Fables series discussion (spoilers)

And just finished Volume 3. Once I got passed the first issue, the rest was enjoyable. I also liked #18, the history/story behind Smalltown and all. Especially the joke on on Smallville ("I voted for Smallville, but they thought it was dumb.") and the little (no pun intended) nod at Paste Pot Pete, "Mustard Pot Pete." Hehe.

It was crazy to see Bluebeard and Goldilocks get killed. And then Goldilocks not dying and still getting hurt over and over and over. Damn. And seeing Prince Charming becoming more caniving (sp?) than a slob is quite interesting.

Can't wait to read more.

The next trade, March of the Wooden Soldiers, is widely considered the best of the series.

So you have that to look forward to.

Although The Last Castle is one of my least-favorite Fables comics, with the worst art.

Everything through March of the Wooden Soldiers is great, some of the best comics I ever read.

The art on Last Castle was so bad, though.

Jack is a better supporting character than a leading man.

I agree. I still enjoy Jack of Fables, though. Not so much for Jack, but for how absolute off-the-wall it is. The concepts in that book are just. . .bizarre.

I loved Last Castle.

And loved Wooden Soldiers, but my favorite has to be the Mean Seasons.

Completely agreed.

The last issue of Jack was one of the best. I like the stories that take place in the past in America (not necessarily in the Homelands). Fables is supposed to be about these magic characters in the real world, but it hasn't been about that for some years really, so it's nice when it gets back to it.

I agree with everything. Except for the enjoying Jack of Fables bit. I dropped that a long time ago.

You should read the last two issues.

One was about the Pathetic Fallacy staging a play for the Golden Boughs group and Jack isn't in it at all, and the last issue is about Jack as a criminal in the Old West and Bigby tracking him down.

The last issue was pretty epic. Fabletown has a pretty good plan. Stupid dragons.

#75 is 64 pages long. And it's going to change the status-quo. I have no idea what's going to happen, but I'm sure it'll be ****ing exciting.

This is one of those books where I actually believe speeches like that. I think this book WILL change drastically, and permanently too. I have absolutely no idea where it's going, though I have a feeling we're going to leave Fabletown behind. Either that, or the Fables become publicly known as the 'Emperor' invades the mundy world.

I have no idea, and I love it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the war with the Empire is followed by a war between Fabletown and forces in the Mundy world. But that's really just rampant speculation.

Either way, I agree. Fables is great because it's so self-contained and all the creative control is in Willingham's hands, so he really can enact changes that are dramatic and lasting.

I wonder if there'll be a new Emperor. Maybe one of the Fabletown peoples.

I just finished The Good Prince TPB, and really everything was close to perfect. I particularly loved how the wooden soldiers were dealt with and Frau Totenkinder continues to be in my top five favorite characters because of her sheer awesomisity. I also really liked the cubs birthday issue, and I thought the art change fit the story really well. I can also see why some of you were getting bored with the lack of focus on Fabletown, but it's not a big problem when reading all of it at once.

As great as the trqde was, I feel way to comfortable with how the struggle is now almost entirely balanced towards the Fables after The Frog Prince's moves. It's almost anticlimatic.

Blue's invasion of the homeworlds is still my favorite. I wonder if there will be any ramifications of Fabletown's knowledge of the zephyr cub when one of the cubs rats it out. 5 years old, trustworthy? Come on.

This had me excited when I read it, and it only took my a half hour to read.

This also has me worried about the Fables, the Emperor will eventually realize he's going to need to change how he plans on fighting this war, and once he does, I fear what he's going to do with the fables.
