Harry Potter Discussion (spoilers)

(Gambon is still absolutely the wrong choice for Dumbledore, this only furthers that in my mind)

I completely agree. I've been disappointed with that choice since they first announced it.

Then again, I'm not a fan of Finneas' Voldemort either, so. . .

It's funny since they were considering Ian McKellen right after Harris died.

Gambon's Dumbledore is NOTHING like how I picture him in the book, but I think he works all right in the world of the movies.

Fienne's disappointed me in GOF but he upped the ante considerably in OOTP. I still picture him completely differently in the books, and if they had put David Bowie in the part, he would've been one of the most amazingly perfect and accurate casting choices ever, for me at least.

Once again I bring to you my redition of.... Lord Bowiedemort!

For me, Voldemort still has hair... The pitch black hair they described Riddle as having (i think she did anyways). He also has a nose.

He's one of those people who you could tell is old because of little lines around the eyes and the fact that his skin looks basically fake... inhumanly smooth and white. And the red eyes would be brighter red.

But I like Fiennes in the part. I agree about him fitting more in OOTP than in GOF. I think he would have been perfect casting, but they should have given him different make-up.

I picture him with a nose too, similar to the one in the picture there. Small and turned up and snake-like, but there.

One of my biggest problems with Fiennes is that his Voldemort seems like he's Fiennes' real age. I picture Voldemort, like you said, seeming distinctively old. Score another point for the Bowiemesiter.

And the red eyes would be brighter red.

They'd have to be red at all in the first place to be "brighter". Fiennes has perfectly human blue eyes in the movies. I don't think they should've done that.

It also bugs me how they didn't give Daniel Radcliffe green contact lenses starting by at least Prisoner of Azkaban, where Lupin and Sirius specifically reference them. You recognized his mother's eyes? You mean those normal blue eyes that like 50% of all British white people have?

I mean, Radcliffe already wears contact lenses in real life. I don't see any excuse for them not to have him wear them by the time the POA film came around.

I think it's clear who should've been cast as Voldemort.

Long black hair?

Check.

A freakish and highly disturbing appearance?

Check.

A villain to children everywhere?

Definitely check.

You know who I'm talking about.

David Bowie always gets you bonus Ourchair Points.

+100 Ourchair Points.

You'd get more if it were in reference to David Bowie's Area.

The Harry Potter 6 producers are racist!

If you'll recall, her part was already cast, and was played by an African-American girl.

She should be really pissed off right now. The executives totally wanted to avoid having millions of little kids see *gasp!* an interracial relationship on the big screen.

-500 points for the Potter franchise

I think in the book, she was a black girl, too.

That's ****ed up. Like. . .really ****ed up.

It's not ****ed up in any way shape or form, and no, Jennifer Smith should not be pissed off at all.

Jennifer Smith ISN'T AN ACTRESS. She got the "part" of Lavender Brown in Prizoner of Azkaban because it required no lines and less than two shots(literally) of screentime, and thus could go to any fan who wanted a cameo in the movie. The POA movie was made before the release of Half-Blood Prince they didn't know Lavender would become a prominent enough part in later books to require an actual actress to play her.

Since Half-Blood Prince came out, the plan(as they've revealed in plenty of DVD features on Goblet of Fire) has always been to do a proper casting call and have Rupert Grint present to read with the girl and see who can both act and have romantic chemistry with him, regardless of her race, which they have now done and ended up with Jessie Cave, an actual actress.

Jennifer Smith shouldn't be pissed, she should thank her lucky stars she got to appear in one of the Harry Potter movies out of the sheer luck that it was made before HBP came out, because they never would have cast her otherwise. This has nothing to do with racism. It has to do with professional movie-making.

Oh, and..
I think in the book, she was a black girl, too.

Never mentions it one way or the other.

Well, that's why I was upset. I could have sworn that they said that in in the books, but maybe I was thinking of someone else. Angelina Johnson, maybe? I know there was a black girl or two specifically mentioned in the books.

Still, the inconsistency between the movies is there. Sure, maybe Jennifer Smith shouldn't have been cast again, but how do you explain a black girl becoming a white girl? It's kind of ridiculous.

Obviously, she's insecure and got a skin change via magic.

Probably.

She was in two shots, wasn't referred to by name, had no lines. The only reason I knew about her was because I happened to see the name in the credits the 2nd or 3rd time I watched the film and thought "when the heck was Lavender there?". I still couldn't find her the next time I watched it and had to go on IMDb to find where Jennifer Smith appears in the movie.

If no black girl showed up who could act as well as or had as good chemistry as this girl Cave, there's no way the entire film should suffer because of a miniscule inconsistency 3 films back due that a die-hard Harry Potter fan was lucky to notice.

And Dumbledore's being played by a completely different actor now! Gah!

That's a little different. Or did you expect them to resurrect Richard Harris?

She was never mentioned one way or another, in my mind's eye she was white.

Planetman has this completely correct

I suppose that's why I have a problem with it. In my mind's eye, she's always been black.

She should be lucky they even let a black person on the set.

That horrible joke aside, I hate it when they break continuity, your telling me there's not one black actress who can do the part?
