Avengers New Avengers discussion (#1-20; spoilers)

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

Has Civil War #1 come out yet? I got to check it out then. Was it good? Another thing I didn't like about the issue was that how come Sentry has the long hair still? I mean is it just when he turns into Sentry that his hair grows or is it an error by Bendis? Just can't wait for Magneto.

Yes. May 3rd. There's a thread on it.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

This takes place before Civil War, remeber at the end of #1 the position Cap was in? Its probably just before it

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

Good issue. I like the idea that the powers may have become sentinent; it was hardly a surprise what had happened with it being a collection of the powers of the de-powered mutants.

Agent Hill - wow. She's gone from being a pain in their *** to just about as close to a villain as one could get without crossing the line. I hope we get Fury back soon leading this team and he takes her head-on. Bendis is doing a great job with her.

Spider-Man is a total *****. And his costume blows.

And I'm really not liking the coloring job. The colors are ruining Deodato's great art.

3.75/5

I won't lie. I like her. At first--I wasn't impressed and just thought of her as the standard *****.......but now her decisiveness and direct approach to all the threats, have begun to grow on me.

She's gone from underling to female Fury.....just without the compassion for the greater good. She's just all about the mission.

I like her.

I think he's just in over his head with the Avengers. Doc Ock wants to rob a bank and threaten to blow up NY? Fine---Spidey can handle it. Dealing with a cosmic threat and your power is sticking to the wall? You deserve to get your *** handed to you. Go back to petty street thugs.

Oh I do too. She's perfect for the position she's in. And I like the position she is moving toward for the registration act, seeing as how nobody (the Avengers at least) can stand her.

She's an extremely strong, extremely well-written, and extremely well-sed secondary character in this book, and Bendis should get credit for that.

Which is why he has declined to be an Avenger before

For as much griping as we do on Bendis for a lot of his formulaic writing....you gotta give credit where credit is due.

Bendis has brought 3 second string female characters to the forefront and made them viable characters.

Before Bendis's New Avengers---who really cared about Spider-Woman? Before Bendis---Ms Marvel was long forgotten and merely mentioned for continuity sake. And now Hill.

Don't even get me started on how much I love Bendis's Luke Cage. I'm seriously jonesin' for a solo series on him from BMB.

That doesn't exactly help the situation he's in now though does it? It's like a crackhead saying he said no to crack 7 years ago. But then decided to say "oh what the hell?" like 3 months ago. Don't help the current position now.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

Totally agreed about Bendis. As much as I've had to criticize some of his other work (especially lately) I don't think there has been a single issue yet of NA that I haven't been satisfied with. Even the Ronin identity issue was well done (failure to live up to the hype doesn't count). His Luke Cage is near perfect and I agree about Jessica Drew - she's great.

Spidey is indeed over his head, but he had to figure there would be missions like this. They recruited him to clean up the prison break mess, and now he's kind of been sucked into something that's waaaaay over this head. And on top of that, he's got that horrible costume.

Reviewlet:

New Avengers #19 (Bendis/Deodato; Marvel). Hey, I liked this issue, the first time in the 13 or 14 issues I've read that I can say that. Bendis writes a great Iron Man, and for once his pseudo-science sounded halfway believable. I liked the attempt to flesh Maria Hill out a bit as well; yes, she's still a cast-iron *****, but she isn't quite the cardboard character she's been in earlier issues (plus some members of SHIELD get some great lines in this issue). The trademark Bendis dialog tics have been toned down this issue (sentences that trail off into ellipses; characters who stutter and stammer at inappropriate moments; characters who shout or swear as a sole method of conveying emotion), and although Iron Man spends several pages telling the reader the plot (or several potential plots, anyway), it's done in an interesting way. The rest of the New Avengers don't get a lot of page time, other than Spider-Man, who is the issue's "damsel in distress", but the plot moves forward at a snappy pace and sets the next issue up well. It's starting to shape up as a team book, which of course means it's time for Civil War to kick in and break the team up.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

Just read the annual. Thought it was ok, but two points immediately springs to mind:
1. Why is Spider-man wearing his mask when he´s inside the tower chilling with the others? He´s got a skin condition?
2. Jessica Jones was calling her mom to tell about the wedding. According to Alias, her parents are dead. Did I miss somehting, or did Bendis?

Just flipped through this issue. I agree that she's becoming a more well-developed character, but doesn't anybody else feel she's just turning into a Caucasian version of Amanda Waller from DC's Checkmate and Justice League Unlimited? :?

I wouldn't go that far....but I can see the similarities. I wouldn't put it past Bendis to decide that she has to be somewhat different from Fury so he's looking to pull inspiration from different sources.

Bendis should always get credit for that. He did the same thing with Cage. He's really not afraid to pull some C-Lister up.

Well, it's new. Either he's familiarizing to wearing it or he just thinks it's cool.

Good point, didn't realise that. I'd say Bendis, not you.

Her biological parents are dead, but after the accident she was taken in with another family, which is where she got the name Jones. Jones isn't her birth name.

Thanks E for clearing that up! Just got Alias Omnibus today, so I will finally re-read that wonderful series again...

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

Personally, I really liked the issue. I thought it was one of Bendis' better issue of New Avengers. I loved seeing the Sentry just kick ***. The only thing that I was bugged me was that Iron Man made it back from the Moon to a low earth orbit in what seemed like a moment. I know I'm nit picking at the little thing here but I notice this s***.

My personal choice for explaining Micheal is the idea that Magneto's powers were sentient and have now taken control of the rest. I like this one because it could both explain why Micheal went to Genosha and can give Magneto back his powers. The most plausible explaination is probably that Micheal was an energry absorbing mutant that no one ever identified who aborbed the energy fields released by M-day.

I now want to see Captain America snap Maria Hill's neck during Civil War then I see Tony Stark taking over as commander of SHIELD. I'm not sure why want this to happen, but I do. She a b**** and I both hate and respect that.

4.5/5
