Avengers New Avengers discussion (#1-20; spoilers)

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

Well, once again, that was disapointing. Bendis just keeps hitting on these anti-climactic endings. I'm giving him one more arc, if the title hasn't turned around I'm dropping it.

Art was alright. Nothing spectacular.

I'm fine with Echo, but I'm also the only person around my area who reads comics and know who she is. I just had to keep saying "She's like the Taskmaster." over and over.

I was disappointed in how the Silver Samuri thing ended. I didn't hate it though.

As far as anti-climatic endings, I think Bendis is really, truly trying to write an ongoing story here. When you do that, not everything is going to get tied up at the end of the arc. I prefer that - I hate the "villain of the week" stories that he was falling into on USM with Carnage and Hobgoblin.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

Liked the issue. Overall really thought the arc was good.

I liked the Silver Samurai's change in character and his attacking America and then Cap's spiel about it not being America's fault and it's not their government anymore. Some people should take that little bit of dialogue to bed with them.

Yeah, Iron Man is kind've a one man army but I don't have a problem with it. That's what the suits for, right?

The dialogue with Cage and Spider-Man with Echo was funny. It was like Bendis was taking a shot with everyone guessing who Ronin was.

Nothing about the reveal being Echo was cool except we'll be seeing more of her from now on. E's right and it was hyped for no reason and I was frustrated to see she wears this costume and suddenly she lives in Japan? Echo has nothing to do with The Hand or Japan. Ronin wasn't even a big part of this arc. I was more interesting in Silver Samurai's story. But yeah, Echo... very cool.

The scene with Jessica ejecting MH and CA. I went into it knowing there'd be confusion with the art, like E said. But because I went into it knowing but I thought the scene was pretty well done. The looks back and forth and then the scene at the end at breakfast... pretty cool. And Echo "knowing" how to fly the plane... cool.

I liked it better then the conclusion of the Breakout arc and The Sentry all together. Bendis has something big happening in the MU and I love the intrigue of it all.

4/5

I really like how Bendis is writing Spider-Man in this book. He's not a team guy and he's not going to be a leader on this team. It just ain't gonna happen. He's more in the background, making jokes, which is exactly how he should be.

What is the point of making it a secret identity if no one who it is?!

Maybe this should be in the Baseless Speculation department. What if Ronin was going to be DareDevil and then the response was so bad, Bendis backed off it? That's why Echo disappears so quickly at the end of the issue. She doesn't even come in for coffee or to use the bathroom. My guess is he's going to find another different way to get Matt into the story.

See, my problem here is that I DON'T think Spider-Man is funny, I think he sounds like he's about 15 and trying to be funny, in that "I'll keep throwing out inappropriate remarks and one of them will be funny eventually" way. He's supposed to be at least in his mid/late 20s, isn't he? Teaches in a high school? For those of you who read USM, how much does the NA Spider-Man sound like the Ultimate Spider-Man?

The brightest point for me is that Cap actually SOUNDS like Cap in the last third of the issue, whereas I've been thinking he might be a Skrull or something equally ridiculous. In earlier issues, too often he goes from full out "I am Captain America and you will do what I say!" mode when he's shouting at the villains to someone who is indecisive and hesitant. Brubaker has the FAR better take on Cap, with Epting's art showing Cap's internal struggles that Brubaker's scripts hint at.

Good that Luke Cage got to finally do and SAY something - I barely knew who the character WAS (except through Alias) before this and in 12 issues he'd remained almost a total blank.

How odd that Ronin turned into such a... non-issue. While a bunch of the hype was internet created, it was all certainly fanned along by Marvel in covers and interviews. It did get the issue talked about, which is, I guess, the point, but it somehow feels like Marvel WANTS an adversarial role with fans on this particular title.

Also odd that Iron Man has gone back to being generous with the money, offering to fund an entire team. I dunno, maybe his investments have done well.

Never a fan of ninjas, I'm glad to see this story arc over. Of course, the next one is already spoiled, but the whole "Avengers go public" might actually be interesting and I might, just MIGHT, start paying for the comic if it gets interesting.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

But the thing is, we're talking about one alter-ego. Spider-Man. That's part of him. Throwing inappropriate lines, sounding the way he does, that's HIM. Spider-Man, not Peter Parker. So of course the two will sound different. Two "different" people.

Huh...I think he's got Spidey right. He's on a team and in a new situation. Jitters, maybe?

Maybe it's just me, but I've never known his jokes to be particularly clever. If you want to call it juvenille, I guess I'm saying that's what I expect out of him in these situations.

As for comparisons, maybe it is just me again, but NA Spider-Man reads TOTALLY different than Ultimate.

I think Spider-Man's brilliant. I hate when he opens his mouth and that's just the annoying, usually loner superhero should be played. I really think Bendis does a great job with him.

I really thought that Bendis has given Luke Cage his due plenty. In Daredevil and in New Avengers. Bendis is responsible from taking a character that we'd all look at as a typical ghetto african american thug to just a cool and essential dynamic too this team. But I don't understand how you can say Spider-Man talks too much and there's not enough Cage. Those two interact a lot. Once one of them say something the other is usually right there.

But they're ninjas... No really, The Hand's always a good time because it's not just random ninjaness. It's an organization there's politics involved.

My perspective here is that I don't really KNOW who Luke Cage is (yeah, yeah, I know his origin story, I know a little about him from Alias - not that I liked what I learned in Alias). I know what Spider-Man is doing in New Avengers - he's there to sell books and tell excruciating jokes. But Luke Cage doesn't bring in that massive fan base, he doesn't have a unqiue power that no one else on the team can't fill in for, so Bendis had to want him there for an actual PLOT/dynamic reason, and other than the scene with Cap where Cap recruits him, he's had almost nothing of any impact to say, nothing to tell me who he is or why he's there. This issue he at least TRIED to have an opinion on something.

I had this whole big thing written debating with you but simply put I see the exact opposite besides the fact he doesn't bring in massive fans. But Luke Cage will get fans while he's on this team.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

Luke Cage has a super power not duplicated on the team.

The power of "Black". Just like Ronin/Echo has "Hispanic" powers. Now, all we need is a chink...

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

Luke Cage is not just a toss on African American. We're talking about the superhero community within New York and Cage was a prominent member of that little cult. There's no reason he wouldn't have been chosen. Not too mention he was there during the breakout.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

I was reading the hardback "Avengers, the Ultimate Guide" and near the back they have a page on the New Avengers, and it has Ronin....... and it reveals that it is Echo..... now i got this book last week, and didn't even notice (or think) the little thing on Ronin.
Oh well just saying that this book revealed who ronin was before the comic had even come out

Yeah, that's why it wasn't really a suprise to most people.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

The only thing i thought it was interesting in this issue was the whole Silver Samurai thing, the rest was crappy, specially all the hype with echo...never heard of her

Spider-Woman looks like one. So does Captain America. And Iron Man. Oh, wait, that's just Finch!

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

Would it be possible for someone to ask Bendis on his board if he's going to go with what Fabian Nicieza did in New Thunderbolts about the Avengers Tower now being bugged and all.

Oh, and he'll mention the guys fighting them, too.

Bendis has made some fairly snarky comments about Nicieza in the past, and I think in his last Q and A said something about the Thunderbolts plot line like "Nicieza does what Nicieza does" - ie: "and I don't give a damn."
