The Music Thread : It's So Easy To Fly Through A Window

I'll probably get alot of flack for this, but I've never liked the Beach Boys.

I never disliked them, but they were always just another group to me. I read some comments on the song "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulders)" and listened to it (it's on Pet Sounds, which I've had for a long time) and it really is beautiful, and I just kept listening to Pet Sounds over and over.

"God Only Knows" is my favorite song ever. Paul McCartney has said that he can't listen to it and not cry - stuff like that gives me a different kind of appreciation for songs like that.

Pet Sounds is one of those albums that's just a classic. Not that Rolling Stone is the be all and end all of music opinion, but they ranked it the second greatest album of all time (Sgt. Pepper being number 1)

So did LCD Soundsystem, and Gorillaz. I'm really mad about the Gorillaz one.

I read that the Gorillaz report was false.

I'm a huge Beatles fan...but Sgt. Pepper is so overrated. It's not even The Beatles' best album (not even top 5), let alone the best of all time.

I love Sgt. Peppers, but I prefer Hard Day's Night and White Album with Abbey Road being my absolute favorite. The way the songs sync just really get me on this happy high. One of my favorite Beatles songs is their rendition of Sure to Fall, which still does no justice to Perkins' version.

Sgt. Pepper is my second favourite Beatles album after Abbey Road.

I can understand not thinking it's their best, but not in their top five? really? which albums do you like better than it?

1. Abbey Road
2. The White Album
3. Revolver
4. Rubber Soul
5. Let It Be
6. Please Please Me
7. Sgt. Pepper

If Magical Mystery Tour was a real album it would probably come in above Let It Be, but even though it's canon now it's not a true Beatles album.

I like Sgt. Pepper - it's just not as good as a lot (most?) of their other work.

And it bugs me when people call it a concept album.

I think with the exception of please please me, there are songs on each of those albums that i like a lot better than anything on Sgt Pepper, but I like the album Sgt Pepper as a whole better than any of the other ones (except Abbey Road, which as i've mentioned is my favourite). This is especially true for the White Album. I have a love hate relationship with it. There are so many amazing songs on it but also a handful that I can't stand - Revolution 9 being the worst.

I agree that Sgt Pepper isn't a concept album. It's sort of the very beginnings of a concept that was abandoned.

Revolution 9 being the worst.

Before I got the remastered box set I didn't even have Revolution 9 in my iTunes library. It's ridiculous, banal, meaningless, unlistenable garbage.

I think what puts me off about Sgt. Pepper is that it's just Paul trying to be artsy or whatever. John was on drugs and laying low and Paul took over after Brian Epstein died, and he just kind of...did stuff. It's sort of like the Magical Mystery Tour movie, which is abysmal. The difference is that even when he is falling over himself trying to be avant garde, they still made amazing music.

My Top 5 Beatles albums in no particular order: Abbey Road, A Hard Day's Night, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Revolver, The White Album. Sgt. Pepper's has A Day In The Life! Revolver might be the best album of all time.

I listened to "God Only Knows" on repeat while I wandered around Disneyland.

Re: the earlier discussion about hip-hop.

2010 was actually the best year hip-hop has had in a long time. Tons of great albums and mixtapes. Kanye, Big Boi, Ghostface, Curren$y, Jay Electronica, Das Racist, Big K.R.I.T.

And of course ODD FUTURE WOLF GANG KILL THEM ALL, who are the most exciting thing in hip-hop right now and are about to take over the world and scare all the white people to death:

Radiohead have brought forward the digital release of their new album "The King Of Limbs" by 24 hours with the album now being sent to those who pre-ordered it earlier this week. It is also available for new orders through www.radiohead.com at a fixed price of £6. A special edition is also available.

With everything ready on their website, the band decided to bring forward the release by a day rather than wait until the planned date of Saturday, Feb 19 to deliver the music.
