Fables series discussion (spoilers)

Was there a new issue recently? I'm out of the loop until next trade.

Yeah, Flycatcher has established his sanctuary in the middle of the Empire and there's going to be a massive war.

Good issue. I love how upfront and casual Willingham is with huge plot points. Fly offhandedly reveals the whole reason for making Haven and effortlessly deals with Shere Khan and Bluebeard. Almost any other writer would have dramatically built these things up and used it for a cheap last page reveal. I wish more writers were as mature and unwilling to whore their ideas out as Willingham is.

So the massive war at Flycatcher's has begun....kinda. And it's more strategic than expected.

Fly meets the General in the middle of the field and explains to them that their battle here is a losing one. That no magic will work on Fly's land unless he allows it. And that the Empire's army will be slowly whittled down to nothing since all Fly's army is comprised of ghosts. They'll be killed....only to be resurrected instantly....and then slowly cut their way thru the Empire's all to real army.

So Fly issues a challenge. Champion vs. Champion. Fly does battle with a giant ogre but doesn't kill him. Instead he shames his opponent knowing that defeat will end in death for the giant when he returns to the Empire. So the giant ogre instead decides to come over to Fly's side.

The General decides that this doesn't sit well with him and instead of honoring the previous agreement of the champion battle----the EMpire will continue to march on Fly's camp.

So Fly expected this and in turn has released his army to their natural ghoul state to attack the army.

End issue.

I cannot properly put into words how much I love this book. All I want to do is go around and ask people if they read it. And when they say yes....I just wanna hug them or ask for a "Fables FTW Hi-Five!". And when they say no......I wanna punch them in the face and shove the book in their face and scream "REEEEEAAAAAAD IT!".

I have read the first two volumes.

Brilliant. Nothing short of brilliant.

I read the first volume last Sunday. To me, it wasn't dull or whatever as most people say the first arc is. I thought it was great. I loved Bigby, which I'm told everyone does. And I can see why. He was the best written character. I loved reading about all the classic fable characters. Having them in a modern time was something I didn't expect to be honest. But it's great. It really is.

Learning about how Prince Charming is one damn womanizer is something I never thought of, but it just makes so much sense here. Snow White is cool. I have to be honest in which the only Rose Red I've heard of is Stephen's King novel which was made into a TV mini-series. The mystery of who killed Rose Red sure had me guessing and wanting to see the who, what, and why. And it didn't dissapoint.

Although it makes me wonder, that the contract with Bluebeard and Rose Red was null and void when he mentioned it to Bigby and Snow, could it have been worthless if Rose Red mentioned it to someone, too?

Then I read volume 2 the morning afterwords. I finished that baby before leaving for work. I couldn't put it down, not even when I went to use the bathroom, heh. The second volume was a hellavulot better than the first, hands down.

The animal revolution was an incredible read, and it had great comical moments. Little boy Blue is a superb supporting character, I think, and when he, Bluebeard, the monkey, and Prince Charming went to rescue the others...hilarious.

The characterizations of all the fables is really enjoyable. The pigs, the rooster (made me laugh every time), fox, everyone. It was great seeing the fox hitting on Snow White, too. Ha!

I honestly thought that Snow White was going to die or not be dealt with for a very long time when she was shot in the head. I'm glad she isn't. It's going to be intresting in seeing what happens to Goldilocks later on (NO ONE SPOIL ANYTHING, NO MENTION WHATSOEVER). I think Rose Red in charge of the farm is a great idea myself. She really does have the attitude to be in charge there (not that Smith didn't) where she'll fight back and kick your ***.

Reading the rest is going to be so much awesome that even Barney would be astounded.

I don't think I've ever seen a person NOT like Fables. :D

Wow. Just wow.

I mean seriously.

This was the most perfect ending to an AMAZING arc. "The Good Prince" (albeit a bit long) has to be my favorite arc thus far.

I think the ending tied itself off in a way I didn't think was going to be possible.

Kudos. Where does the series go from here?

I loved this arc, but it's the perfect example of a problem the series has. I never get a feeling that the characters are in any danger. It seems like in every arc I just know they're going to be fine. Which is okay, I guess, I love the characters and want them to be fine, and it's nice to know they can get out of anything, it's comforting, but back in the old days of Fables there was actual drama and suspense that I feel is lacking now.

I get the feeling that might change, with war coming.

Continuing a topic raised in the "DC to Marvel/Jumping Ship" thread...

Can somebody verify how long Fables is supposed to last?

Because i'm certain that i've read reviews of the final part of the "Good Prince" storyline which suggest that it's ending within the next 12 months.

And i've always remembered Willingham stating that it was meant to run until #75, though I don't have a specific citation to back that up.

EDIT
There's a whole thread at the CBR boards dedicated to this subject, but nobody has any kind of authoritative consensus:
http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=194686

Does anybody have some conclusive evidence?

I've read articles in which Willingham said he'd write it as long as people bought it.

Just can't seem to find them now.

And here is the Article

A fan asked Willingham if he had an ending planned for Fables. Willingham said the story was open-ended and he wasn't working toward a specific last issue.
