Avengers New Avengers discussion (#1-20; spoilers)

Bendis has made some fairly snarky comments about Nicieza in the past, and I think in his last Q and A said something about the Thunderbolts plot line like "Nicieza does what Nicieza does" - ie: "and I don't give a damn."
It's a damn shame too... I don't know if I should be more upset that Fabian doesn't give a **** or that Bendis doesn't like him. I don't read Thunderbolts but I know Cable/Deadpool are squarein' off against New Avengers starting next month so I just hope everything's in order and makes sense.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

I think that Bendis is worse. Least with Fabian, he didn't screw anything up with the New Avengers, he gave a subplot that's a damn good one to follow, and we'll rarely see that in New Thunderbolts again, because it's not like he'll have the New Avengers guest star every other issue. This could've gone great in NA.

*sigh*

#14

All about two people. Jessica and Nick Fury. Good, solid issue.

Jessica tells her entire deal. She's a double agent working for Fury and Hydra. She's still a good guy obviously. A lot of dialogue but it comes down to Fury still being alive and something bad happening with SHIELD.

The end is the world wondering what's going on with "The Watchtower" that has suddenly appeared over Stark Towers. They'll have to go public now.

Props to Bendis for referencing "Godseye".

3.5/5

It's another comic book from another company that the artist, Frank Cho, worked on.

No, no, it's way more than that - Liberty Meadows is Frank Cho's personal pet project, known for having an extremely larged-chested main character (Brandy) in a... call it Pogo-esque setting.

Okay, thanks. All I knew is that he drew it.

Bendis throwing away stories? Nonsense!

I think this is the best issue since the relaunch. Great artwork and better than usual dialogue.

The Ronin arc was disappointing for me. This issue has the book redeemed in my eyes.

I really like the direction things are going with Jess and Fury. This is really weird for me; a year ago I couldn't have cared less about the Avengers or Nick Fury, but Bendis is doing great with both. The continuation from Secret War is working out very well.

I agree. And I really felt the ending of Secret War fell short. Because we didn't have to wait too long for the story to pick up again has me completely pysched. And you're all bashing Bendis for...? The man is tying in his titles as much as needed. He made references to Daredevil that were needed for that interaction. What happened in Secret War is very much needed for the upcoming NA story. Good writing and control over the mythologies.

Ok, so not I'm gonna have to read Secret War (well, I was gonna anyway). Is there something I should read before it to understand the mini?

Absolutely not. :)

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

So, I picked up #14 for Mister Frank Cho.

I was bored and started just ignoring the Bendis chatter until the bottom of page 15 when I saw that this had something to do with Secret War - which was also stupid. So, I kept on reading, and at the end, I was impressed. I liked Wolverine's assessment of Jess, I liked Spidey's "we have shirts" comments, but was sorely disappointed in the Sentry who seems to have walked into the title by accident. Also, I like Luke Cage's second new power - "Sticking it to the Man" look at him swear at Fury. That's character for you. (Okay, I admit, that's harsh - I actually found Cage funny.)

Then you've got the Avengers going public, Fury being all triple-quadruple agenty with Spider-Woman and I went, "Hmm! This is interesting!"

And for a short moment, I thought, "Hey, maybe I should pick up the rest and see where this is going."

But then, I remembered that this is Bendis. Bendis knows how to start a story, he knows how to make it engaging, exciting, he knows how to get you into a story.

He doesn't have a ****ing clue how to end them. Daredevil, Ultimate Spider-Man, Powers, Alias - his endings are never worth the five-issue build up. So here Bendis 'pays off' his Spider-Woman arc - by setting up another arc (see? That way he doesn't have to end the story! Very clever.) just like he 'ended' House of M by setting up another crossover, and Powers by releasing a new edition of Powers... so yeah. This issue was good. But anyone can make something sound very exciting if they're going to wuss out and deus ex machina the ending, like Bendis always does. So this issue was good. It's not going anywhere worthwhile.

Frank Cho rocks though.

He also rocks at action sequences, as evidenced by Shanna and his Spider-Man issues - in case anyone wants to tell Bendis that.

Or maybe #15 is going to be set in the dining room as Iron Man and Captain America examine a candlestick.

If Daredevil #81 is bad, I'll cut my toes off. I do agree with him falling short though. When some story that's supposed to be a major event occurs, Bendis falls short more than not. (Breakout, Sentry)

You picked a bad issue to be looking for action. Possibly even a bad arc. Sometimes a lack of action doesn't annoy me as much as it should but seeing how we're dealing with Fury, something I don't want resolved in a one issue fight type deal, I'm ok with the fact there's little action and all covert, spy talk. Another thing is "going public". Sure, there might be a small fight but it won't be anything more than an excuse to show the Avengers fight in a public setting so that they get bombarded by the media afterwards.

It's not that it lacked of action - it lacked of conflict.

Actions of revelation should be as dramatically exciting as any fisticuffs.

"I am your father" proved this 20 years ago.
