I was having an argument the other day with a couple friends and my roommate who knows just about as much as i do on comics. There's this other guy who thinks he knows alot just because he plays clix. ****ing game.
Regardless the conversation boils down to me dissing everything Liefeld has ever done and saying that I would never promote anything Liefeld. Then my roommate brought up the fact that he created Deadpool. I had my gun that day because I had hospital duty. I came so close.
I bought the first two volumes and I could not have been less interested in the big angry dude and his annoying blond sidekick. For years when I complained about BMB's writing people said, "You should check out Powers. It's so good."
I didn't care for Powers at all. The art was OK but seemed completely inappropriate for the type of story Bendis was telling. Which is to say, a crappy one.

Kirkman, Bendis, Millar, Brubaker, and one Lindeloff title... Yep, not surprised.
10 - Umbrella Academy - Who would've ever guessed that a guy from My Chemical Romance could bring us some pure awesometastic adventuring in the likes of Grant Morrison or Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Did I just compare this to LXG? Yes I did. While the first story is already collected in TPB, Way's new story ( Umbrella Academy : Dallas ) has just released its first issue and picks up where the last volume left off. Seriously folks. I wholeheartedly endorse this comic!
9 - Capt America - You kill off the main character...keep the story going for over a year without him...then have the title character come back---AND NOT AS THE ORIGINAL...and to top it off, the replacement is even more awesome than the original! How does Brubaker ****ing do it?!?!?! Seriously, Bucky is a better Cap than Steve Rogers. Super-heroism, international espionage, thriller/mystery, and naked Black Widow. This should be in everyone's Top 10!
8 - Thor - I stand by my previous statements, but I feel compelled to reiterate that Coipel's art is off the ****ing chain!!!! I just wish that JMS would hurry up and give Thor something to hit already. So lack of god-like action and slow release dates keep this book from ranking higher.
7 - Walking Dead - The last arc rocked me like a hurricane. And now Kirkman has slowed it down a bit and is beginning to build steam again. Aside from a good balance of suspense, comedy, action, and REAL character development...this book has been shipping on-time like crazy! In fact it seems like the last issue just came out like 2 weeks ago and now another issue is coming next week. The downside? Reading in single-issue format is just too quick a read.
6 - Daredevil - Holy **** does it suck to be Matt Murdock. Apparently Brubaker's father must've loved Daredevil a lot, and his love for "The Man Without Fear" was so great that it Bru's mother couldn't take being #2 anymore and she left Bru and his father, forcing them to live off fried baloney sandwiches and pork-n-beans. I say this because Brubaker has been ****ing Matt Murdock's life up like Bru is out for revenge! Seriously Bru.....ease up bro.
5 - Fantastic 4 - THIS is Fantastic 4 as it should be. I'm talking "over-the-top, global or timeline threatening, we fight giant spacemen" F4! While Millar, might be sparce with the dialogue...his flamboyant imagination is well put to use her with Marvel's First Family. If you loved his run on Ultimate Fantastic 4...then you'll love his 616 run. I know I am! Now for a classic Doom battle.
4 - Iron Fist - Kung fu billionaire. And this book just got 73x more awesome by having Foreman as the main artist! Seriously...I have not read a single bad issue on this book (including one-shots and annuals) and we're now up #20. And judging by the ending of the last issue,
we now know that Danny will die and he and Misty Knight will have a son together
. I can't wait to see how this plays out.
3 - Fables - Consistently solid. I have no bad words to say about this book.
2 - Sword - Apparently I am the only one reading this. Fine! More amazingness for me. The Luna Bros. have created an engrossing story of revenge spanning centuries between an immortal family and the daughter of their tormentor. The art, while simplistic by design, is absolutely stunning and can be intricately detailed. Meanwhile the story itself is worthy of any kind of screen adaptation. I suggest you all find the first TPB of this great story and get caught up quick!
1 - Scalped - You like HBO's The Wire or Sopranos? Or maybe FX's The Shield or Damages? Perhaps even Showtime's Dexter? If yes…then you NEED to be reading Scalped. Perhaps you might've missed those TV gems but might've caught Jason Aaron's Black Panther: Secret Invasion tie-in? Or maybe his Ghost Rider? How about his Wolverine arc? Either way…Jason Aaron is this year's hottest artist. Pick up Scalped and find out why this is my new Punisher MAX replacement.
NEW STANDINGS
10 - Captain America - Brubaker is crafting a massive and epic tale of heroism, espionage and redemption the likes of which any writer who takes up the book after he's done is gonna have a doozy of time matching. Bucky is a new and better Cap than Steve. Yeah I said it. It's a new Cap for a new era. One who is ready to match the ruthless tactics of today's villains. I just wish he'd get Bucky invloved with more current problems like Osborn's Dark Reign rather than deal with this old WWII baggage.
9 - Incredible Hercules - By Zeus's Great White Beard! This book is awesome. The tales of an immortal, booze-swilling, skirt-chasing demigod and his brilliant teenage genius sidekick as they travel across the country. I know many people may not be too thrilled by that idea....and even after reading his World War Hulk or Secret Invasion arcs---but read Love and War and tell me you're not in love with this book........and the idea of some sweet Gorgon lovemaking.
8 - New Avengers - It's hard to have a Top 10 list and not have New Avengers in it. It's just a solid blockbuster comic. It is the comic equivelant of Pirates of the Carribean or Transformers. You can't expect greatness.....just a good time.
7 - The Immortal Iron Fist - You cannot go wrong with this book. Period. You like witty dialouge? You like kung-fu action? Then this is your book!
6 - The Umbrella Academy - This book is crazy. Like Frank Miller's All-Star Batman slept with Doom Patrol and had a baby. And that baby slept with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. And then that baby got hopped up on sugar and LSD and then had a torrid affair with Nextwave and then Nextwave had a baby. And that baby was this book. It's that ****ing crazy! Don't believe me? Check out the Umbrella Academy thread. I only leave you with these following words: Hazel and Cha-Cha........a monkey dressed as Marilyn Monroe........a 10 year old killing machine who is bossed by a goldfish.
5 - Fantastic 4 - Millar's run is fantastically fun. No way around it. It's hard to read this and not imagine anyone writing Marvel's first family any other way.
4 - Invincible Iron Man - Tony Stark is public enemy #1 and on the run from Norman Osborn's global security force. And Tony is also without Extremis. So he's having to outsmart everyone the old fashioned way.....and doing an outstanding job! Fraction is giving us one hell of a story. A must for any Iron Man fan.
3 - Secret Warriors - Jonathan Hickman writing Nick Fury. **** you....that's all you get! That's all you should need to get this book. Ok fine....you want more?
S.H.I.E.L.D is a subdivision of Hydra and always has been. Fury's been working for Hydra the entire time her's been at this. Imagine what he'll do now....
2 - Sword - What I said above in the Old Standings. And Proj is reading this and he loves it. And he doesn't like anything except for kittens and Grant Morrison. So what does that say about this book?
1 - Scalped - I'll say it again: You like HBO's The Wire or Sopranos? Or maybe FX's The Shield or Damages? Perhaps even Showtime's Dexter? If yes…then you NEED to be reading Scalped. Perhaps you might've missed those TV gems but might've caught Jason Aaron's Black Panther: Secret Invasion tie-in? Or maybe his Ghost Rider? How about his Wolverine arc? Either way…Jason Aaron is this year's hottest artist. Pick up Scalped and find out why this is my new Punisher MAX replacement.
3 of my favourites (Cap, Iron Fist and UA) are on your list, and you explained them in a way with which I wholeheartedly agree...which makes me think I should start getting Scalped.
I'll give it 'free' try when I have time, and if I like it, go back and start buying trades... all on the endorsements from this site - particularly yours.
(Why doesn't Joe Q realize that this is how comic followings happen??)
10 - Superman Titles
Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, James Robinson, & Sterling Gates are really creating a well connected but not confusing Superman universe. I am enjoying it from Superman on New Krypton, to Supergirl hunting her father's killer, to Flamebird & Nightwing, and the the adventures of Mon-El.
9 - Scapled
This is a hard series to read monthly, it best works in large doses, but I love the drama of the reservation every month.
8 - Northlanders
I like how the book is set during different periods about different characters so it doesn't get stale. Who doesn't want to read about Vikings?
7 - Wolverine
This will probably disappear after the last issue of Old Man Logan comes out, but I enjoyed it a lot more then the last thing this team did, Civil War
6 - Flash Rebirth
I bet it will be even better when looked back on like Green Lantern - Rebirth.
5 - Batman & Robin
Only two issues out and I am already loving the new duo. Also Quietly's art is the some of the best I ever seen of his.
4 - Detective Comics
I usually don't add a new series to this until it had at least two issues. This had one from the new team, but I was so impressed I had to. Strong writing, amazing art, and a great character.
3 - Thor
I'm scared about who they get to replace JMS.
2 - Daredevil
It's amazing how consist this title has been for years.
1 - Green Lantern / Green Lantern Corps
In Blackest Night...need I say more?
