Lost *spoilers*

So this episode was okay, I wasn't expecting much from it. So it seems Sayid has the sickness, I'm guessing the same one Rousseau 's team got. But holy **** Claire has it too? And it would seem that the sickness is when they are taken by The Monster's influence, or something along those lines. I wonder why then Jacob would want Sayid saved. Next episode looks great

I felt so bad for Sawyer. :(

Meh, it seems he always has sand in his vagina over 1 thing or another.

I get irritated when the characters don't think. When Miles told him that Juliet wanted to say "it worked" you would think that after everything they had all been through that would have set off all kinds of bells and whistles in Sawyers big dumb head. But nooooo...."what worked?" he says.

I wanted to yell at the TV.... WHAT DO YOU THINK DUMMY??!!!!

Good episode.

The alternate reality was just alright, enjoyable for an episode focusing on Kate... I guess. Ethan but this time going by Goodspeed. Cool.

On island, I thought it was awesome (with the exception of there being no Locke). Sayid is alive, but is infected as the French team was. The Temple Dwellers are intriguing characters and Jack was back to his good ol' self which was good after he could have been blown over by a small breeze last season. Claire being back will be interesting... Especially since they immediately addressed the brother/sister relationship Jack and Claire have (or do not have, for that matter).

I really don't mind, what is he suppose to think, I means right before that she was talking about getting coffee. It seems obvious to us because we know it worked. From Sawyer's point of view it obviously didn't work, the Swan is still there. Think the movie Signs, the wife's last words seemed so random, just an obscure memories as she dies, later it turns out to be a prediction but before that just an odd line. There's no logical reason for Sawyer to be obsessing over these last words or to suddenly say "It must mean alternate time lines" when she was more likely in a delusional state. There's just no reason for him to think that conclusion

Yeah I see what you are saying and I thought all that also.

But it isn't as though he hasn't spent the last x number of days/months skipping through time before ending up in 197x where he lives for 3 yrs before his time traveling companions show up with the idea of setting off a nuke based on the idea that they could stop all of this from ever happening and when they finally set off the nuke they suddenly wake up in current time and his gf dies and she says "IT WORKED!" you would think he would at least make SOME kind of connection. Mind you, "IT WORKED" wasn't her dying rambling, but was revealed by Miles AFTER she died. He asked Miles to do that so I would expect him to not just ignore her words and make SOME kind of connection.

I don't expect the character to see it the way we do as viewers but sheesh.

Anyway, your prob right.

Well what is he suppose to do with those words? I feel that may be in the back of his mind but all of reality around him says differently, so even if he does come to that conclusion what should he be doing about that? It's time for him to grief not uncover the huge mind **** of what reality has become.

so i finally was able to watch it. These Flash-sideways are really tripping me out.

Ethan Goodspeed! "I wouldn't want to poke you with needles if I don't have to!" haha

Was it just me or did alternate-reality Kate seem to recognize Jack when she saw him and Aaron's name when she heard it?

So Smokey can not only manifest himself as people who have died, he can also "claim" or "infect" them. I wonder if this has anything to do with Desmond's inoculations/the Quarantine sign from the hatch...remember that Claire took the inoculations, so is she able to be "claimed"?
And do the people who are "claimed" have to die?
And does being "claimed" have anything to do with Ben being healed at the temple and losing his innocence?

I love the interaction between Jack and Dogen. "I was brought here, just like everyone else" and the talk about being a leader and having to separate himself from his people. It ties into the themes of leadership in Jack's character development.

EDIT: so have any of you heard of a book called Lost Horizon? It's a book written in 1933 about a plane that crashes in the Himalayas. The survivors find there the lost city of Shangra-La. They want to leave, but the inhabitants won't help them leave. They eventually find out that those who live in Shangra-La have unnaturally long life.
The Leader of the inhabitants is called the High Lama. The main character of the book, Robert Conway, is told by the High Lama that they were brought there purposefully b/c the Lama is finally dying after living for 300 years and he wants Conway to replace him as leader. Conway leaves and forgets ever having been there, but regains his memories and goes back, presumably to take the High Lama's place as leader.

Interesting similarities.

This episode was weird, but I can see it all coming to a head soon... Which makes me anxious for more. That's LOST for you...

I like how we are getting to know the Smoke Monster as a character -- a man -- and how it is ironic how he has taken the form of John Locke. The scenes where we got incite on him (with Richard and that awfully creepy little kid... A younger Jacob?) were incredible... Couldn't believe how they made me like that there is a fraudulent Locke.

The stuff with Sawyer finding out about who will take over for Jacob is interesting and makes me wonder who will fill those shows in the long run. My roommate turned to me at the point in the Alt. Reality where Locke met Hurley and said "He's reminding me a lot of Jacob right now." I liked that very much... Although I think he'll ultimately become a follower of Jack.

The Alt. Reality stuff, by the way, is getting too puzzling now... And frustrating because it seems a lot like filler. Awesome filler, but I want to see it become relevant.

Holy ****, I love that they included the numbers here, so candidates are for Jacob's position as leader. I can't wait to see what the actual threat ot the island is, it's gonna be epic.

Also I squeeled like a girl when I saw Helen. I was so happy for Locke. Lost is the only show that can make me care about a love story.

I agree, Though my bet for the kid is Aaron

I bet you it will be relevant, remember what Juliet said "We can get coffee, we can go dutch" and "it worked" I believe this indicate the flash is more than a mere storytelling device and that she will go out for coffee with someone in the other reality. The flash sideways may seem filler but there's a point where these two realities will collide, I almost guarantee it.

i kind of hope the flash sideways eventually showed what happened to Jacob and Esau/smokey/nemesis when the island sank.

Okay other thoughts.

THE NUMBERS ARE PEOPLE! why wasn't Kate one of the candidates? Jacob touched her too.
also, if the numbers are the constants of the Valinzetti equation, but Faraday says that people are variables in the equation, what does that mean?
Who were all the other names that were crossed out?
and what do the specific numbers mean. And why the heck didn't Sawyer look at the numbers and say, "hey, those were the numbers we had to punch into that computer in the hatch!"
and does this relate to Hurley winning the lottery and having good luck? (maybe the guy at Santa Rosa never heard the numbers over the radio and so Hurley never used them to win)

Helen and Locke are back together, but Locke is still paralyzed. But Helen says they're going to invite his dad to the wedding! So did he not steal Locke's kidney and then push him out a window? and what if he never conned Sawyer's mom?

Benjamin Linus the school teacher was awesome!

why is Smokey confined to Locke's form now?

I'm kind of thinking that smokey was a man that was tricked into becoming smokey and is now trapped on the island. He killed Jacob and is trying to trick Sawyer into taking his place. At the end of this all, Jack replaces Jacob and Sawyer replaces smokey.

EDIT: oh, the episode was called "the substitute" well, obviously Locke became a substitute teacher, but the second meaning probably has to do with who is going to replace Jacob, or maybe Flocke.

So I just recaped the last 4 seasons for a hot friend of mine (some of you may remember Sexyloli) I do not recommend trying that.

THE NUMBERS ARE PEOPLE! why wasn't Kate one of the candidates? Jacob touched her too.
I'm pretty sure she was, but apparrantly not. Maybe she's a different number?
also, if the numbers are the constants of the Valinzetti equation, but Faraday says that people are variables in the equation, what does that mean?
That if Dharma was able to change the outcome the number would mean different people
Who were all the other names that were crossed out?
They died would be my guess

Cause Sawyer had limitted interactions with the swan and 3 years later probably didn't care enough to remember those numbers, specially when seeing them out of order with the stranger idea of his name being there.
Helen and Locke are back together, but Locke is still paralyzed. But Helen says they're going to invite his dad to the wedding! So did he not steal Locke's kidney and then push him out a window? and what if he never conned Sawyer's mom?
Everything changes after the explosion, Sawyer said his parents died a year before that, so maybe Cooper had a change of heart at some point.
Benjamin Linus the school teacher was awesome!
Indeed
why is Smokey confined to Locke's form now?
Most likely a plot device they'll come up with an explanation later

I think if Smocke can either turn them and/or kill them all he'll be able to stop the cycle completely. I don't think he wants anyone to take his spot.

I'm pretty sure she was, but apparrantly not. Maybe she's a different number?
they didn't show her name and there was a name for each of the 6 numbers.

That if Dharma was able to change the outcome the number would mean different people
yeah, but people are variables, numbers are constants.

They died would be my guess
 thanks. But who were they? has this happened before?

I guess that could be true. I don't really remember Sawyer pushing the button much.

Everything changes after the explosion, Sawyer said his parents died a year before that, so maybe Cooper had a change of heart at some point.
That's clearly the idea. I wasn't asking a question so much as thinking about the implications "out loud"

Indubitably.

Most likely a plot device they'll come up with an explanation later
I'm sure, again, just thinking outloud about all the questions this episode brought to my mind.

You might be right. Except the kid, whoever that was, told him he couldn't kill Sawyer. And, Sawyer almost fell off the ladder, so he could have let him die (not killed him, but not saved him either...like Batman). And then why was the episode called "The Substitute"?

Terry O'Quinn is amazing.

Jack, Hurley, Sayid and either Sun or Jin (and maybe Sawyer if he switches sides) are left to defeat the nemesis and save the island. I think it's pretty odd that Kate is not on the list.

I really want them to explain why Sun didn't time travel off the plane with the rest of them. This annoys me so much.

Next episode: The Lighthouse.

by the way, here is the numbers/candidates list

4-Locke, 8-Reyes, 15-Ford, 16-Jarrah, 23-Shephard, 42-Kwon

I'm sure this isn't really significant, but Psalm 23 starts off, "The Lord is my Shephard"
