The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Loves Crappy Variant Covers

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

Who's the red skinned guy?

No idea but i'm looking forward to this as now this has a preview if it is indeed super hero squad, the tv show and the game should get new info soon

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

OK so I'm reading James Robinson's Wikipedia article when i see the section entitled personal life. Now expecting to get a bit of an insight into the experiences of this character (e.g. for Geoff Johns it talks about his sister who died in a plane crash, and must be one of the most important things to happen in his life at least that we know about). Anyway for james robinson we get

"he's mates with fellow comic book authors Geoff Johns and Sterling Gates"

Who's sterling gates? - I hear you ask, and unfortunately the wikipedia article does not seek to answer this question but merely points out once again, "he's mate's with Geoff Johns and Sterling Gates, oh and he's starting to write supergirl this month".

A little more research i see he's written some of the short stories durring Sinestro Corps War (I guess cuz he's mate's with Geoff Johns). Looks like he's the current writer for supergirl and green lantern corps then...but seriously where did this guy come from? Is he any good? And did he really just skip the indie scene and head straight for DC cuz Geoff Johns and James Robinson like him?

Which is by no means a bad thing...just thought it was a little wierd and wondered if anyone here knows any more than the wikipedia article?

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

I like what I read of his, but I never heard of him until recently.

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

It does seem like he's come out of nowhere. Though I wouldn't mind if it was just Geoff Johns writing under an alias. :D

I don't think of him as 'coming out of nowhere' but that's possibly because he was most prolific writing in the mid-90s --- Starman and Firearm (which was basically a British private dick with no superpowers in a superpowered LA) and loads or random work for hire material.

I think he just seems so unknown because he's never really made it a point to strongly identify himself with another property since Starman and chooses instead to do contract work that is "interesting" at least that's as far as I can gather from him in an old 1996 interview with Wizard.

I think Proj was talking about Sterling Gates being a Johns alias, but I could be wrong.

I'm guessing the section about the Robinson/Johns/Gate trifecta was put there to hype their close work together on the Superman triangle, which looks like it could turn out to be a pretty epic brain trust. And from what I've heard in interviews, the three of them do seem to be pretty tight socially.

Anyway, the impression I've always got of Robinson is that he's a pretty private guy who likes to let his work speak for himself. Hence, the lack of major information on the Personal Life section. OTOH, he did have a letters column for most of his run on Starman, which should have provided plenty of fodder of information to fill in there. So who knows?

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

Yeah, I was talking about Sterling Gates. I know who James Robinson is, though I still need to finish Starman.

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

There's an interesting bit at Lying in the Gutters about the price of comics and how likely it looks that comics will have a regular price of $3.99 next year. If this does happen, how many will continue to buy them?

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

I'd cut down, certainly... Perhaps switch over to trades despite how little that appeals to me...

Hopefully the next price change holds back a while longer.

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

I would continue with certain titles that I can't wait to read and other in trades.

I've already stopped buying singles. They are already too expensive. The only book I'm buying in issues is Fell and 99% of the reason for doing so is to show support for a book being issued at a $1.99 price point.

Trades rock.

I hate singles so much.

I'd buy in trades if marvel's trade department hadn't gone insane

time was that it took about three months for a trade to come out after the release of the final issue in an arc, but now everything get's Premiere HC's and either takes 9 months to come out, or it never actually makes it to trade and your stuck with the premiere

I should start downloading

I agree I prefer them if as you get the full story and can read straight through. Issues unless i can get them all at once I hate it when it has to be continued and I have to wait like a month to find out what the hell is going to happen

And DC has started this too, with GL stuff at least... It's ****ing irritating. Unless it's 12 issues or more, IT SHOULDN'T BE A HARDCOVER!!! God Damn... I loved it when they had the "okay, three trades, then a hardcover of those three trades"... It was a much better system.

Image is the only one on the ball with Trades in general... One month after the last issue in the arc comes out, they put out a trade.

DC gets a little credit for putting out trades of older material, but both companies should work harder at keeping things in print. Some Batman trades haven't been reprinted in a decade.

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Is Reading Watchmen?!

I understand the HC first. They make more money off them.

The only grips I have is DC takes forever for the trade to come out.

Green Lantern is 3 volumes behind other the hardcovers or so.

At least they stopped leaving out so many issues out of collections like Batgirl & Gotham Central.

I still don't like that they don't release trades to comics that don't sell well. That last Aquaman series was one. I loved it, but they only did a trade for the first arc.

Marvel has a better trade system. They still seem to the oversized hardcovers for the ones that they have been doing like the Ultimate comics.
