Marvel Cinematic Universe - Timeline

Nothing really new. At least it's kind of a confirmation for an assumption. Kevin Feige was asked when Ant-Man takes place. He answered with;

FEIGE: We don't exactly say. There's an indication that it's probably just after Ultron, just after Avengers 2. They all more or less take place within the chronology of the release of the movies. The exact months and the exact weeks are sometimes determined later.

Elsewhere in the interview he says the flashback(s) take place in the late 80's early 90's. EDIT: Read another article that confirmed it as 1989.

The interview was done back during Ant-Man's filming and released now, so some of this may have changed. The full interview is here; http://collider.com/ant-man-kevin-feige-talks-expanding-mythology-avengers-more/ if anyone is curious.

Cool. Pretty much confirming what we had always assumed, but it's always good to have official word on such things... even when they're pretty non-specific as this one is...

hi all,

firstly, my apologies if you have already covered this - I'm a bit of a newbie (this is my first post). i was rewetting through GoTG and noticed that in The Collectors office when they are going through the history of the Infinity stones/gems, that most of the overplayed audio and visuals occur at the beginning (or near to the beginning) of the universe itself. In terms of chronology, this would all be occurring before the Thor 2 prologue?? Is there any way that this could be reflected in the chronology. I think it could be really cool if all you saw was the creation of the infinity gems (I think The Collector refers to them as singularities) around a black screen with The Collector narrating then moving to Odin's two prologue scenes (from Thor and Thor 2)? It could almost be a discussion about how the universe came into existence as we know it today.

Its just a thought, maybe its useful (maybe not) - but i figured if anyone would know how to put this into a timestamped chronology of the MCU it would be you guys and girls :)

let me know what you think

Although what Kevin Feige said might suggest that CA:TWS should be moved to May 2014 which is more in line with it's theatrical release than the date shown during Batroc's interrogation which places it in Octover 2013??

Well, the way the timeline works, that scene still occurs in 2014 during the events of the film. It's a present day event of them watching a hologram of the creation of the stones.

It's sort of like if you were reading a newspaper from a year ago today. You're still reading that year old paper in the present, your act of reading that year old paper doesn't place you a year earlier physically/temporally speaking.

Now, had there been a prologue scene showing the creation of the stones that was its own thing, and not part of a scene with Collector narrating their creation to the Guardians in the present day, then I would absolutely have separated it and placed it at the very beginning, around 12-14 Billion BC.

But yeah, it's a present day scene, for sure.

Although what Kevin Feige said might suggest that CA:TWS should be moved to May 2014 which is more in line with it's theatrical release than the date shown during Batroc's interrogation which places it in Octover 2013??

Nah. Onscreen dates still trump the presumed release date alignment.

If there are absolutely no dates seen in the film, then using the release date is a fair approach. But any dates seen onscreen that are intended as present day (and dates seen in flashback scenes to place those) are always the top tier of canon in this case. Even over mentions made offscreen by actors/directors about timeline stuff. While I will use such comments to help place films or TV shows on the timeline, if an onscreen date doesn't agree with those comments made in interviews or whatever, the onscreen date ALWAYS overrides (as long as it doesn't conflict with another onscreen date, at which point the one that causes less ripples is chosen).

Same thing with Daredevil. It came out in April, 2015, but timeline wise occurs from August to September or October of 2014 based on the date seen on the phone and the onset of colder weather towards the midway point of the show.

So I guess it's safe to say there may also be a 6 month (or maybe more) window between release date and the internal film/TV show timeline in certain cases. Agents of SHIELD season 1 is another example.

Be a case of more going with filming dates rather than release dates

In that case, yeah, but again we don't necessarily want to take that as a general rule because the TV shows and movies have very different filming schedules, and more importantly, even then it's possible for the intent to be set at a different point on the timeline.

I would say a tentative yes. Because she says Scott Lang is set to be released from prison on the premiere date of the movie. I would wait to get a more firm date from the Ant Man movie itself.

Viral Marketing for Ant-Man has produced this: https://youtu.be/HkZwlIYLNBQ
More is gonna be released July 7th
Is viral marketing considered canon? It stars Christine Everhart, a notable supporting character from Iron Man and Iron Man 2?

Yeah I think that qualifies as canon, as long as it doesn't conflict with anything in the film itself, as Spoon mentions:

As long as the film doesn't establish Scott getting out of prison at a different time/date, it's fine. And I doubt the film will present any obvious dates, as they seem to be shying away from dates seen on props, etc in the newer films post-Winter Soldier.

Plus, with it mentioning the events in Sokovia from Avengers 2 (which presumably happen around May, 2015, near the time of the film's release), that lines up nicely with Ant-Man occurring in real-time, about 2-3 months after Age of Ultron.

Good catch. However we still have to wait and see if the prop makes it into the final cut in any visible way.

I've got a fun timeline related project for us to work on while we wait for Ant-Man to be released.

I have compiled a partial list of all the music included on MCU soundtracks and scores, using Spotify.

http://open.spotify.com/user/dsethlewis/playlist/02RSshLlBWFWTMnt8XsymV

IM1 and DD scores are missing, but available for 10 bucks each on iTunes. Not all the tracks in the playlist were actually played in the canon MCU.

So, two related possibilities here. One is to associate each canon track with its placement in the timeline. We can make a google doc and work on that together.

And/or we can trim and reorder the playlist to make a mega-score. That is, each track is arranged according to two sorting criteria: where in the MCU it took place and where within its film (or season, in the case of DD) it took place. The premise here is that MCU films follow a standard three-act format.

So the beginning of the playlist might look like:

Opening sequence of IM1 (or TFA if we decide to go chronological)
Opening sequence of TIH
Opening sequence of IM2
...and so on and so forth

Anyone want to tackle either of these with me?

Wait, you want to make a chronological score of the entire MCU?

Something like that, yeah, is the first option I mentioned. I don't think it would actually be that hard, since some of the work has been done for us already.

Par exemple: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Man_(soundtrack)

The other option would be a little harder I think, but more fun to listen to. Anyways, I'm just looking for a fun puzzle to work on between MCU releases.

Wow. Good for you. But I think I'll sit this one out. :)
