PS3 Discussion

Re: PS3 Discussion. Come, join the laughs.

Aren't they optimistic.

My first thought was "How old is this guy?"

With Sony saying Ps3 is will still be around in ten years, Ken better be in good health.

Re: PS3 Discussion. Come, join the laughs.

No to beat a dead horse, but I was thinking the same thing.

I mean, there has been plenty of talk about the failure of the PS3 completely sinking Sony. That's incredible - Sony is a huge company.

And I know there are people that love it, but the truth of the mater is that no one is buying the PS3. And it's looking more and more like BluRay is going to go the way of the UMD.

I doubt the PS3 could sink Sony, even if none of them sold. Their movie division alone can pick that slack up. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 was scrapped at some time and they took a couple years to figure out their mistakes and came back at it with a vengeance.

I'm sure it meant the electronics division, which is still huge. As I understand it they have been having problems for a while and the PlayStation has always been the one thing that went right for them.

Well. . .Blu-Ray is beating HD-DVD in the sales department, but I'm still under the opinion that this "HD Format War" is completely pointless at this point. I guarantee, in two or three years, we'll see the true successor to the DVD and both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will be for nothing.

I would bet against Blu-Ray just based on the past performance of past Sony proprietary formats - MiniDisc and UMD specifically.

How can you forget BETAMAX!? Easily their worst failure.

It seems like one week the numbers come in and HD-DVD is winning, the next it's Blu-Ray on top. It's still way to close to call, really. I have to agree that in the next couple of years a new format will make HD discs obsolete. My guess is in the form of downloadable HD content.

As mush as I loved my Minidisc player, MP3 players are just so much better, imo. Minidiscs would have been a great technology if they would have come out a couple of years before the Ipod craze. Even the high capacity MDs couldn't hold a candle to a 30gb harddrive.

UMDs are just a terrible idea. Why would anyone buy a UMD with less content than a DVD and be limited to playing it on just your PSP. The price didn't help the format much either.

I'm keeping all my DVDs. Right now Blu-ray is just a bonus feature on my PS3, if it takes off then I can see myself buying more movies on Blu-ray. I only have two, and they are pretty sweet but I'm not sure if it's worth the price.

There are DVD players that can upscale your DVDs to 1080p (like the Oppo DV-981HD for $229.00), so the only advantage to Blu-ray would be a higher resolution and bigger capicity.

Digital distribution, as much as I love "hard" media, is the way of the future. It's already taken hold of the music market through MP3s and it's only a matter of time before it overtakes the movie market as well. Downloadable HD content is likely the next true successor of DVD.

I didn't know that was a Sony failure. You'd think they'd get a clue by now.

The problem with the Minidisc was how tight Sony controlled the licensing. It didn't make financial sense for anyone to bother licensing, and it turned out that Sony/Columbia was *almost* the only label to ever put anything out on MD. Not smart if you want your format to become a standard.

As for the UMD - definitely the worst format of our generation. Stupid all around for the same reasons you mentioned.

Re: PS3 Discussion. Come, join the laughs.

Personally, I have no use for HD or Blurays. So far, there doesn't seem to be any difference in the actual content, other than crappier cases and resolution. I couldn't care less about resolution. DVD's fine for me. I'm not paying an extra €30 for a crappier case and the ability to see Tom Cruise's teeth more clearly.

But Xenu has blessed him with some pearly, pearly whites.

Re: PS3 Discussion. Come, join the laughs.

I never understood why the title of this thread has the "Come join the laughs" in it.

Was it meant to be an insult?

After reading the first few pages and comparing them to the last few, I'm laughing now.

What a difference a year makes.

What's different?

It's still way too expensive and has no games of interest. And it still isn't selling.

I didn't mean that.

Everything you say is absolutely true.

I was pointing out certain "opinions" had changed.

Re: PS3 Discussion. Come, join the laughs.

The games are coming soon and they will be amazing.
FFXIII!

I've said it many times before, only reason why I want a PS3 is because all the good RPGs are on there. And MGS4. But with the talks of rumors of Kojima not being exclusive anymore, and if Square Enix does the same, then we'll have to see what happens.

Yeah, but will they be exclusive?

I thought I had read that all game publishers had pulled any exclusivity contracts they had with Sony...
