Marvel Cinematic Universe - Timeline

Ok, think I have AoS Season 2 figured out. Due to fact latter half of Season (really latter 3/4 of the season) has episodes picking up immediately or soon after the previous one, there are really only two places large breaks of time can be placed.

2x01 and 2x02 must occur in April, 2014, due to the One Year Earlier tag (and they must occur a year before 2x20 and the Age of Ultron film which occur in April, 2015). 2x03 occurs an indeterminate amount of time after 2x02. We can presume Simmons was undercover at Hydra for months at that point. 2x04 picks up an indeterminate amount of time after 2x03. Since 2x04-2x22 feature no real break points to insert stretches of time, 2x04 - 2x05 have to be placed in March, 2015, covering the month, with 2x12-2x19, AoU, 2x20-2x22 occurring in April, 2015.

This also helps keep Daredevil Season 2 and Jessica Jones Season 1 uninterrupted and able to be watched in their entirety chronologically speaking.

Take a gander, let me know if you notice any problems with that layout.

Onto Season 3...

Best line in Agents of SHIELD so far (regarding to Cal's Hyde formula):

Coulson: "Tell me you figured out what drugs Cal took, because my gut is saying: everything ever made."

Simmons: "I haven't fully sequenced the formula yet, if only for the multitude of trace drugs found, but my initial list includes: anabolic androgenic steroids, a liver enzyme blocker, various metabolic enhancers, methamphetamines, what appears to be gorilla testosterone, and--no lie--a drop of peppermint."

I imagine Cal must've been inspired by Hunter S. Thompson when creating the formula.

Ok, notes for AoS Season 3:

3x01 has no specific time references in terms of time passed between 2x22 and 3x01, but we can figure that out due to 3x05 "4,772 Hours" being a little over 6 and a half months. Backtracking a bit from there (to cover time passed during 3x01-3x04) places 3x01 around 6 months after 2x22, so October 2015. Bobbi mentions there's been no new reading on the Monolith in "months". Bobbi is still also doing rehab for her knee injured in 2x21/2x22. Fitz also mentions he tracked the parchment that has info on the Monolith to Mosul Central Museum in Iraq, until the museum was taken over by "your extremist buddies when they ransacked the place this year". This is a reference to ISIS/ISIL, who occupied it in 2014 but in February 2015 (around 8 months before this episode occurs) the terrorists began burning books and destroying artifacts. This is likely what Fitz is referencing. Coulson also mentions the "Pym Technologies disaster", a reference to ending of Ant-Man, which occurred in early October, 2015. Presumably AoS 3x01 picks up in middle or late October.

3x02 picks up immediately after 3x01, literally seconds later. Coulson gives a vague "its been months" comment regarding Simmon's disappearance into the Monolith. At the 7:07 mark, Ward is getting out of a convertible in a parking garage, and sticker on the car window shows registration expiration of 10/2015, which is that month. Garner says Joey won't be ready for field work for at least 3 months, so presumably Joey's first mission in 3x09 "Closure" happens around 3 months later, course that depends on if the episodes follow on after the other with no break points. The aerial establishing shot at 41:24 shows mostly green trees, but a few changing color to brown, red, or yellow, indicating Fall is in swing, which lines up with October setting for the early episodes. Werner von Strucker (posing undercover as a student) asks Garner if he'd be able to sign up for/add his class, and Garner asks if he's "ok with a few weeks of make-up work", indicating the semester started a few weeks before, which lines up with September, maybe late August, when Fall semester college courses usually start in US.

3x03 picks up the next day after 3x02, as second scene shows the team discussing Simmons lab tests after returning from Maveth at end of 3x02. Simmons is also still sensitive to light and sound, indicating she only just returned. At the 5:35 mark, an establishing shot of the bar Hunter and May are in has a bunch of pumpkins lined up on stairway to left of the bar, and a corn stalk decoration around tree in front. This likely indicates its October, possibly November, but October is likelier since the previous episodes, which this one immediately follows, also occur in October. A banner inside the bar reads "Boston Red Socks Gameday Special" (anyone from Boston knows its spelled Red Sox, so guess the prop department dropped ball on that one). Regardless, it shows its during MLB season, which runs from April to October (regular season) and October to November for playoffs and World Series. The Red Sox had a crappy year in 2015 so didn't make it to playoffs, and their last game that year was on October 4. That doesn't really line up with the timeline of the MCU, since 2x22 occurred likely in early to mid April, and Simmons was on Maveth for over 6 and a half months (198 days), which would put the timeline around mid October, maybe even late October (which would account for the Harvest/Fall decorations outside the bar). We'll chalk that discrepancy up to MCU being different timeline than our own. Perhaps the Red Sox made it to the playoffs in the MCU reality in 2015.

3x04 picks up likely not long after 3x03, as Bobbi asks Fitz about him and Simmons having dinner. Mack also mentions the ATCU were after Daisy "the other day", which occurred in 3x03. Ward's henchman mentions the fight that Hunter got into with Spud to infiltrate Hydra happened "last week". Since there's a week span I'll use that to push 3x04 to November.

3x05 (the present day framing portions) picks up immediately after 3x04.

3x06 picks up immediately after 3x05. Garner mentions Strucker signed up for his class (which happened at end of 3x02) "a few weeks ago".

3x07 picks up immediately after 3x06.

3x08 picks up very soon after 3x07, likely the next day, as Garner is being transferred into ATCU custody (after being captured at end of 3x07). Lincoln also mentions "last night" was first time he'd slept well in awhile, due to being on the run, and he only joined the team in the previous episode. Rosalyn mentions she couldn't check her fantasy football scores due to them blocking reception on her phone, confirming this episode occurs sometime during NFL (or College) football season which ran from September to January, and playoffs during January, 2016. This aligns with episode occurring likely in November, 2015.

3x09 picks up sometime after previous episode. Its indeterminate exactly how much, but likely not too long, a week or two maybe. It allows a slight break point, or possibly even enough to push into January, 2016, if necessary (depending on how rest of season works out).

3x10 picks up immediately after 3x09.

3x11 picks up sometime after 3x10, presumably a month or so due to the "3 months from now" tag at beginning of episode which showed scene from 3x22, placing 3x11 in January, 2016.

3x12 picks up not too long after 3x11, but could be a week or two. Either way its a possibly break point in terms of moving up a month. Malick makes mention that Ward's body isn't improving/healing, indicating at least some time (maybe a few weeks) has passed since he came to Earth through the portal at end of 3x10. Simmons analyzes a sample of Daisy's blood "taken two years ago before she was exposed to Terrigen". That aligns with it occurring sometime between Season 1 and 2, during the winter Talbot pursed the team.

3x13 picks up soon after 3x12, presumably not long after Malick's plane landed, and the episode covers a day and a half. The interrogator mentions its the "dead of winter", likely indicating its January or February. Hunter mentions events of 2x18 "The Frenemy of My Enemy" as occurring "last year". That works, as 3x13 is in at least February, 2016, and 2x18 occurred just before Age of Ultron in April, 2015, so its around ten months actual time, and certainly fulfills the "last year" dialogue since it was early 2015, and its early 2016 when Hunter says this.

3x14 picks up an indeterminate amount of time after 3x13. Opens with shot of motorcycle license plate which expired Jan 2016, which may be when this episode occurs. Mack mentions Bobbi and Hunter leaving SHIELD was recent, so presumably this is within a week or two max. Daisy mentions "Damage Control will clean up" the scene.

3x15 picks up an indeterminate amount of time after 3x14, but not too long after as its said Mack is still recovering from his gunshot wound (that he got in 3x14). Most likely a week or so at most between the episodes.

3x16 picks up not long after 3x15, likely the next day since Malick is returning home, and Coulson is still obsessing over Ward's return as Hive. Coulson also tells May he's sorry about Andrew (his final transformation into Lash), so that likely happened day before at most as well. Daisy's facial lacerations from her fight with Malick previous episode are still fresh, and Fitz and Simmons are examining the skeletons of the board members of Transia Corp that Ward/Hive killed in previous episode. All signs show this as picking up next day after 3x15.

3x17 picks up immediately after 3x16. A note on the flashback to Alveus creation: Coulson mentions "all the ancient Satanic creation myths, they were based on him". That implies Alveus/Hive's metamorphosis into an Inhuman occurred pre-New Testament days.

3x18 picks up the next day after 3x17, with the team fixing up base. Fitz confirms this by mentioning his and Simmon's hookup happened "last night".

3x19 picks up sometime after 3x18, long enough for Radcliffe to have gotten his process up and running (maybe a few days).

3x20 picks up an indeterminate amount of time after 3x19. Not long, as Lincoln mentions he's been in quarantine for "days". Also of note, Peggy is shown to be 95 years old at the time of her death. She was born April 9, 1921 and her 95th birthday would be April 9, 2016. Her funeral is held on April 10, 2016, so presumably she died on her birthday and funeral was set up quickly (not unlikely if she'd been sick for awhile and her death was expected, not to mention her high prominence in SHIELD/British government). Coulson's leg is still healing from the injury sustained in 3x18, so its not too long after that episode. Daisy's facial lacerations (from 3x16) are also finally almost healed. Mack's broken bones (sustained by Daisy in 3x19) are also healing.

3x21 picks up not long after 3x20. A technician tells Fitz parts for the hangar door (which was damaged at end of 3x17 by Daisy under Hive's control) were delayed "for a few days", indicating it hasn't been too long since then.

3x22 picks up immediately after 3x21.

This is not a good thing

Simmons: "I haven't fully sequenced the formula yet, if only for the multitude of trace drugs found, but my initial list includes: anabolic androgenic steroids, a liver enzyme blocker, various metabolic enhancers, methamphetamines, what appears to be gorilla testosterone, and--no lie--a drop of peppermint."

Wow, the current arc is really paying heavy homage to the early seasons.
May takes a drug to make her strong enough to fight the Patriot
and they say the same thing about it.

That's because it is the Hyde formula. Loved hearing Bakshi and seeing Simmons boss when she went undercover at Hydra

Their quality has nothing to do with chronology/timeline. :?

I mean, Iron Man 2 was absolute crap, but it's still canon, so... same with Star Wars timeline, I still include the Prequels. ;)

I just wish there was more stuff going on during them. It's a lot easier to enjoy a crappy show when at least a side story doesn't suck. The way I view the timeline is several, hopefully one day, interconnecting storylines of a freaking long movie. So if another thing is breaking it up it's more bearable.

So far the only bad things in the MCU for me are: Agent Carter season 2, Jessica Jones, Iron Man 2, Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Daredevil season 2, Agents of SHIELD season 3, Spider-Man: Homecoming Prelude and Avengers: Black Widow Strikes. It's gonna be real tempting when I get to these parts to edit stuff out.

we don't see what happened then, doesn't mean nothing happened though. :)

So you're saying I should put in title cards that say "imagine something cooler is happening elsewhere" throughout the episodes? Good idea!

Dude, nothing is perfect. It's not a big deal if what we got is canon, seeing as many others may think differently about them than you.

In case you think I'm being a Negative Nancy, I mentioned 45 episodes, 4 movies, and 5 comics as bad out of 166 episodes, 5 short films, 17 web shorts, 14 movies, and 38 comics Even then AoS season three has some good episodes so it's ever fewer. There's plenty of good stuff to go around for us to call stuff as we see them.

I'll take all seasons of AOS over the horrendous season 2 of Agent Carter. That's the absolute worst of the MCU.

Looks like Infinity War will take place in 2018:

http://www.cinemablend.com/news/165...vengers-infinity-war-according-to-kevin-feige

Me: Will Infinity War discuss any of the events that have been happening to them in the last four years?

Kevin Feige: Yeah. They will have evolved slightly, in some recognizable ways. But really they'll be the Guardians and dealing with the **** storm they have to deal with.

Me: When we catch up with the Guardians in Infinity War, will it be four years since we last saw them?

Kevin Feige: Um, yes.

Me: It will be.

Kevin Feige: Yes. Yeah, knowing that outside of the Guardians franchise, we don't necessarily always date the movies. You don't always know, we don't say, '2012, 2013...' We do in the Guardians because you do the math and 1988, and it's 26 years later. But we never say, 'Oh, this takes place in 2018, this takes place in 2017.' But it was important for the story that James wanted to tell that they're still relatively fresh in their new group.

I'll take all seasons of AOS over the horrendous season 2 of Agent Carter. That's the absolute worst of the MCU.

Season 1: Well paced period drama, unlikable characters grow and become nuanced, Black Widow and Dr. Faustus combo, great cameos, fantastic Jarvis, emotional weight of losing a loved one and moving on, feminist aspect is realistic for the time period and plays into the plot, incredibly emotional death, great cinematography, can tell they spent a lot of money on it, have Markus/McFeely and a Russo brother on board to have it heavily tie to the Captain America films, and ends with the character making a significant character growth and setting up the one-shot.

Season 2: Remember everything you loved about season one? **** it, we brought DANCING WITH THE STARS!

Cool, man, I didn't know you did interviews. Love that you're asking him about the timeline, lol. Awesome.

But yeah, more or less the films' release year is representative (more or less) of when they're set. Obviously there are some exceptions, as Captain America The First Avenger was set mostly in the 1940's, but it's bookend scenes set in modern day were established as occurring not long before Avengers by the Fury's Big Week comic, so 2012 instead of 2011 when CA-TFA was released. Obviously GotG Vol 2 is set in 2014, three years before it's released, and Spider-Man: Homecoming will be set a few months after Civil War, in 2016. So, seems they're opening up the approach to timeline setting for the different films. That will, however, somewhat complicate the continuity on their end, but I imagine most of the films will similarly follow a setting in year they occur (or close to, like Winter Soldier, which can be debated as occurring in late 2013 or 2014 if you ignore the security cam date).

AoS Season 4 notes...

4x01 opens an indeterminate amount of time after 3x22 and its flash forward scene. Ghost Rider's car has a registration that expires July, 2017. Coulson mentions the Zephyr One spent 6 weeks in the air (with the Quinjet touching down to ferry them to ground). This means its been at least a month and a half since October, 2016, possibly more. The Scottish League Cup Finals that Fitz and Radcliffe were watching occurred on November 27, 2016 in real world. Whether that date holds true for MCU is unlikely, but still a good place to start from.

4x02-4x04 all occur one after the other. There is a possible break between 4x03 and 4x04, but not long.

4x05 has Robbie mention the drive by that paralyzed Gabe happened "a few years ago".

4x06 has Gabe mention Robbie took the Charger a few days ago (4x04) and he hasn't seen him since. Mace mentions Robbie/Ghost Rider killed the prisoner (seen in 4x05) "yesterday".

4x07 picks up immediately after 4x06. Mack mentions Coulson and Fitz returning after 5 years, in reference to what happened to the scientists working with Eli, indicating Robbie became Ghost Rider in 2012. Its also mentioned the Senator's brother has been in terrigenesis cocoon for seven months, which means 3x22 had to occur at least seven months before 4x07. With 3x22 occurring in April, 2016 (and its flashforward at end happening in October, 2016), that would place 4x07 in at least November or December, 2016 (or later if he wasn't exposed to the terrigen immeiately), which lines up well with the League Cup finals date of late November for 4x01. Of course, its later revealed this occurs in April, 2017 (a full year after end of Season 3). Mack holds a picture of his daughter dated 4/18/2006.

4x08 seems to pick up the next morning after 4x07. Elena asks why Mack hasn't called her by her name (using "Yo-Yo" instead) for three months.

4x09 picks up immediately after 4x08.

4x10 picks up within a few days of 4x09 as Fitz mentions they just had funeral for Nathanson, who Aida killed at end of 4x08 and whose body was discovered in 4x09.

4x11 confirms that events of 4x08 occurred 5 days before, and events of 4x10 occurred 1 day before. Coulson says he spent 6 months on the plane with Mack (between 3x22's flashforward and the opening of 4x01). This also means only about a month (or less) passed between 4x01 and 4x07, and confirms Senator Nadeer's brother was exposed to the terrigen very soon after its release into ocean in 3x22. This also confirms that, if 3x22 occurs in April, and its flashforward/epilogue scene in October, that would put Season 4 as picking up in April, 2017. This is confirmed when Mack mentions its day before his daughter's birthday (April 18, 2006), putting 4x11 on April 17, 2017.

4x12 seems to pick up the next day after 4x11, as Fitz has repaired the Radcliffe LMD and the real Radcliffe is first seen on the Superior's sub, after being told he should meet Superior by Nadeer at end of previous episode (presumably he was taken to do so that night). Skye tells Sam Koenig she's known him for three years. This works out since Daisy/Skye likely met Sam not long after meeting Billy in 1x22 (late December, 2013) with this episode set in April, 2017, so its actually almost 3 and a half years, 3 years and 5 months almost to the day. We can assume Skye was rounding down a bit. The episode covers two days, with most of the episode set on April 18, and the stinger at end occurring on April 19 (due to mention the battle at the Library occurred "last night").

4x13 picks up an indeterminate amount of time after 4x12, though not long. Only long enough for Coulson and Mack to track down Agnes. Radcliffe mentions he got the terrigen crystals from a "benefactor" (Hive) last year (Season 3, which works perfectly since Season 3 ended in April, 2016, and Season 4 seems to, in its entirety, occur in April, 2017 (though the later episodes of Season 4 may occur in May, 2017). Coulson mentions the LMD May had been with the team for "weeks", so at least two weeks pass between 4x08 and 4x13. Seems best to put the break between 4x12 and 4x13.

4x14 likely picks up next day after 4x13.

4x15 picks up immediately after 4x14. Strangely, it is snowing outside the window May is looking out of (at the SHIELD base/Playground), despite a few episodes earlier confirming it is April (or now even May) of 2017. The Playground's location is unknown, though likely somewhere in US, so its possible its in a northern state that may still have experienced snowfall into late April or early May.

4x16 picks up immediately after 4x15. Daisy mentions May had been in the Framework for "weeks" (since events of 4x08). Given fact not much time passes between 4x01-4x08, and only "weeks" between 4x08-4x16, this season doesn't cover much time at all.

4x17-4x19 cover a few days, basically a day per episode. It remains to be seen if time runs differently in the Framework compared to real world, but no reason to think it does, as that would likely create unnecessary obstacles for selling the illusion of the Framework as reality in terms of the living subjects (who are unaware of real world) since it would cause difference in circadian rhythms of their real bodies versus day/night cycle and brain perceptions within the Framework, etc. Therefore it seems the episodes set within the Framework (4x16-4x21) cover less than a week if pattern of one day per episode holds true in 4x20-4x21, let alone if they mention how long exactly they were within the Framework.
