Captain America Movie

Yeah, if anything the Nomad years are exactly the OPPOSITE of what you are using them as a model for. Cap wasn't running around saying AMERICA CAN DO NO WRONG! like 1610 Steve did with Fury. 616 Cap is about making the right decision for freedom. In the 40's that was joining the war; to him in the 80's, he wasn't feeling it and felt the need to become Nomad; In Civil War this guided the stance he took. 616 Cap and 1610 Cap are completely different. Miles apart.

I think you misunderstood my post or maybe I didn't clarify. I was just stating the importance of character development. and what is 1610?

I still feel the best Cap is Mark Millar's Ultimate Cap.

I like that Cap is conservative and patriotic, yet smart and fair. I felt Millar got the balance right of him being all the good things that the right-wing is supposed to represent.

I think this is more about trying to make sure that people who aren't white Americans don't think the movie will be propaganda. I'm certain they're worried about how this movie will be received in France, Germany, the Middle East, and even in certain areas of America. That's all this is about; they're trying to pre-empt the very obvious backlash that'll happen when this starts getting into gear as people claim is jingoist, racist, claptrap.

I think though, from this snippet, they'll probably over-react and have him be 'sympathetic and tolerant', or rather, a gorram *****. I've always felt Captain America isn't Superman who's all kind and motherly, and really concerned and compassionate, but rather, he's the kind of guy who'd say, "I don't care what you think, or what side you're on. I'm too busy saving our country to listen."

Another way to put it; he'd support the war in Iraq but would never, ever, be on the O'Reilly Factor.

Your quote implied that he was the jingoistic Ultimate (Universe 1610) Cap when he was doing all that Nomad stuff which I argued was quite the opposite. I argue that Cap from 616 and even Cap in the 40s but especially cap since his Stan Lee revival in the 60's are miles and miles apart. And where they may be overlaps in 616 and Ultimate caps reactions, Cap would leave the name America behind because he no longer thought America was looking after its people or it was oppressing their rights; Ultimate Cap would leave because they let gay people marry or Mexicans cross the border. Big differences.

I think that's true of Ultimate Cap. I don't think that has been true of 616 Cap since the 60s or before. Otherwise I agree with you completely.

I would disagree with ult (1610 i get it now) Cap leave his position due to his stance on gay marriage which I don't know off-hand that his stance on the topic was ever stated. I don't think he was explored intimately enough for the reader to instinctively make that connection. Same with Mexicans crossing the border. I would agree with the example of 616 Cap because he's disowned the gov't for those very reasons you stated.

This is what I was implying the whole time. I think the beginning of my nomad sentence threw you off. I do that to people. my bad.

Those were intended to be somewhat hyperbolic examples based off what I think was pretty clearly his political inclination. Was it ever stated he would take offense to those things or have such a reaction as to quit? No, but I was just pointing out the difference between the two in terms of what would grind their gears.

It sounds like they're just trying to avoid controversy, which is perfectly understandable. You make Captain America overly patriotic and you alienate international audiences, you have him question too much and you turn a fun superhero movie into a political argument. They're trying to land somewhere in between. It's fine. I don't know what about those quotes makes people think the movie is being co-opted by LIBERAL HOLLYWOOD.

"Well, we were having some trouble with the script so we had President Obama come in and do some rewrites and he just brought some wonderful ideas to the table. I would never have thought to make Steve Rogers a biracial gay abortionist or to make the Red Skull a metaphor for climate change but you know, that's why we have such great minds collaborating on this project."

Well if that's how it turns out, I'm grabbing my shotgun, my pocket constitution and my God-given rights and I'm coming after you, hippie. Btw, where have you been?

COME AND GET ME.
Btw, where have you been?
Out in the wilds of the internet and the real world, doing all kinds of gay things.

Skotti mentioned this thread on tweeter and I came to see what was happening and I felt depressed that I haven't posted here in ages and now I'm kind of thinking of making a comeback. MAYBE.

Oh ****... I'm sorry guys... I didn't know he'd come back. T_T

The director never said he wasn't going to be a patriot or love America. He did say he wasn't going to feel comfortable as a symbol. He's not SO over the top patriotic that he just fits into the role right off the bat and is automatically a role model. He has to grow into it.

At least that was my interpretation.

That actually does make some sense since he started out as a frail little teenager.
