Harry Potter Discussion (spoilers)

One of the most imaginative costumes at our local Barnes and Noble pre-book party was a young woman who came in a long red robe of silky material, with a hood and a string of feathers looped down her back, and a red mask painted over her eyes. She was, of course, Fawkes the Phoenix.

We also had an older gentleman who looked a lot like Albus Dumbledore (although he was wearing Slytherin colors), and a woman dressed up like Rita Skeeter. One of the store employees was Professor Snape for the evening, and he really got into the part. (Which becomes even funnier when you know that in real life he's one of the most mild-mannered people on the face of the Earth. )

It was very crowded, but everyone was very well behaved despite the excitement. And I think I had my picture taken at least half a dozen times. (I was there as an employee of Eyelop's Owl Emporium -- I had a pair of small plush owls sewn to my witch's hat, and a barn owl puppet sitting on my hand.) Thankfully I didn't make the local news.

My friend's mom totally dressed up as Bellatrix and looked amazing.

I debated on whether or not I should dress as Hagrid and decided I'd rather not want to die from humiliation.

I figured this was the more appropriate thread for this bit of news.

Rowling intends to write an Encyclopedia on the HP universe, which will include the fates of various characters post-DH. Warning: The link contains DH spoilers.

So. . .we're getting the HP version of The Silmarilion/The Book of Dust. Another Potter book to look forward to! YES!

I knew there was going to be an encyclopedia, but I didn't know it was going to contain post-DH information. Woo!

Not writing anymore Potter.

She'll be writing in this universe the rest of her life.

She's always said she'd think about doing an Encyclopedia-ish book. I think once we get that, peoples' thirst for these books will finally be over.

I wonder if the release of it will be as big as the other books, though. . .

It would have to be longer than Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages combined to get me to line up at midnight. But I have no doubt Rowling would hammer out something epic -- at least compared to those tiny tomes.

I had to get mine at Borders due to a previous reservation.

It was cool. My only problem was that the winner of the costume contest was a man dressed as Mrs. Weasley.
:? Are you sure he wasn't just some guy with red hair and a long coat who wondered in off the street?

If I dressed up as Snape, I'd just walk around taking "points" from everyone.

"Six points from Hufflepuff."
Does your friend's mom look like Helena Bonham-Carter?

Is she married?
Is she murderous and evil like Bellatrix?

Mmmm. Evil.

Sounds cool.

I have both of those. They are tiny, but they're pretty cool.

I love those books, and I wish she'd do Hogwarts: A History, in addition to the HP Encyclopedia. But, I think the Encyclopedia would be rather large. At least the size of the bigger books, if not larger. There's a lot to cover, from the past of certain characters, a summary of all the changes in the post-DH Wizarding World, the fate of the more important characters post-DH, possibly a list of important spells and famous witches and wizards, some of the more important wizarding discoveries (Like the twelve uses of dragon's blood). . .I think that'd about cover it, if she doesn't add in Hogwarts: A History as a bonus.

So, basically, an Encyclopedia combined with an extended Epilogue.

Hasn't Rowling been saying for years that she has hundreds of pages of notes of things that would never actually make it into the books? I'm assuming that that's what a lot of the encyclopedia will probably be.

Probably. In fact, I think she said in the interview that its already partially written because of those notes. She'll just have to organize and expand them a bit. I hope she crams as much into it as she possibly can.
