The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Loves Crappy Variant Covers

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

I'd buy in trades if marvel's trade department hadn't gone insane

time was that it took about three months for a trade to come out after the release of the final issue in an arc, but now everything get's Premiere HC's and either takes 9 months to come out, or it never actually makes it to trade and your stuck with the premiere

I should start downloading

They do this with Iron Fist, it's pissing me off.

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

I actually like the Premiere Hardcovers. They look nicer on my bookshelf and I don't mind paying a few dollars more for a higher quality book.

I don't like the spine trade-dress. It throws off the whole balance of the rest of the shelf.

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

I was doing research in my school's library the other day and I got off an elevator on the fourth floor and walked to the first shelf I saw to look at the call numbers and get a frame of reference for what I was looking for. What was on that shelf? Comics. Trades and hardcovers. A whole row of them. This is pretty great. I'm looking forward to being able to read books that I otherwise don't have the money to/don't want to buy. (They had nearly every volume of Fables in hardcover and those big hardcover Neal Adams Batman books that I was mad I couldn't afford.)

Huh, I'm kinda surprised that a school library would have all of those Fables trades (what with that crazy Goldilocks). Still, that's awesome.

I hate this VERY much.

And sure E's got a point. Hardcovers are pretty, nice to have on your shelf and have a wonderful heft to them.

But some of us use Philippinoe pesoses that stand no chance to your Almighty dollars.

Very true.

If you can afford to buy nothing but hardcovers than you obviously have too much money and should give some of it to me.

(I believe this is one of the main principles of Obama's tax plan.)

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

I spent like $50 catching up on all the Ultimate books I've missed the last three months (except Squadron Supreme 3-4), and from what I've read so far. . . this was an unwise choice. I read Ultimates 3 5, Ultimate X-Men 97, Ultimate Fantastic Four 57, Ultimate Origins 4-5 and Ultimate Spider-Man 125 and most of them were so bad my brain wanted to jump out of my eyes.

Just awful.

That's why I dropped the whole line.

LitG:

Last week's number crunching of American economy inflation and comic book inflation, the latter outstripping the former 3 to 1 (and very soon 4 to 1) caused lots of comments on the blogosphere.

One common complaint was that the costs of creating comics had gone up ahead of inflation, in terms of salaries, land, paper costs, selling fewer copies per title and more. True. Yet in the same period the Washington Times has risen from 20c to 50c, an under-inflation rise, and this is at a time when newspapers are really suffering. And "Civil War" and "Secret Invasion" sold from 300-400,000, with trade paperback income on top, something you never had in the seventies. yet still cost $3.99 an issue. And technology has brought down all sorts of costs as well.

Of course there are reasons why comics aren't pegged to general inflation. But why should the customer care? And if the books hit $3.99 across the board, are you finally going to see more of them leave?

One title that certainly caused quite a stink pricewise this week was "Astonishing X-Men: Ghost Boxes" which provided a massive 16 pages of story, with a few additional pages of script, for the grand sum of $3.99. Cue revolt up and down the USA. Or, at least, some pull list titles put back on the shelf.

Not Britain, it managed a week delay there. Expect our rivers of blood on Thursday.

So I was at my LCS yesterday attempting to get Joker... and Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, which I reserved a while ago but still weren't there, so I was looking at other hardcovers. Green Arrow: Quiver sounds pretty cool.... might check it out around Christmas, as does that "Last Laugh" GN, have any of you heard anything about that? The cover kind of reminded me of this old comic I had ages ago. After that, I got to looking through some stuff on the specials shelf.... long story short, have any of you seen the variant cover to Ultimate Spider-Man #100? It looked just like the cover to ASM #100! So cool that they did that.

I have it, it's infinitley better than the standard cover

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

Was there ever a story where Spider-Man found out that Deadpool has a harem of Gwen Stacy clones?

(I know that I asked this in another thread, but the fact that such an obvious story apparently never got told just frustrates me.)

Quiver is a great story. Kevin Smith's first arc on Green Arrow and features a bunch of characters. Very good read.

The Last Laugh sounds familiar... is it the Joker mini by Brubaker? If so, that's a great read too.

Gotham Central is the best Batman series. Get the first trade/hardcover of that.

I don't know whether you're joking about the USM #100 variant cover because that was a running gag we were doing in the announcement thread.

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

Joker's Last Laugh is a terrible event comic from the early 00's written by Chuck Dixon. It's just awful.

Oh yeah! I got that out of the library and it was absolutely terrible. I couldn't even finish it.

The Man Who Laughs is the Brubaker one.

Yes, it was very awful. One of the worst Joker stories I ever, up there with Emperor Joker.

Will do next time I'm looking for some straight-up Gotham.

Sigh...

I seconded Gotham Central. You being a Batman fan, I'm surprised you haven't read it already.
