Avengers New Avengers discussion (#1-20; spoilers)

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

#17

Um...

First I'd like to say that anyone who thought Luke Cage under the pen of Bendis was lame can kiss my hairy white ***. You'll love it too.

I was even reading through Bendis DD run last night and thought how cool Cage was and now in today's issue of New Avengers, we're shown how valuable, how interesting, how cool, Luke Cage actually is.

Starts off with the Avengers coming to Detroit. Kids skipping school, Teenagers looking for drugs and vandelizing. The New Avengers show up and just flex their muscles a bit. The local news team gets there and wants answers from Captain America, who tells them to ask Luke Cage.

Cage tells them that the mayor of New York does a little project where he dispenses police officers to bad neighborhoods just so their prescence will prevent crime from happening. Cage goes on about what he said to Cap in the earliest issues. How he wants his say and wants to make some suggestions. This was his suggestion. "On days off instead of playing X-Box and waiting for the next alien invasion" they would go out to these cities and do some common good for common people.

One of the coolest things in comics that I have ever read and despite how mediocre/bad/good/great the rest of the issue was, this part alone should be commended.

The Avengers then have to run after they're alerted about "the collective" on their way to meet with the collective they're briefed by Hill about what has happened to Alpha Flight, and the risk of sending in civilians soldiers. The X-Men are weary to put mutant populants in harm's way, the Fantastic Four are in another dimension, The New Avengers are the only hope. Captain America is denied backup from Daisy Johnson because Shield will not let him contact her and The Sentry is being a pussey (god, he's the biggest waste of a character  ).

Iron Man goes down to talk to the collective and we're givin' another cool scene where he tries to make contact with "The Collective" whose name is "Mik - ale - y" Shield interprets it as "Michael". I thought "Mickali" or whatever Colossus bro's name is (not saying it is Colossus' bro just that's the name that popped into my head). Anyway Iron Man is being civil and calmed the humanoid creature down

and then...

Warbird/Carol Danvers comes in and ruins the entire issue. I'm serious. She comes down and starts fighting The collective. There's a big explosion the Quinjet crashes and Danver ends up absorbing(?) The Collective.

3.5/5

Really liked the issue but **** I hate... I mean HATE Carol Danvers. She sucks. One of the worst charactes ever. I mean it was pointless. She was pointless in the coming out to the public issue and she's pointless here. Ugh!!! :arrgh:

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

I got a feeling Sentry will wake up soon enough, he just needs to be taking out of his shell every now and then. Once he gets word of what is happening, he'll come too.

Danvers can kiss my white pasty ***. She does suck.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

First off - awesome mention of the D. Highland Park looks exactly like that, and CBS 62 is a real TV station in Detroit.

Deodato is so awesome. I hope he stays on this book forever.

MwoF - Iron Man asked him if it was "Michael" and he said yes.

So are we to assume that Carol Danvers has just absorbed the collected energy of all former energy-based mutants?

I read through it quickly in the shop. I must've missed that. Thanks.

...

...

Whose Michael?

I guess so. I hope it eats her from the inside out and she dies tomorrow.

Actually, he asked him more specifically if he was Michael KORVAC and the reply was just "Michael". So that one isn't clear - although WHY would they give a new threat the same name as the old one? Wait, this is Marvel, with 11 Spider-people and two Jessicas in the same series...

And, come ON, all the "former" Avengers who live on the east coast and Cap wants Daisy Johnson? She isn't even a good threat match...

I wasn't aware that it was "Michael Korvac". That makes sense.

I'm not actually sure that "The Collective" is Michael Korvac, but that was Iron Man's first thought (and mine). Which could be bad, because the first time the Avengers tangled with Korvac he killed them all without much effort at all. Of course, then he brought them all back to life...

My best guess is that the new bad guy is actually a collective of Greatest Cosmic Bad Guy Hits - because, well, he's called "The Collective", which was my first hint that it's more than one thing.

Isnt he supposed to be the reaction to all mutants losing there powers? like all the energy of the lost powers created the collective? Im sure i saw that somewhere

I liked the issue. Bendis shows unparalled excellence by being able to develop characters beyond the core storyline. The intro scene shows what makes heroes admirable people. It's a very fundamental quality of all super-heroes which is to help the helpless. Glad to see Bendis show these kinds of attributes in his writing.

So to the action, I liked seeing Tony nervous about encountering this thing. I really hate seeing Ms. Marvel charge into the situation. Who does that without even being informed about the problem? I hope the ungodly power she absorbed destroys her in a ungodly painly means.

Yeah....never really liked Luke Cage.................until now. Easily one of my favorite characters in New Avengers. If Bendis was to do a Cage spin-off or mini-series....it'd go on the pull list.

For me......that was the best party of the issue. Period.

Screw that. I didn't care too much for the art. The whole "neighborhood" part might not've bene so great if McNiven was doing this.......but I still prefer Finch.

?

There is an entry there for Korvac, which has a brief synopsis of the Avengers issues he was in. Does it not tell you enough, or is it how it may POTENTIALLY apply to The Collective?

Yeah...I checked and it tells about Korvac (kinda). Just confusing I guess.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

I liked the issue.

I love the way that Bendis writes Cage. That neighbor scene was genius.

They should of shown more emotion from Wolverine on the death of Alpha Flight. I mean they are some of his best friends. He pouted for a minute and went back to tough guy.

I like the refrence to Secret War and it's cool to see Daisy return. Logan's reaction to that was funny but it's what ruined the Death's. Logan would of been all over The Collective.

And Ms.Marvel. Are you serious? She promises to be a better hero and what does she do. She sees Iron Man and "Michael" tallking and she attacks him. None of the other Avengers are around. That should of been Wolverine getting revenge for Alpha Flight. Ms.Marvel could of saved him and abosrbed the energy. But it was good none the less.

Will Daisy return? I was under the impression that SHIELD would in no way make make contact with her for Captain America because she was a Fury Loyalist. The mention of her was a nice touch though.

I think Fury being in the mix here, unbeknownst to SHIELD, changes things a little though.

I'm *expecting* her and Sentry to make appearances.

As a side note, because I don't think I mentioned it, but I liked the followup with Luke Cage and his new ways of doing things. I like when writers follow up on things like that.

I'm just really enjoying this book. Best 616 title, easily.

Re: New Avengers series discussion (spoilers)

I got my "Secrets And Lies" HC today. I thought it was pretty good. I enjoyed Ronin. Finch's art was grea. He drew a sexy Madame Hydra and a badass Silver Samuari. I loved the interplay between the characters that Bendis' writes.

The Spider-Woman issues weren't that great. I'm not a big fan of Frank Cho. It was nice to see Secret War refrenced. Spider-Woman still hasn't convinced me that she will be a traitor. She won't. But the forces behind Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D, I'm interested in seeing how that plays out.

I want to see more of Ronin on the team. She and Wolverine will probaly be the shadow ops. Which is weird considering that Wolverine joined the help his public image after what happened in Millar's run. But he wants know part in it. It seems that Bendis changed his mind.

I liked the part with Jonah. That was awesome.

I thought the exact opposite - Ronin was ridiclously over-hyped and a bad story with bad art (and especially bad coloring). The Spider-Woman issues were very well written and Cho was great.

If we never see Ronin again color me thrilled.
