Fables series discussion (spoilers)

Originally he said he had an ending in mind but that was far off, now he says that this is all a part of that original ending, but he's definitely going to keep writing it.

I've read interviews with BW where he says that the series and characters are heading for a big paradigm shift that will open up a whole mess of story possibilities, not to mention all kinds of other characters he's still looking into introducing. So yeah, this'll be around for a while. :D

I remember him saying back in the day that he had the general story mapped out from the beginning to the end, with all the major beats in between, but that most of the space between the beats, and the length of the story overall, is still entirely mutable.

I could have sworn that around the time issue 50 was coming around, Willingham said that it wrapped up the first of three rough movements that are supposed to make up the overall Fables story.

But all that's from memory. I don't have any quotes to back it up.

Okay, so these past two issues have done a really great job shaking things up... Like, seriously, the war has started?! Wasn't expecting that for another arc at least...

It looks like this is picking back up the energy it lost during the good, but too long "The Good Prince" arc (which reads SO much better in one sitting).

Cinderella is the secret Hero of the Fables Universe.

So is Prince Charming. Prince Charming kicks so much ***.

I wish I would have been around to start collecting this in single-issues when it first started...The wait for new TPB-formats makes me want to kill myself. (Particularly because I can't help myself from being spoiled.)

I've been wondering lately, how far do we think the "Fablesverse" extends? We've seen characters from the Emerald City (Wizard of Oz) pop up, and I never considered them "fairy tale" characters, folklore icons, etc. We've seen the Lilliputians - from Gulliver's Travels, I believe, and some others that I can't think of at the moment. So, I guess what I'm getting at is - how deep into the depths of "literary fantasy" does Fables delve? Is it a more wide-ranged form of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?

This is a very good point.

I have wondered this also.

He's only covered the American, Europe, and some of Arabian fables.

What about everything else?

Basically, the idea is, any character who's entered public domain is open game.

Really now? I wasn't aware of that. That makes a lot of sense, though. Thanks to you, Up Worlder. You have showered us with great kindness as of late.

Well, I think that the eastern Fables have been mentioned before, but I imagine that anything fantasy, and public is fair game.

Yeah. Peter Pan was originally supposed to be the big bad, but since he's not public domain, plans were changed.

I don't know how far you are into Fables, but a little ways in, we get a good look at the Arabian equivalent of Fabletown, and Jack of Fables introduces a number of American fables like Paul Bunyan and Little Black Sambo. Oh, and India.... 'cuz, Mowgli and Sher Khan

I remember reading an interview that it was the Europe type that have been mentioned. I assumed that the older ones started there with the Brother Grimm tales.

I've gotten to all of the TPBs and both Jack TPBs as well. The latest arc - The Good Prince - I haven't read anything of. I just think it's interesting that, although we originally begin with true fable characters, we're slowly starting to stretch beyond that and start to see more fantasy characters.

Really, I'm sort of afraid that we're going to end up with some ridiculous characters popping up, just 'cause they're available.

Well he started with the Grimm tales because of their familiarity to American audiences, and I don't think that anything too new is going to pop up soon, but eastern and African tales are available if he ever runs into a rut.

With the already large cast, I'd doubt it. Maybe for Jack of Fables though...

I read my last post and I feel like I made it sound that I'm discrediting Willingham, which is the last thing I want to do. He's got a brilliant idea and manages to write wonderfully.

I'm pretty sure anything goes in Jack of Fables. Some of that stuff is just...out there. However, Humpty Dumpty is probably my favorite Fables character of all time.

I read #11 from the volume 3 TPB.

It was the Jack during the Civil War issue and the magic bag and all issue. I didn't like it very much, and at one point I was wondering when the issue would end already.

One thing I did like was that Death liked being let in the bag for a day so he could rest and everything else stayed alive. I knew that would happen, but it was still good.

On towards the rest of the issues, 12-18!!!

The rest of it is great.

The art in the jack civil war issue is weird. I remember feeling iffy about that one as well.

Not sure how you'd feel about Jack of Fables then. But, then again, that book is rather polarizing anyways unlike the generally praised Fables.
