Heroes seasons 1 & 2 series discussion [spoilers]

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

On the HEROES website, they have put up some nice "wallpapers". One touch that I especially appreciated is that Nikki is standing in front of a puddle. Her reflection in the puddle is her "doppleganger" - her hands are on her hips, while Nikki is standing with her hands folded in front of her.

What is also interesting ... maybe... is that, to me, the reflection of the "mind reading cop" looks a bit "off". Now, I may be overthinking, or just plain seeing it wrong, but to me, the cop's reflection does not appear to be a simple mirror image of his face. Thoughts anyone? Just a case of a small image being ambiguous?

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

My theory is that Claire's real parents were just operatives of whatever conspiracy group her father works for. Just actors used to get Claire to either come out or calm down. Not exactly sure.

??? Wasn't that laid out for us this episode? Claire's dad just got them to fake being her parents.

I'm starting to hate Hiro's friend. Why say that you need to go to the bathroom when you could just tell Hiro that he has a gun and you need to get rid of it? Or better yet---why not just freeze time...take all the moeny and run. By the time you get to the car and unfreeze time---that'll give you a good headstart. I don't know....I'm just rambling. But I guess it turned out ok in the end since if they'd have stayed Nikki would've ripped them apart.

People are giving Hiro WAY too much credit. He has a massively amazing power. To help regulate its usage, the writers have shown that he has to concentrate to use it. Hiro can't be relied on to use his power perfectly in tense situations. If Hiro's friend had just said something to Hiro, Hiro would have probably been surprised and gave away what was up, even if nobody in that room speaks Japanese. It makes complete sense that you'd want to get Hiro alone to tell him anything like 'that guy has a gun and you need to do something about it'.

And my last theory---there was some science talk that went over my head a few pages back that may back this theory up---but I believed that the symbol was a key of some sorts. Like if you trace that shape over the genetics code Mohinder was looking at, that it would reveal a missing gene or some way tracking all the heroes down. So I think I was wrong. The symbol is similar to a DNA/RNA (not sure which is which----still technically don't care)module. Kinda like a missing piece of a puzzle. When I saw that piece I instantly thought of the genetics recombination sequence from Spiderman1 film.

What's really weird is HOW it shows up. On Nikki, it's a tattoo that comes and goes. With the program code that 'deciphers' everything, it's a shape you can see in the code. That part REALLY doesn't seem to make sense. Sure, it's a nice visual gimmick to tie things together, but it's otherwise nonsensical right now.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

I think that Nikki's Doppleganger might be Sylar . . . could be.

I have to wonder if Claire's Dad is a bad guy, myself.

I saw Eden being one of the "Bad Guys" in her first appearance. That's wasn't a twist, it was obvious.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Re Hiro, the gun under the table, etc...

One of the "problems" with superpowered characters is that it can become tricky to challenge them, to make them appear to be in trouble, etc. If a character becomes TOO powerful, he or she seems to have a way out of almost ever dilemma (except, perhaps, for MORAL dilemmas!).

If Hiro can simply stop time, quickly, easily, anytime he wants to, with no real "cost", then... in the vast vast vast majority of situations, things are going to get very boring, very quickly. He would, of course, still be vulnerable to the absolutely random, and to long range attacks (like a sniper), etc, etc, but in an awful lot of situations, folks are just going to be asking why he didn't stop time at the first hint of ANYTHING untoward... (for example - when the car pulled up behind them at the parking garage, or at the very moment they realize it is the guys they "cheated" at poker earlier!). So it seems natural to me, from a practical standpoint, that the writers try not to "abuse" that as a way out... (I think a similar "challenge" surrounds Claire. It seems clear she will be somehow "vulnerable" to Sylar, or to some other threat... otherwise, it will fast become "Yawn - oh look, the girl who doesn't feel pain and can regenerate from any damage is being threatned with a knife... gun... tank... flamethrower... chainsaw... hand grenade... bazooka...etc").

Granted, it is tricky, and if not handled well, can come off as clumsy. That being said, as a viewer, I am willing to cut the writers some slack, for the sake of the storyline.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Wow, I'm surprised that most of you didn't see the Eden twist coming. This being a twisty, serialized drama, I sort of thought she was working for him (H.R.G.) when she first appeared in the second episode.

(H.R.G. is Horn-Rimmed Glasses, which is officially, as per the creator of Heroes what his name is until we really find out.)

I'm also beginning to wonder about that lizard. They've been making it a point to show him every other episode. I'm thinking that it may be a superhuman that can take on the forms of animals.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Wow, I'm surprised that most of you didn't see the Eden twist coming.

Most? I really doubt that 'most' of us didn't see it coming. I'm more surprised at people who were 'shocked' by this revelation. Have they never read comics before? :)

I think that Nikki's Doppleganger might be Sylar . . . could be.

Ah... no. That doesn't make any sense at all.

a few pages back I said that it could be 'future Peter' who mirrored Niki's power and the alternate personailty was Sylar.

Ah... still no. Sylar doesn't have the same powers as Nikki.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

No way is Nikki's alter-ego Sylar. "Bad Nikki" is a killing machine, part Wolverine, part Hulk in a sexy little package. Sylar, from the looks of it, is a more surgical, quiet killer... with at least one obvious purpose (to remove brains from heads).

Pretty sure Sylar is a completely separate character from all the others, and hopefully, the central villain of the show (for now). I don't actually think that Claire's dad is all bad, either. He seems more like a Henry Gyrich type to me. Sure, he's a prick, but he's just doing his job. After the first six episodes, I think his purpose right now is to keep tabs on the "heroes" for quick reference in case of (insert epic catastrophe here). I get a real Men In Black/Area 51 vibe from his character.

Before I forget... When Matt and the FBI agent were chasing down (the alleged) Sylar, it looked to me like he/she/it had changed form when they got up from being shot. Possible shapeshifter? Maybe I should watch it again... I dunno.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Entertainment Weekly's cover story is Heroes this week, and how it's saving NBC from total suckage this season (ratingswise).

On the cover: Hiro, Claire, and Nathan.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

What? Did everyone skip a week or something? I mean, this is a comics-related site, I figured that this discussion thread wouldn't go out with a whimper.

DISCUSS!

A new character shows up. He's got some kind of nuclear/heat projection power, Matt and the female FBI agent search for him while, thinking he may be Sylar. Looks like we've found the cause of the nuclear explosion that has been so ominous in past episodes.

Claire's brother finds out about her powers, and she has a hard time convincing him not to tell anyone.

Nikki's alter ego is apparently named "Jessica".

Micah turns out to have technopathic powers.

Willverine:

I thought the same thing - no HEROES discussion? But then...er... I didn't exactly have a lot to bring to the table myself, apart from generally enjoying the episode. Which...um... doesn't make for very good posting....

I didn't really think Niki was dead, but good to see her up, about, and largely unreformed... or, rather, that her alterego isn't much chastened. A gun seems like a questionable weapon of choice against a guy who can turn intangible, but then again, given that the series tries to stay somewhat reality-grounded, a gun is pretty effective if he doesn't know what is coming....

Quite a few here seem to have guessed where they were going with Micah, but it was an interesting sequence, regardless.

The "Nuclear Man" was interesting. Probably a BIG reach here, but I DID wonder if he has any connection to the "big boom" the HEROES seem to be destinted to (try to) prevent. Not every mushroom cloud need be nuclear, of course, but ... it did occur to me. And you, apparently! *S*

I like how they are using the "psychic cop"'s powers to allow him to be a good negotiator // diplomat, beyond simply yanking handy facts out of the heads of other characters. Nice touch.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

This was kinda a slow week for me. Aside from Claire's brother finding out and Micah having technopathic powers.....there was nothing really "awesome" to me.

Still a topnotch show.....just a meh episode for me.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

I agree. It was a decent episode and they're continuing to bring it all together, but there just wasn't anything I thought worth discussing. No great revelations. No new mysteries.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Kick ***!!! The first ten minutes I thought it was ridiculous because they introduced like 4 new powers but then that chick got killed... Still now Shuresh and the chick have powers though?

So glad to see Claire's father not truly evil.

Next week's preview is sick.

Since my girlfriend's DVR cut the show off early, can anyone fill me in on the last few minutes of the show?

As I recall, it cut out right after Mohinder opened the file he found hidden in his father's desk.

What's next, people, help a guy out here.

Same thing happened to me (well, my DVR, not your girlfriend's). NBC posts full episodes online. I'll check that out tomorrow.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

**SPOILERS (for those who recorded show!)****'

Not sure when your recording shut down, but Mohinder found a file containing info and a pic of that kid who kept appearing his dreams... and Hiro decided to travel in time to prevent the murder of the waitress. His friend suggests that is dangerous (mainly, that time travel is dangerous; Hiro does not propose to confront the killer, simply to travel back and keep the waitress from going to work that day!), but Hiro tells him that if he is afraid to risk using his powers, he doesn't deserve them. He then tries to lighten things by telling his friend that his friend should count to 4, and Hiro will be back... Hiro disappears (travels through time), his friend counts to 4... but no Hiro. However... we see a photo on the diner wall, that we saw earlier... the waitress, celebrating her birthday. Only this time, Hiro is in the pic with her (Hiro's friend does not notice this)...

PS - This is the first time - I THINK - that the writers will tackle one of those "time travel paradoxes" that make time travel fiction either fun or maddening or both... Hiro and his friend spend most of the afternoon talking with the waitress. She is murdered. Hiro goes back in time and leaves his friend sitting in a booth, promising to return. Hmm. But if Hiro truly prevents the waitress from going to the diner "that day", he will have undone the afternoon he and his friend just had. How CAN he return to his friend? The only way that works, I would think, is if you assume multiple timelines... Hiro CAN return to his friend, but in THAT timeline, the afternoon happened, and the waitress is still dead... even if she is alive in ANOTHER timeline.

Or Hiro has only affected her actions and not theirs. Still keeping them and others in the diner for that instance.

I don't think Hiro will save her. The way he thought he could just stop her from going was begging for the entire "you can't change destiny spiel". If Sylar is looking to kill this chick, then he will find her. The question I have is why didn't he take out Hiro?
