This is awesome:

Apple Developing a Home Media Server?

9to5Mac reports that Apple has been working on a home media server to access your iTunes and other files anywhere you have internet access. The site compares it to HP's just updated Media Smart Server which offers a centralized location for backup, storage and file delivery to your computers locally as well as remotely:

Your music, photos, videos and other media are part of your life -- but they're scattered over multiple computers, disk drives, CDs, DVDs, and MP3 players.... Macs and iPods too. The HP MediaSmart Server centralizes all your files, from all your home computers, in one place so you can grab them anywhere you have an internet connection and share how you want.
Apple's take on the system would reportedly expand out Time Capsule's functionality from being a single drive backup system into a more robust multi-drive backup server. In addition, tie ins would be made to Apple's MobileMe services to deliver access to your files and media from anywhere on the internet.

9to5mac suggests that media could also be shared to your iPhone and iPod touch, providing full access to your media while mobile. The device could also serve media files to other computers at home as well as to your Apple TV.

This is exactly what I want. Nice!

Woohoo, just ahead of Mac Expo this morning/afternoon...

- CNet reports that Apple has cut deals that will allow iTunes to offer copy-protection free (DRM free) songs from the largest music labels. In exchange, Apple is said to offer more flexible pricing.

Under the terms of the deal, song prices will be broken down into three categories--older songs from the catalog, midline songs (newer songs that aren't big hits), and current hits--said one of the sources.
Beyond this, Apple has also come to an agreement to deliver over-the-air downloads which will allow iPhone users to download music directly on their iPhones. These announcements could be announced at Macworld.

Sounds similar to Amazon - they basically have 3 price points for individual songs: .79, .89, & .99.

I still prefer Amazon because I can buy from the UC Store and their are MP3s, but this is still good news. I can't help but wonder how long it will last though, knowing that not long ago the idiots at the record labels wanted to charge as much as $1.29 per song.

Yeah, the MPAA/NBC wanted to charge up to $5.99 an episode for TV shows, and $24.95 for new movies.

I find it so hilarious the notion that people would go along with that. No one is paying the $1.99/9.99 NOW; what makes them think they would spend MORE for DRM-locked more-of-the-same?

shhhh... they panic when someone mentions common sense...

okay, Macworld, so far:

iLIfe '09 (yay, i guess, I don't use it)

17" MacBook Pro

2.66GHz, 4GB RAM (max 8GB), 320GB hard drive (optional 256GB SSD) and an 8 HOUR battery.... it starts shipping at the end of this month.

iTunes:

new pricing, from $.69 to $1.29
100% DRM free music by the end of Q1 (march) 2009 (ho snap, checked iTunes Plus, 50 out of my 77 purchases are now able to be DRM free)
FINALLY the ability to access the iTunes store on your iPhone via 3G

No new Mini or Media Server, but this is why Apple's leaving the trade shows, so they can release without the need to stick to the trade show schedule.

Tempting, but $2799 is too steep. It's a good computer for the money, just too much money.

Hilarious.

Well, in my opinion, 17" is FAR too large for a laptop. With that said, the price goes along with the fact that instead of it being a traditional notebook, the 17" MBP (and other 17+" notebooks) are designed to be mobile desktops. $3000 is pretty standard for that level of notebook, a remotely specced AlienWare is $3400, Dell's is well... all they have is the Covet for $3500 (but it's got a much slower FSB, but it has a QuadCore).

Yeah, I agree. If I had the money to spend I would have no problem doing it; like I said it's not a matter of being a rip-off. I've got a year or so left on the warranty of my Macbook Pro, and after that I will probably get another 15.4".

The $50 extra for the matte screen is interesting. Apple doesn't generally nickel and dime for stuff like that - that's kind of petty.

Honestly, I think it was them catering to the whiners on the message boards, I can see the matte option being added to the 15" models here in the near future.

So...yeah, got my check from my parents' home owners' insurance, after dad spilled chili on my unibody MacBook. After discussing everything with mom, and a couple of my graphic design professors, I think I'm going to get a MacBook Pro and a Cinema Display. Going to do this to replace my Late 06 iMac.

Then after graduation, I'm pondering supplementing my MBP with a MacPro.

Hmmm...I think I'll have chili tonight.

I just downloaded the Safari 4 beta and it's pretty awesome. It is REALLY fast and the scrolling is very smooth.

I figured out how to make a custom Top Sites screen.

1. hit the edit button on the Top Sites page.

2. Open a new window, load the page you want to add in the new window.

3. Highlight the URL and drag it to the Top Sites page on the original window.

4. Repeat

I had told Skotti and some others last night that I, Ice, have decided to get a macbook.

No, this is no joke.

I am planning to get the 120 GB 13.3" this summer as that's when I'll be able to afford to buy it. But I will get it.
