Bleach is about a bunch of Shinigami (Death Gods) who have boring, drawn out fight sequences whilst doing mind numbingly boring tasks to upgrade their swords. Basically? It's Dragon Ball Z but with hipper outfits.

Quite you.

Bleach's fights aren't any more drawn out than Naruto's, or any other shonen action type manga.

Johnny: Bleach is about a teenager named Ichigo who becomes a substitute Shinigami when the one assigned to protect his town (Rukia) gets injured in a fight and has to transfer her powers to Ichigo so that he can save his family form an evil spirit (called hollows). The series goes from there introducing the rest of the cast, plot, etc.

Yeah...hate Naruto for the exact same reasons

Supposingly Bleach gets better the farther it goes, intorducing mysteries and subplots that make the fight scenes take a second stage.

But everytime I try, I just can't get byt he first few episodes.

Seriously, I am totally ****ing peeved by the amount of (potentially undue) praise that fans give to Studio Ghibli movies (in general) and Hayao Miyazaki films (in particular), seemingly because a bunch of Middlebrow Pop Critics have decided that they're somehow Deep and Meaningful, and will give Japanese animation the Serious Artistic Acclaim it has long been denied. What****ingever.

And the worst part about it is that this sick Miyazaki-philia seems to even affect people would ordinarily be suspicious about the praise given to, say, Maus, or Watchmen, or any other comic deemed "important" by non-comic-reading audiences, just because of the amount of critical praise it's recieved. It makes me want to hurl!

Ooh, it's a Japanese cartoon but it's not 120 episodes of samurai and/or shiganami fighting over honor... it must be Important.

Kind of off topic, but I wish people would give Satoshi Kon more love. All of you with TiVo: Tokyo Godfathers is the title of a movie he made. Put it on your wishlist NOW! It was ****ing hilarious. Paranoia Agent was practically a miniseries, it was only fourteen episodes, but it had more depth, meaning and emotion than most ongoing live-action series. The animation on all of them is so detailed, it makes the Dragonball Z, Bleach or Naruto animes look like flash cartoons. Seriously, Satoshi Kon kicks Miyazaki's ***, and I don't say that lightly.

I agree with this.

Also, TwilightEL is correct. Satoshi Kon > Hayao Miyazaki.

Might I add Perfect Blue to that list... It's got a number of obvious flaws, but the plotting is a total mind****, and the quality of the animation is exceptional. It ought to appeal to people who like David Fincher's movies, or stuff by Darren Aronofsky.

And I've been meaning to check out both Millennium Actress, for the longest time now. I saw the first half hour or so, and it was very intriguing.

I haven't seen enough of Satoshi Kon's work to say definitively that he could kick Miyazaki's Parkinson's-afflicted ***, but I'm inclined to believe this is accurate, based on what I know of Kon's filmogrpahy.

To be fair, I like to divvy them up this way.

Miyazaki is the 20th century. Hence a fixation with nature, images of flight, the spectre of apocalyptic scenarios, yada yada yada yada...

Kon is the 21st century. Issues of fragmented identity, memory and perception through media, changing concepts of 'fatherhood' and a fluid notion of 'parent' identity, etc.

So yeah, I can see why anyone would favor Kon over Miyazaki. But only because Miyazaki is SOOO last century. And I mean it in all non-facetious seriousness and with absolutely no condescension.

Actually, what makes Miyazaki so loved is it's haiku level of simplicity. In this age of cynicism, hate and intolerance, as you so willingly displayed, people want a softer more elegant story with a happy ending. Personally, I find your venom fueled rant a bit amusing, as what makes your opinion any more valid than those "Middlebrow Pop Critics" you rave against.

Personally, I only enjoy Miyazaki as for what it is, soft fair. It's not earth shaking, but it is solid entertainment. I believe Kon is just as overrated as you claim Miyazaki is, his work is repetitive and obtuse for the sake of being "edgy". Granted, I freely admit, Paprika is in my opinion one of the most beautifully crafted work in a LONG time.

But, all in all, that is only my opinion. Like *******s, we all have one and they usually stink.

I've heard and seen the exact opposite. It gets worse imo

Also, I saw Devil May Cry, ****ing kick ***. It was awesome. Reminds me of Berserk in alot of ways. I would reccommend Berserk, but I know ALOT of people would be pissed at the ending.

Yeah, I have no idea why Hayao Miyazaki is so popular. I don't know what was so great about Spirited Away, and yet all of these critics loved it...

Pop culture critics like to think they're cultured cosmopolitans. Pretentious twits, they are.
