Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

Lying in the gutters:

I sent a joke two page script round to a few friends the other day. Michael Netzer was one, and he decided to take me far too literally by drawing it up. Didn't I get a lovely surprise.

Michael Netzer is a fast, quality, underused, under appreciated artist. Someone could make a lot of money with him on their books.

No on I didn't want a new villain as at first the idea of new villains excited me but after seeing how they did it , I decided NO , they should instead fix villains they had like shocker or Electro or Vulture , theses guys IMO could be A list if they had the chance
"

Just having one of the villains kill MJ out of the blue, with no build up, IMO, especially since it go against somme of their character. shocker for example, is just a theif, not a killer. He doesn't want a murder rap for moral and pratical reason. That just screams of some villain becoming a Mary Sue

True , They could have gone the other route of Divorce like you mentioned. If they actually concentrated on the story and not the fact it was to end the marriage they could pull of great stuff

before when they tried it felt rushed or forced. Instead of looking at the "ending the marriage" as the reason they should look at the story as the reason.

If the story is great it will get new fans based on the work not some ****ty gimmick , Stuff like the webshooters and marriage ending should be things to archive , now it's like the story is just there as a necessity ("it should have a story lets make a random crap one" is their thinking)

You kill Mary Jane in a great and emotional way and keep her dead , It may upset some fans but deaths normally do E.g On Buffy a lot of fans got upset at killing her mother BUT when they got over it.

The way I mentioned makes it so fans think "oh they have been building to this since civil war , This will be memorable"

Yeah memorable as another cliched use of the women in refrigerators plot device:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Refrigerators

Killing off mJ would be the most cliched thing, why wouldn't Peter just kill himself at that point.

I would rather the writers try something new (Divorce) rather than relying on the "women in refrigerators" cliche.

Maybe a cliché but it's still better than magic fixing everything , plus what in comics now days is not a cliché? since it's all been done before

A divorce would been the best and should have been the only option to end the marriage. Seriously how many super heroes are divorced?

Besides the "women in refrigerators" cliche is also considered disrespectfully at this point (which is why Gail Simone coined the term and even started a website about it). It turns female characters into plot devices, for the sake of the male character. Seriously why should female characters suffer just so their male counter parts have something to angst about? That's not very respectfully to the female characters in the first place.

Same thing with male charracters but no one complains about it been a male charracter e.g Captain America , Superman , didn't one of the robin's die? and so on.

I agree Divorce is another way to go , I already said that , I just gave killing her as another option.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

They should have just plain Iced May (if the pun was intended it would be hilariously disgusting), and had Pete send MJ to stay with Aunt Anna (MJ's aunt) out of state until everything had blown over

That's right old school supporting cast usage

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

Dropped.

I gave BND a real shot. I really did. But it sucks. Not OMD levels of suck mind you, but suck nonetheless. McNiven is still great, but his talents are wasted on this moronic story. I can't tell if Slott is being ironic with these names or if he's just an idiot. Either way I have lost all the interest that I had for this series in two quick subpar issues. I won't be wasting 9 bucks a month on this series when I got three times the enjoyment out of a single issue of The Incredible Herc, a funny stopgap series that only exists until Loeb is done ruining the Hulk mythos for all time.

Note to Marvel Editorial: If you're going to screw with the status quo while telling us "It'll be for the best. Trust us." Don't kick off the new stories with Negative Man and his Inner Demons. Lame.

Couldn't agree more (especially with the Incredible Herc part).

Everything i liked about Spiderman went away in one pact with satan. What a shame.

I am seriously digging that series right now. Knowing that it's only temporary hurts my heart.

Thing is I stopped caring about the pact a week or so ago. I took a deep breath, I said my piece, and I let it go. I simply do not care anymore. I was really excited about the talent they'd lined up for this series and I thought they'd make up for the dumb editorial move with a great series. They haven't delivered at all. And I'm not about to buy three mediocre to subpar issues a month. My decision has nothing to do with Spidey's marital status and everything to do with the lack of quality in the story telling.

For months I've heard that Slott was the perfect guy to be writing Spider-Man and I just don't see it. Peter isn't particularly interesting or witty under his pen, so I guess I just don't get what all the hubbub was about.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

i'm dropping the subscription i've had to Amazing Spider-Man since about a year before JMS took over...

That's almost eight years now... But I have no interest in watching them **** all over the spider-man mythos.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

"But with the first issue of 'Brand New Day' (this week's comic book in which Spider-Man returns to single life), our letters very quickly changed to people saying, 'This is fantastic. This is the Spider-Man we remembered. We didn't know what we'd been missing."

I've not read/heard a single person say that, and I run a friggin' message board. At best they've said the same thing I did - horrible idea, good execution.

Are you accusing them of lying to make it sound better? I'M SHOCKED SHOCKED

Re: Amazing Spider-Man series discussion (spoilers)

You know what's the best part of Brand New Day? That Joe Q. was bragging about what a pimp Peter would be in it and he's moved back in with his elderly aunt and has no job. Do you think when his harlots stumble down in the morning, smelling like sex and beer, they'll get made wheatcakes?

I said it. Lots of times.

+1000 Ourchair Points.

For no other reason than because I can.

Aunt May: "Such nice young girls!"

Peter Parker: "What are you talking about, you senile old ****? They're total sluts!"

*beat*

Aunt May: "Such nice young sluts!"

Yes, but not as frequently as females.

And just to be clear, Women In Refrigerators doesn't refer to the death of female characters, but specifically to female characters whose death is mostly executed as a means of character development for the male.

When was the last time you saw a male character die as a means to 'develop' a female character?
