All-Star Superman Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

  • The Lois with super powers issue was an homage to the classic sliver age plot device of "One of superman's friends gets powered". In addition it lead to tipping us off that Superman definatly won't die at the end. How does it do that? The Superman Dead headline had a byline by Clark Kent.
  • Okay, if you didn't like the Dino-Czar you really don't have a soul. Its not like they lived in the city, it was an invasion from dino-men that live near the earths core. If Mum-Rah had sent them you'd have eaten it up.
  • It was a Sphinx actually and not random at all. Earlier in the issue it had been set up that Samson (Or atlas, its been a bit) had stolen the jewels that he gave Lois from the Sphinx, and paid tribute to the classic Riddle of the Sphinx myth, having Superman solve a Super Version.
  • Yeah, Jimmy dressed as a woman was just funny man.

Arguments countered.

Plus, Jimmy in drag is a throwback to the three or four different Golden Age (or maybe Silver Age) plots that involved him dressing up like a woman. Seriously, it was a little disturbing how often that happened. You sort of have to wonder about that boy...

Between that and the elastic lad serum (Tucked under? What do you mean tucked under?) he could have really messed some people up in th head.

That's cool , Like i said if everyone here likes it cool. I didn't like those two issues , oh well

I just want to say Lois with super powers to me is as lame as M.J goblin.

I don't think I could actually explain why it feels different. I guess it's the difference between Spider-Man and Superman... maybe it's because Lois has always been Superman's girlfriend, right there in the thick of things from the beginning, but Spider-Man's dual life is one of the most distinct things about the series? Can someone smarter than me make one of UC's trademark megaposts analyzing the themes of the series and the characters to explain the difference to SSJ?

I know the differences I just said as storyline , plot device what ever it was as lame as M.J Goblin to me

For anyone on the fence about picking up the first hardcover which came out last week - GET IT. It is absolutely gorgeous and having 6 of the best comics published in the last 5 years (or more) is incredible. GN of the year, right here baby.

I looked for it today when buying Slaugtherhouse Five, but they'd sold it out. Probably for the best, as I can get it from my LCS.

Baxter hit it right on the head. They are brilliant tributes to the awful Silver Age stories...they are almost parodies. I love them.

I can't wait till the Absolute it. It'll be so nice.

That's going to be awesome.

All Star Batman or All Star Superman?

Answer carefully. My finger hovers over the ban button.

Ok....now I'm gonna just say it. I'm sure infractions will follow.....

You are ****ing crazy! Get off this site right now! I mean it. PM E or Ice and tell them to delete your account and then log off. Never to return. Between DC/Thundercats crossover, refusal to read Watchmen, a myriad of other things, and now you think AS Superman is just 3 outta 5!?!?!? It's just too much. Why do you NOT like good things? I don't understand how you're brain works!?!?!?!

23 pages of people basically willing to suck Grant Morrison off in return for more issues more often and you come at us with this trite. I hope Grant Morrison kills you. And I hope its a slow painful death.
That's just uncalled for. You know better yet you still went ahead?

Will you tell me off the same? I don't even get this because I'm not interested. It doesn't look interesting whatsoever to me. At least he likes it, you know.

I know the differences I just said as storyline , plot device what ever it was as lame as M.J Goblin to me

By that logic, Darth Vader trying to destroy the rebellion is the same as Jim Shooter wanting the pro golf Golden jacket - it's the same plot device; the villain wants something.

The difference is in what plot the 'plot device' creates.

In the MJ Goblin storyline, MJ is given super powers in an attempt to create a chaotic science-gone-wrong atmosphere that will completely unravel Spidey's life, but in turn, will be the precise thing he needs to rebuild and improve his life. In that story, MJ getting powers is a device used to destroy more and more of Spidey's life.

In the Superman storyline, Lois is given super powers by Superman as a special birthday present, to essentially, give her the keys to his porsche, he's letting her be with him for a single day because Superman is dying and he wants one perfect day with her. Hijinks ensue (but you'll note, Lois doesn't actually do anything in the story, she's not an antagonist nor protagonist, she's actually the 'prize' of the story) which seemingly threaten his one perfect day, but in the end he not only gets his perfect present, but the promise of a healthy future. In that story, Lois getting powers is a device used to give Superman one perfect day.

Same convention. Different plot device.

I know the difference Bass. I didn't mean they were same just Equal levels of lame.

Not the same but as lame. Dose that explain what I meant more?

Edit : "Not the same but as lame. Dose that explain" Oh god I've become Dr. Seuss

Well... look, you said they were the same plot device and thus, equally lame. I'm pointing out that they are not the same plot device except on the most shallow of levels - if you find them equally lame, that's okay, but they can't be equally lame because 'they're the same' because that's not a particularly accurate statement.

But yes, but I get you find them equally lame. It hurts my brain, but I get it.

Just finished issues 5+6 , Theses were pretty cool. 5 a little more than 6 (Only beacuse I've never liked Krypto) but 5 with Lex talking to Clark about why he hates Superman was great.

I love the fact Lex likes Clark but hates Superman in it. "Your everything he's not" Brilliant.

All in all adding up 1-6 so far it's gone from 3 out 5 up to a 4.5 out of 5. I felt 5+6 greatly made up for 3+4. Will look to get 7 later

Should I get the hardcover or wait till Morrison's done when they put it all into an Absolute?

I'm getting the issues, and I'm waiting for the Absolute

I'm doing that too, but I also picked up the 1st hardcover.

I'm so Grant Morrison's *****.

It's nothing to be ashamed of. His accent is very charming.

Yeah...I bought the issues hardcover and plan on buying the absolute too.
