Ultimate Colossus

Alright, since people refuse to touch it in the other sexuality thread... do we know if this is actually going to stick, seeing as how Millar has moved on from UXM? Like I told the other thread, Chuck Austen says Nightcrawler has two penises, but that doesn't mean any other writer is going to keep true to what he claims.

he was joking about the 2 penis thing.....

I think Colossus is the coolest character of the UXM being gay or whatever. Even dont being gay i think he is the one that most looks like me. He is the one that i most sympatize.

ok no funny questions ice

Colossus' character is so vague... I don't get where you're coming from Quicksilver. I mean, this is my opinion of course, but I don't think any of the writers, save Vaughan, have given Colossus all that much attention.

I think it's going to stick, personally. I mean, both Bendis and Vaughan carried it on... It'd take someone like Singer to come in and change that. ;)

I'm still not seeing Colossus as being some big gay spokesperson or anything. He blushes when hit on, and turns down a slut. The former means he, like most non-homophobic males, didn't know exactly how to respond, while the latter means he has taste. Neither means anyone past Millar has kept him gay.

I do understand where your coming from. He hasn't been given the screen time he deserves and there's been no real character developement beyond the innuendo about his sexuality. Its disappointing to see him so ignored but I'm holding out hopes for some developement soon

I definitely think that Colossus is gay under Vaughan... Have you read the most recent issue? I don't think there's any escaping it after that one; Dazz brought it up and frankly at that!

I think that they (the other writers) didn't make him officially gay. They were probably toying with the idea. Vaughan definitely gets the credit for outing him. The last issue was ridiculous.

this is so gay...

dude, hes gay, but they arent trying to make a big deal out of it. The important thing is his character and how he contributes to the team, not his sexual orientation.... sure there will be side stories reflecting him being gay, but thats not the theme of the book and it should never be. Being gay is just a little tag placed on characters to keep up with the times and be a little modern with the superhero thing. That is all it will ever be unless he (or any other gay characters) get their own series.

Captain, why you flippin? I don't care that he's gay nor do I think it's a big deal??

Well, really, I do think that Vaughan has done a good job at balancing out Colossus' character with inuendos and actually having contributions to other characterizations, however, I do find, as a whole, Colossus has been treated as sort of a joke character. That's something I can't appreciate.

The most recent issue is #56. In it, Colossus shows more careness for Longshot, than Ali, his own teammate. Then Ali asks NC if Colossus "plays for the other team". And kept incinuating that Colossus is gay.

He is definately gay. If they were to change all the stuff leading up to this, by having him get with Kitty or something.... that'd just be bad writing.

No, that'd be Colosuss having a sudden change of preference for the sake of one relationship. Just because a character has been consistently suggested as gay, doesn't mean he can't do a full 180 on us and develop some surprisingly heterosexual feelings, in the same way that many heterosexuals just pull a shocker and go gay or lesbian for no apparently foreshadowed reason.

As queer theorist Judith Butler put it, gender and sexuality are fluid states of being that change as you change. Or to put it simply, you are only gay at any given moment insofar as you have a preference for the same sex at that moment, but that CAN change. Or rather, labels such as gay, straight, butch and femme exist only to define TEMPORAL states of sexuality and gender and how wo perform those traits.

Not that I don't like Colossus the way he is. I just don't believe that we can attribute a hypothetical change of preference as bad writing. I mean, we don't blame our friends as having badly written lives when they suddenly change sexual preferences do we?

On a similar note, just cause Claremont didn't get to do what he wanted to do, doesn't mean whoever followed him was a bad writer. It's just flawed editorial policy, in that Claremont's run was truncated prematurely and he wasn't able to finish the threads he left behind and as such, some of those leftover threads became mismanaged by those who followed him.

Why does everyone always try to bring intelligence into these fights... honestly there's no way anything or anyone in the marvel universe can stop the hulk... I believe that's what was intended when he was first created and that's how it goes...

Seriously, I doubt Stan Lee sat down and thought of Hulk as the MOST POWERFUL THING IN DA MARVEL UNIVERSE, rather than an actual amalgam of Hyde/Frankenstein archetypes. I mean really, conceiving of a character for the sole sake of his power level is like building a nuclear weapon as a "deterrent for war".

Of course, Superman was conceived on the basis of his power-level, but only in terms of how he relates contextually with the common un-Supermen of his Metropolis, in that he really is meant to be more of an Ubermensch than anything else. (Damn, just when I swore I wouldn't insert a foreign-language word this week).

HULK EATS BRAIN OF PUNY POSTING GUY! HULK IS STRONGEST THERE IS!! Um, amd HULK STRAIGHT!!!
