Wii, the games look like ***, when they're upscaled. If you seriously think Sony won't survive the 10 year plan, you're seriously not comparing the systems objectively.

But. . .the Gamecube did fail. It came in dead last. Hell, most people thought Nintendo would pull a Sega and become only a game developer. Of course, Nintendo had one last trick up its sleeve. The reason the Wii is beating the competition is because it's innovative, not because it's a reformatted Gamecube.

And never once did I say, or imply, that the PS3 would be the death of Sony. That's an incredible statement. Do I think there'll be a PS4? Damn right I do! And I think it'll be awesome because they will have learned of their shortcomings from the PS3. Do I think we'll be seeing it circa 2016? No, I think we'll see it when Nintendo and Microsoft unveil their 8th generation platforms.

As for Blu Ray, you're not looking at the bigger picture. You're comparing Blu Ray to HDDVD, which, yes, Blu Ray is ahead. But, you're forgetting that it still has to beat DVD, which is king of the mountain. Thing is, people took 20 years to collect their VHS collections before they were willing to replace them with a new format. DVD has been mainstream for. . .about 7 years. Blu Ray has a lot of work ahead of it, and that's if another, better, cheaper format doesn't come out within the next few years.

As for you having a 1080 TV, my point was that 1080p isn't even close to becoming standard. Just because you have one doesn't mean everyone else does. Hell, most people don't know the difference between 720p, 1080i and 1080p. So, they go with the cheaper option, so long as its HD.

I am looking at the systems objectively. I see the Wii way ahead due to it's low cost and innovation. I see the Xbox 360 as a strong contender due to it's games and power, as well as it's decent price point. I see the PS3 with a price drop less than 8 months after its out, and people still complaining about it being expensive. Hell, it's the same thing that happened last generation, but in reverse. The PS3 may be the stronger system, but it's price keeps people away when the cheaper, less powerful systems gain a foothold. Just like the Xbox and PS2 last generation. And don't forget that Sony is now losing about 300 dollars per system as opposed to the 200 dollar loss just a week ago.

Finally, remember, it's all about the games. And, without any killer aps in the next six months, people aren't going to buy a PS3. Compared to, say, Halo, Blue Dragon, Bioshock or Mass Effect on the 360 or Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Bros Brawl on the Wii. You could say GTA4, but it's cross platform. The exclusives are going to win this war, and the PS3 just doesn't have any that are really worth the price tag yet.

I'm sorry, but coming in "dead last" versus the other systems doesn't mean it failed. It means it didn't sell as good as the others (which in turn eventually did. It was way long after, not long, but it did for a bit). It still sold great numbers, enough to keep it afloat just like the other systems. That there means it was sucessful. So you're wrong there.

Well, it wasn't the best example. It came in last because of its limited market approach rather than being very highly priced, like the PS3 is. But, yes, it sold decently despite its competition from the highly successful PS2 and more powerful Xbox.

We could use other examples of consoles failing, however. The Dreamcast immediately comes to mind. The Saturn, as well, along with the Atari Jaguar, the 3D0 and the Neo Geo, the latter three failing due to their high price point.

Don't forget Lynx, Sony has the Final Fantasy and MGS franchises, as well as the DCU MMO, the God of War series, LAIR, and Heavenly Sword. Plus they get first release on several other cross platform games.

With Capcom going "No Exclusive" it's just making it a better thing for people who want a game or two without buying a whole new console, no matter what the console is.

Oh, I haven't. It was more of a hypothetical "If MGS and FF go cross platform" kind of thing. While God of War is certainly proven, I don't think we'll see GoW 3 for some time yet. As for Lair and Heavenly Sword, they're untested franchises. From what I've seen, Lair left a lot to be desired, gameplay-wise, while Heavenly Sword seems to be pretty solid, although previews is all I have to go on. As for the DCU MMO. . .we'll see.

In short, I was primarily talking about the change in a lot of third party developers' mindsets from exclusives to cross-platform. Let's just say, E3 will be quite interesting this year.

Overall, I like Sony. I thought the PSone, PS2 and even the PSP were all decent machines, if a bit shoddily made. The problem is Sony got overconfident with the success of the PS2. They charged an exuberant price for both the PSP and PS3. I waited until the PSP dropped to $169 before I bought it because $200 was just far too expensive for a handheld. Just like I'll be waiting for the $399 price drop for the PS3, and even then, I think that's pushing the limit on price.

Yeah, it really seems people tend to forget, Sony can survive on PS2 sales. The big rumor is there will be another price drop for christmas. I'm kinda feeling that the phase 1 release was only a paid Beta Test.

Re: PS3 Discussion. Come, join the laughs.

Kojami is likely leaving his exclusiveness and going multi-platform. It's been mentioned that it's where he's going next. So we know we will see MGS on other systems.

Wonderful, if true. I just don't see how they could take such a hit to the wallet, though. I also feel bad for those who paid full price for it. . .

Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease let this be true!

Snake on Smash bros. Wii Metal gear solid?

Re: PS3 Discussion. Come, join the laughs.

You all do remember, MGS did go to other consoles, but YEARS after their Sony debut.

Yeah, Twin Snakes went to the Gamecube several years later, but MGS2, I think, went to the Xbox only about a year after the original Sons of Liberty release. MGS3 was PS2 exclusive, even Subsistence.

Re: PS3 Discussion. Come, join the laughs.

If a MGS game comes out for Wii that is anything like Twin Snakes, I'll pass. That sucked.

Not to get off topic or anything.

I thought it was just the first one remade.

Re: PS3 Discussion. Come, join the laughs.

It was the first one remade to play like the second.

like the new final fantasy III on DS has been remade to be more like current ones but still keeping some of the old things?

I don't know. I haven't played it. It's like $40 here - I only ever played 1, 7, & 8 and I didn't like them that much.

But as far as I know, yes.
