Dragonball Evolution

Re: Dragonball Z live action !

In the January 21-28, 2008 issue of TV Guide actor James Marsters (Spike, Buffy/Angel, Brainiac, Smallvile) spoke about his involvement in 'Dragonball', a live action adaptation of the Weekly Shonen JUMP title by Akira Toriyama (directed and written by James Wong):

"Oh, Dragonball is the coolest television cartoon in the last 50, 000 years. It's got a Shakespearean sense of good and evil. The movie has incredible action scenes with characters with unbelieveable powers. It's going to be really visually exciting."

When his stint on Without a Trace came up Marsters spoke of how the producers were "...miffed that I wasn't available anymore [due to Dragonball], which was both a surprise and kind of a compliment."

Dragonball also stars Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-Fat, Emmy Rossum, Joon Park, Jaime Chung, and Eriko Tamura while being produced by Stephen Chow.

Not really much news bust still cool

Edit : just found this was on superhero hype as well site I used but SHH added

On his official website, Marsters added:
I'm not really allowed to talk about any of the movie details, but I can say that [writer/director] James Wong is obviously a gifted and insightful director! When I got the role I had doubts. The more I live with it I realize that I am going to rock this harder than I have anything in my life – I'm hungry for it.

He sounds so smart.

I saw this picture and thought that Michael Emerson might make a good Vegeta. Think about it.

Actress Emmy Rossum (Poseidon, The Phantom of the Opera, The Day After Tomorrow) has continued to post Blogs in between filming scenes for Dragonball at her official MySpace page. Here's a rundown of the good stuff:

Since the new year I've been back on the set of "Dragonball." In addition to working in Durango, we've been shooting in some pretty remote yet stunning locations. So, I've been litterally "out of range" for a few days at a time. We shot in Mexiquillo, about 2 hours outside of Durango where the landscape is amazing and looks - in places - much like the forests of New England. The dense green trees reminded me of New Hampshire and Maine, and made me feel very at home. The sunrises and sunsets are really spectacularly beautiful.. Mexiquillo is pretty remote, and there weren't any hotels around, so we were actually "camping" in log cabins, all together

I almost want to punch Akira Toryama now...

I know it's not technically his fault, but had he not made that POS manga, we wouldn't have this movie.

Hey , the Manga was awesome as was the anime but not as awesome

Re: Dragonball Z live action !

Do I even need to point out the racism behind having the lead character white and the rest of the cast Asian?

You could argue that it's ok since he's actually an alien....but he looks the same as everyone else. So yeah----racist.

And Marsters as Picollo? HA! I'm lol'ing the most off that. What a horrible miscast. In fact I'd be happy if I never saw him in anything again.

Re: Dragonball Z live action !

Will this movie beat out Super Mario Bros. as worst idea for adapting a property into a big-budget feature? Here in America, probably. I doubt many people will go to see it here in the States (besides rabid fanboys and 11 year olds). Over in Japan...it'll probably gross gazillions.

Who knows, I could be wrong. I still think it'll be a steaming pile of crap (no offense Mole, I just always hated that anime, manga, idea, etc), but it could be at least financially successful. Critically successful? No ****ing way.

It'll bomb like Ellen Degeneras at a GOP dinner. I swear, how did Toriyama even let this go down? He must have seriously pissed away his rights on this one.

What really annoys me most, because of the potential EPIC failure of this movie, not just here but in Japan as well, will really hurt the finance options for Cameron's Battle Angel.

Re: Dragonball Z live action !

You know this could be good (I expect it to be , but that is not important) after all people doubted Transformers. You don't like Dragonball Z then you don't have to watch. No one is forcing you.

But what is wrong with people who DO like it , looking forward to this? I'm not expecting it to be Schindler's List good but so what? no film the last 3-4 years is. I'm just expecting something fun.

Will it be diffrent to original story ect...? Yes. That will discourage some fans but Spider-man 1 + 2 were not exactly like comics , a lot was changed and you enjoyed it.

Also I find it funny looking down on this film. From this site most of all. Most people I know who don't read comics if you say "Oh the new Iron Man film looks good" they reply "eh" as they don't care.

And about the race of Goku , I don't care. Yes I could argue the point of he is from the planet Vegeta not earth so it's ok. But instead I plead the Michael Clarke Duncan/Kingpin defence.

Was it considered "racist" the fact in Daredevil they made the main villain black despite him not been black in comics? Or instead did it give us someone who was right for the part and just happens to be black?

Also James Marsters as Piccolo could work well. Most of Piccolo will be voice and as we saw in Superman doomsday when he played Lex. He can do voice acting well. He could also with the right make-up and cgi ect.. Make a cool piccolo acting wise. Not my first choice but not a bad one either.

Now yes should this suck I'll be disappointed but I don't see it happening. I see it just been fun. What is wrong with a movie that is just fun and entertaining?

But this is just my thoughts

I pointed it out a while ago. I don't like this movie from the moment the rights were bought by Fox

Re: Dragonball Z live action !

The set pictures remind me of the Street Fighter movie.

That alone sends the cold chill of death through my soul.

I totally approve of Marsters as Piccolo. Not that I'd approve of him in much anything else, but still.

Movieland posted a lengthly set report from Tuesdays Tournament filming. Here's a rundown:
-Goku was dressed in gray clothes.
-Chi Chi was in a red dress with black prints.
-Mai was in all black.
-The fight that took place was Mai vs. Chi Chi and the choreography did not require any wires.
-Chi Chi wins because Mai leaves the ring.
-Chi Chi embraces Goku after her win and he says "Great job"
-A scene was filmed where Goku sees a hot dog cart and wants one but can't have one because Chi Chi just one her fight!

Movieland is reporting that actor Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) has joined the cast of Dragonball.

Translated: "We can not say much for the participation of Ernie in the film, only that his character will be an altar boy in a temple, which comes Gokú (Justin Chatwin) and his friends, who must support," says Luis Reyes, representing 20th Century Fox.
