NEW LIST

10. Fables
Honestly, a month or two ago, Fables wouldn't have made the list. The big crossover was some of the worst work i've seen on the series, and I'm glad that it's over and done with. Mr. Dark is a fascinating guy, though... and we're finally focusing on the witches. The idea of bringing Ozma into Fables is great, and having Frau Totenkinder regain her youth is hell of exciting. Once again, I can't wait to see what's next.

9. Invincible
A recent read-through of my trades compelled me to start picking this up monthly. Cool things are starting to happen, and I am waiting eagerly month to month to see what'll happen in Mark Grayson's life.

8. The Flash: Rebirth
I honestly didn't think much of this at first, but every new issue has gotten me more excited for Barry Allen's return. Mostly, I can't wait until this finishes and we get the Johns/Manupal ongoing series.

7. Superman: The World of New Krypton
It's no surprise that the core Superman book to make the list is the one actually starring Superman. I'm loving the exploration of this new world and Kal-El's place in it. Zod is a fascinating character, and I'd love it if he's actually starting to respect Kal rather than just setting up his downfall.

6. Invincible Iron Man
I don't think i've ever been so unsure of what could possibly work all of this out... I hope Tony works through his mental deficiency on his own though... It would be really cheap to have them simply Deus Ex Machina it away.

5. Ultimate Spider-Man
I don't get why some people are hating on the reboot... I think its the best work I've seen on the series since the beginning. This SHOULD be a high school drama, and Bendis does really well at writing that. The emotional moments have always been better than the action-packed issues. And while I miss Immonen, I'm digging the new artist.

4. Detective Comics
The best art currently in comics. The story has been a bit up and down, but generally, I'm loving it. I can't wait to see the origin story that starts with next month's issue.

3. Batman and Robin
Morrison's best work yet on the Bat-Universe... Hopefully it can sustain the awesome that came from those first three issues. Honestly, i'd be fine if Bruce never came back.

2. Adventure Comics
I am more than a little peeved that this amazing book is only going to last six issues in its current state... But mostly, I'm head over heels in love with this series.

1. Green Lantern/Blackest Night
The prologue to Blackest Night with The Black Hand's origin has my vote for best single issue of the year. Can't wait to see how all of this turns out, and furthermore how the series can go on from here.

Biggest Top Ten Potential: Superman: Secret Origin

A lot of my traditional favourite comics are in transitional periods at the moment... I hope they continue to be good otherwise I'll have to find new ones.

I don't buy that many monthlies, so I'll just do a top 5.

5. Action Comics
4. Detective Comics
3. The World of New Krypton
2. Invincible
1. Batman and Robin

Superman: Secret Origin could beat Action Comics off the list. I got the first issue of the USM reboot but it's still in its plastic packaging and I haven't even read it yet. I don't even think I'm bothered selling it, because I don't think I'd get that much for it (how many Spider-Man Issue Ones have there been in the last twenty years?).

The only comics I buy monthly are
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man
Ultimate Comics Avengers
Ultimate Comics Armor Wars
Amazing Spider-Man
Flash: Rebrith
and starting today
Spider-Man: The Clone Saga (but I haven't picked issue #1 up yet)

I'm also trade waiting
New Avengers (which i miss buying in single issues, but i had to cut back)
Green Lantern (which is a long wait)
Green Lantern Corps
and Captain America

So I guess out of those 10 it goes

10. Spider-Man the Clone Saga (just b/c i have no idea what to expect)
9. Green Lantern Corps
8. Flash Rebirth
7. Ultimate Armor Wars
6. Green Lantern
5. Ultimate Avengers
4. Captain America
3. Ultimate Spider-Man
2. New Avengers
1. Amazing Spider-Man (mostly b/c it comes 3 times a month. I was turned off by the idea at first, but i love getting the whole story in a month or two)

Brother, you need to diversify.

Brother, you need to diversify.

Seriously, for the love of God read The Incredible Hercules and Agents of Atlas stat!

hey, i know what I like and I'm not interested in spending tonnes of money every month on comics. And I don't do torrents. I considered torrents for some old back issues that haven't been collected in trade, but I decided against it.

I only started reading DC about a year ago. Before that it was all Marvel.

And I'm beginning to cut back on single issues in general. I used to get 12 a month, but then i realized how impractical that was. I'd rather wait for it to come out in TPB so i can put it on a shelf and read it again later instead of sticking it in along box, bagged and boarded and having it take up room in a closet somewhere. Although DC makes it a LONG wait.

All that to say, thanks but no thanks.
:)

Neither of those are DC and both of them are worth checking out.

Just making sure. You seemed a little hung up on that.

I was just saying I tend not to stray to far from what I know I'm going to like. I'm kind of OCD about collections. I'm not going to pick up a couple of issues of a comic just to see what it's like. Generally adding or dropping a title is a big decision.

I know, I have issues. (pun intended)

Green Lantern/Blackest Night/Green Lantern Corps.
Technically three comics but they're all telling the same story... and it's awesome.

Detective Comics
Greg Rucka. JH Williams III. Batwoman. Perfect. The current arc is flawless. Rucka's Stumptown also had a great start.

Invincible Iron Man
Matt Fraction is writing a fantastic Iron Man story while reinventing Tony Stark at the same time.

Fables
It kind of lost steam during the crossover but now it's back. Frau Totenkinder is one scary mother****er.

The Walking Dead
So good. Kirkman's best.

Captain America: Reborn
I wasn't sure about this when it first started but I'm loving it now. Brubaker is telling a great superhero story and Hitch's art is superb.

Batman and Robin
Grant Morrison telling the fun and exciting tales of the new Batman and Robin. The Tan art hurt the current arc but with Stewart and Irving coming up in later arcs, it looks like it's going to pick back up again.

Secret Warriors/Fantastic Four
I can't decide which. Both are great. I understand the hype for Hickman now.

Ultimate Avengers
My guilty pleasure. The only Mark Millar comic being published (well, it's the only one on time) at the moment. Kind of dumb compared to The Ultimates but still very entertaining. I'm just glad I'm getting Millar writing in this universe again.

Daredevil
Marvel's most consistent character/title... Brubaker left with a bang and Diggle's managing to keep it good. I'm looking forward to what happens next.

Green Lantern/Blackest Night
Captain America Reborn
Captain America
Fantastic 4
Invincible Iron Man
Daredevil
Spider-Woman (mostly for the art)
Secret Warriors
Punisher MAX (I think I'm a few issues behind on this)
New Avengers

Chew (If you are not reading this, you're missing something special!)
Criminal (see above! Best deal for $3.99 out there)
Invincible Iron Man
Incredible Hercules (I'd pay solely for the Agents of Atlas 6-8 page backup!)
Guardians of the Galaxy (Exceptional team book!)
Nova
Invincible
Walking Dead

10th spot - my 'hiatus' books... Immortal Iron Fist, Umbrella Academy (come back soon!)

The Unwritten - A really clever, postmodern work of meta-fiction. I'm not caught up, but I've loved everything I've read so far.

Invincible Iron Man - My thanks to DSF for turning me onto this one. Iron Man's been so poorly utilized for the past few years...writing him as an effectual fascist was sort of interesting at times, but Tony Stark is the James Bond of the Marvel universe. Cool toys, disposable women and that undefinable aura and coolness that Tony emits when he's written properly. Fraction gets all of this right and takes it even father, giving the character depth again. And I'd argue that "World's Most wanted" was the best Dark Reign storyline.

Batman and Robin- Really, this just encompasses all of Grant Morrison's work at DC. The insane, interconnected plotline that's reinvented the entire DCU is continually being brought to life in new, exciting ways every issue in this book. Plus, all of that stuff about the Dick/Damien dynamic being a brilliant bit of characterization.

Ex Machina - It never comes out on time, and the last couple of issues have been sort of weak, but it seamlessly and nonlinearly fuses a West Wing-esque political drama with straightfaced superhero stuff. It's generally a lot of fun, and you find yourself wishing that every politician could just be Mitchell Hundred. Plus, Tony Harris (of Starman fame) is a fabulous artist.

Joe The Barbarian - Grant Morrison's mad imagination takes another spot. It's a really cool blend of fantasy tropes that's self aware, fun and intelligent all at once. And again; fantastic art.

Incredible Hercules - The most consistently fun comic on the stands. And there's something to be said for that. There's very little unique praise I have for this book, since everyone else is acceptably verbal about their love for it. Also, as a Classics geek, I'm always surprised at how accurate some of the mythology is.

Northlanders, Detective Comics, Daredevil, Fables, some of the New Krypton stuff and Green Lantern are all honorable mentions, but not really on the same tier as the books I listed above.

Runners-Up: Red Robin, Invincible, Choker, American Vampire (That'll be up here soon enough), Fables, Supergirl.

10. Secret Warriors
This book is fantastic... Bringing out everything that makes Nick Fury one of the best characters in the Marvel Universe and all the weirdness that comes with him. And Phobos... I'm particularly excited to see his reaction to what went on in Siege.

9. Uncanny X-Men
Dang this book. I am going to be so ****ing disappointed when some lame writer takes Magneto and turns him back into a mindless villain. Utopia has been the most interesting thing to happen to the X-Men since Morrison left Marvel.

8. Secret Six
Finally caught up with this book and I'm kicking myself for having not read this monthly for years.

7. The Walking Dead
Things are heading in a brilliant direction that I wasn't expecting. I want things to work out for the best, and love the characters enough to make it hurt to know that some catastrophe is inevitably going to happen down the line.

6. Green Lantern
Heck Yes, GL. Blackest Night and GLC should be considered a part of it, but Green Lantern remains better than the bigger series or even its monthly brother.

5. Ultimate Comics Spider-Man
Still don't understand any of the hate directed at this book. The best I think I have EVER seen the title. It's headed down a path further and further away from 616, and that's JUST what the title needed.

4. The Unwritten
Wow. Just wow. This is going to go down as one of the best Vertigo has ever offered. The story idea is so well conceived that my response is identical to all the writer reviews of the book: I wish I had thought of it first.

3. Fantastic Four
Hell yes. I've never seen the F4 this solid... I mean, seriously... It's as weird and wonderful as the concept should allow for. Sometimes I almost wish that the whole series belonged to Valeria, a four year old supergenius. That's how solid every part of this book is.

2. Batman and Robin
Some of the most interesting Batman stories that I've seen told since I started reading comics. I'm eager to see The Return of Bruce Wayne, but the strength of Dick/Damien makes me a little wary of any return to the status quo. But i trust Morrison.

1. Invincible Iron Man
Tony Stark has gone from B-List hero to the real star of the Marvel Universe and there just simply isn't a monthly right now that I'm more eager to pick up than this one.

Honorable mention: Ultimate X, American vampire. To soon to form a proper opinion on these. Liked their first issues, though.

10: Umbrella Academy
Barely worth mentioning because nothing is getting released right now. But I needed to put something here and I do still love this series.

9: The Walking Dead
We've seen them traveling through zombie infested wasteland ALOT since the beginning of this series. I've seen enough of it. But this has recently taken an interesting turn again. I loved their time at the prison, so I'm hoping this will be just as good. I still dont like the art though.

8: Chew
I'm still very much on the fence about this series. The humor isn't really my cup of tea, but the concept is interesting. I'm still rooting for Savoy more than I am for Chu. I hope he comes back soon.

7: Fables
I absolutely hate Jack of fables and the regular title is actually suffering from it. I stopped reading during the great fables crossover (which was terrible IMHO), but have recently caught up again. It's still able to interest me.

6: Invincible
I think this series has gone over its peak. I used to like the subtle continuation hints. Like mark throwing up garbage in issue one and it landing in Europe a couple of issues/panels later. Little gags like those were what reeled me in and we've been getting those less and less. To the point where I can't remember the last time they did something like that. Also, teen pregnancy is a silly plot device. I dont like it.

5: Scalped
I dont have much to say about this one. I didn't think I would like this, but I've enjoyed every single issue so far. I have no idea if this is a honest depiction of life on an indian reserve (never even been near one), but it feels like it could be. Love it.

4: Proof
Mythology? Count me in! Mythology/history? **** yes. Proofs backstory nearly brought me to tears. The art needs some getting used to, but when you do it's a little diamond in the rough.

3: Hellboy
It's still good. Loved the crooked man. Didn't care as much for the Wild Hunt, but it can't all be golden. B.P.R.D feels to global right now. I liked it better when they would just stop individual monsters instead of fighting off an invasion. It's just not what I want this comic to do. Still love the Hellboy title, and most of the minis/oneshots in this universe.

2: Locke&Key
Did I mention I love teenage drama? I love it even more with a dash of the supernatural. This series caters to most of my interests. It's one of those series where I just can't wait till the next issue.

1: Ultimate comics: Spider-man
Teenage drama!!! I was sad when spidey:heart:mj got cancelled, but I got it back with this series! Yaaay! It was USM that got me into comics and I'm glad I've stuck around this long.

10 -Astonishing X-Men
When it bothers to come out. It would be so much better if it would come out.

9 - Batman - Streets Of Gotham
Dini turned Hush into a great villain. Fantastic art and writing with a great backup featuring Kate Spencer as the new Gotham DA.

8 - Fables
Fables was slow for awhile but it has picked up steam again. No matter what up and downs it has, when it is over the whole thing will be viewed as an epic. Also the Cinderella mini is awesome.

7 - Thor
Switching creative team midstory seemed odd, but it didn't hurt my enjoyment of the series.

6 - Secret Warriors
I estimate this to skyrocket in the next year. This is the Fury I want to read and I am loving the villains. I am glad they brought back The Gorgon.

5 - Daredevil
3 creative teams and this book still kicks ass.

4 - Invincible Iron Man
This book is amazing. It is the best use of Dark Reign and returned Tony Stark to his roots.

3 - Detective Comics
Batwoman is probably one of the best characters in the last few years. With starting art from comic god JH Williams and then Jock, combining the best writing of Rucka's career, you have gold.

2 - Batman & Robin
Unsure when you heard about Dick/Damien as the new Batman & Robin. This book sold the idea and I actually am unsure if I want Bruce back.

1 - Green Lantern/Blackest Night/Green Lantern Corps
Look at all the pretty colors.

I've been really enjoying THE BELLYBUTTONS, THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY, CRIMINAL, I KILL GIANTS, and GARTH ENNIS' WAR STORIES. Hickman's FANTASTIC FOUR is lots of fun too. I've been picking up the few holes in my TINTIN and ASTERIX collections which are terrific, and I've just started to pick up LUCKY LUKE. CLIFTON's also a fun, light-hearted read.
