Your 5 Favorite Films of 2007 -- Update As You Go

1. Ratatouille - 9.9/10 - Best movie of the year thusfar... The .1 is knocked off because of the beginning which was a bit weaker than the rest of the film, but the second we got Remy talking to Gusteau and introduced Linguini, the film turned to solid gold. It is going to be hard as HELL to outrank this movie this year.

2. Knocked Up - 9/10 - Best comedy i've seen in a long while.

3. Sicko - 8.75/10 - Sicko is an important movie, especially if you're an American... Actually, it might only be an important film if you are an American... But if you are, this movie is equally as important a film as An Inconvenient Truth was last year. This movie is about how our country's healthcare system PALES in comparison to EVERY OTHER Western Country... This is an issue that we should make central in 2008... So, yeah. See it if you are American, if not, its not going to mean all that much. (which i deducted .25 for... the other point off is from the films various flaws, but its still a damn good movie)

4. Zodiac - 8.5/10 - Well constructed, but a bit longer than necessary. The acting was fantastic though, probably the best I've seen so far this year.

5. Hot Fuzz - 8.5/10 - Fun, Funny, Action-packed. Also: Timothy Dalton is fantastic, and I now want to write movies where I can make him the bad guy.

6. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 8.5/10 - The pacing was off for about the first third of the film, and Bellatrix Lestrange was exaggerated into rediculousness... but the feel and the look of the film outdid ANYTHING in the previous movies... By deciding to adapt the book as it should be adapted rather than as defined by the previous movie, we get the best film yet in the series... One that feels like it tells a complete story. And Sirius was awesome... Gary Oldman was simply the most perfect choice for that role.

7.Hairspray - 8.5/10 - Fun, Funny, and put me in a great mood... I love the music, Cyclops rocked as Corny Collins, and even though Zac Efron has soulless demon eyes, it was nice to see that he could sing without them splicing someone else's voice into his. Also: Amanda Bynes was adorable

8. Bridge to Terabithia - 8.5/10 - Most heartwarming story i've seen all year, based on my favorite book in Middle School

9. The Simpsons Movie - 8/10 - A fun, and suprisingly good escapade with the Simpsons family... I was laughing through the whole thing, but at the end of the day it just felt like a long, high quality episode of the Simpsons, and didn't do much to be something more than that... So it gets a pretty high rating from sheer enjoyability, but not all that much substance.

10. Grindhouse - 8/10 - Lots of fun, it has its weak points, but the sheer enjoyability of Planet Terror, and the newest Tarantino film (which includes what I now consider to be the greatest chase sequence of ALL time)... Death Proof is simply brilliant. I'll see it again if it hits the theaters on its lonesome.

11. Ocean's 13 - 8/10 - Its not quite the quality of the first one... But it's ALMOST up there... The first half of the movie I was really anxious, because it took a WHILE to get going... But when it picked up, it really picked up and I enjoyed the hell out of it... Clooney and Pitt's relationship gives this an extra point, but I might knock it down later in the year.

12. 1408 - 8/10 - Cusack did a damn good job in the movie, without losing his usual Cusackian Charm... My biggest problem with it all is the fact that they never really explain WHY the room was evil. It just was. But a good movie, quite enjoyable.

13. Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End - 8/10 - Satisfying ending to a well executed trilogy. I enjoyed the hell out of it, and I'll happily dish out the money for the next film on the list.

14. Tranformers - 7/10 - Your typical fun summer action popcorn flick. Good Characters, Lots of Fun action, but not much substance.

15. 300 - 7/10 - Fun. Good. But the scenes in sparta interspersed with the narrative slows the story... I need to see it again (for the fourth time), but I'm pretty sure that this is where I stand on it. Mostly Good.

16. Shrek 3 - 7/10 - Solid Enough... Not as much heart as the first, Not as much funny as the second, but still a the end of the day it was an enjoyable solid movie with fantastic CGI... There's this bit with The Gingerbread Man's life flashing before his eyes that still makes me laugh just thinking about it. Not great, Not Bad. Certainly better than I expected.

17. Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer - 7/10 - Had a lot of the flaws of the first, but rectified several of them... Johnny Storm continues to be the strongest aspect of the series, which I absolutely hope continues... My biggest Problem is with Mr. Fantastic, cuz, well... he should seem intelligent.

18. Spider-Man 3 - 6/10 - The most disapointing film experience I've had all year. This made me cringe so much with what they messed up that every time something decent happened it was ruined by the inconsistency of it all... The good parts simply showed that this COULD have been good. But they opted against it, apparently...

19. Evan Almighty - 5/10 - It had heart, but no real discernable message, and poor usage of Wanda Sykes, who I think can be fantastic when she's got a good script. I'm glad I saw it once, but doubt i'll ever see it again.

20. Ghost Rider - 4/10 - This movie made me want to make my own Ghost Rider movie, one that was good.

Movies I Plan to See This Year:
- Stardust - August 10th - I suspect this might be my favorite movie of the year... I love the book, and its been getting fantastic advance reviews
- Wristcutters: A Love Story - August 31st - I <3 Patrick Fugit
- The Nanny Diaries - September 7th - It looks good
- The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - September 21st - the title says it all
- Bee Movie - November 2nd - The bits from the previews I've really enjoyed... Time will tell whether or not its any good
- Fred Claus - November 9th - I love Paul Giamatti, and him playing Santa Claus is just fantastic. I hope its not crap.
- Beowulf - November 16th - More Neil Gaiman! Woot!
- Enchanted - November 21st - The first Disney movie i've been excited about in AGES... Looks funny and charming and it might be the dawn of a new era for Disney
- The Golden Compass - December 7th - one of my favorite book series of all time... plus GREAT casting
- I Am Legend - December 14th - I love Will Smith movies, and I don't care who knows about it.
- National Treasure: The Book of Secrets - December 21st - enjoyed the first one enough
- Sweeney Todd - December 21st - Please God, don't suck. Sweeney is one of my alltime favorite musicals, and I might die if Burton doesnt do it justice.
- Charlie Wilson's War - December 25th - Aaron Sorkin Script. That's all I need to know.

300 (4.5)
The Simpsons Movie (4.5)
Ocean's 13 (4.5)
Knocked Up (4)
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (4)
Grindhouse (4)
1408 (4)
Live Free Or Die Hard (3.5)
Spider-Man 3 (3.5)
Sicko (3.5)
Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End (3)
The Astronaut Farmer (3)
Transformers (3)
Ghost Rider (2.5)
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2.5)
Hostel: Part II (2)

Updated for Sicko.

It got a bonus half point for being Important.

But was otehrwise Moore's weakest film with much of it coming across as a parody of himself, or an extended evrsion of Bart's People.

DIE HARD 4.0 7/10; HOT FUZZ 7/10; 300 7/10; PAN'S LABYRINTH 7/10, ROCKY BALBOA 7/10 - Highly enjoyable films that were extremely entertaining, but I'm unsure as to how good they'll be upon rewatching. That said, DIE HARD 4.0 may be even more manly than 300...

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE 6/10; OCEAN'S THIRTEEN 6/10 - Lots of fun, but somewhat unsatisfying; there's a great build-up to the opening night with lots of brilliant bits, but the actual opening night is rather... unexciting. As for THE SIMPSONS MOVIE; much better than I thought it would be and had me laughing all the way through. Sadly, it wasn't fully satisfying, but the animation was great, and it felt good to watch.

WILD HOGS 5/10 - Really quite enjoyable yet stupid too; I've yet to see the end of it, which might make it much better or worse. So far, I'd guess that if I saw the rest it might hit 6, or even 7. It was surprisingly good entertainment.

THE TRANSFORMERS 4/10 - I was amazed to discover that the film turns to crap when Optimus Prime shows up, because that's when the 'plot' appears and all charm goes. Before then, it's HERBIE. And it was lots of fun. Then it became ET with lasers. Whatever. It wasn't as bad as I thought, but it was still nonsensical bollocks. The main problem for me was that the robots were an incoherent mess of CGI and I couldn't tell what was going on half the time. But it was at times quite entertaining.

SPIDER-MAN 3 3/10 - Meh. Some bits were very good, but on the whole, it was piecemeal rubbish like the first two.

GHOST RIDER 1/10 - I couldn't finish it. I had no tolerance for the level of bull**** this film had to give me.

UPDATED FOR A BUNCH OF MOVIES (*):

1. GRINDHOUSE 10/10 I've noticed how those of you who were all jazzed up after seeing it for the first time are ranking it a bit lower in retrospect. I don't know if it's just the bad reception it ended up getting but I don't really understand it. I saw this on opening day and I still get all giddy and adrenaline-ized when I think about it. I seriously love Grindhouse. I wish all the idiots who neglected to see it could be strapped to a chair, "Clockwork Orange" style and be forced to watch it. I'd still say that it might just be the most purely entertaining movie I've ever seen.

*2. HOT FUZZ 9/10 Funniest movie I've seen so far this year. Great cast, great story, great humor, great fun. Everything that I hoped it to be. I can't wait for the next Wright/Pegg/Frost production.

3. TRANSFORMERS 8/10 Everything you could want from a good action film. Explosions, humor, and FIGHTING TRANSFORMING ROBOTS OMG! It was great to be surprised by a movie that I didn't have very high hopes for.

*4. THE SIMPSONS MOVIE 8/10 Surprisingly good. Not as good as the better seasons of the show, but I definitely laughed through the whole movie. It felt like a good, long episode of The Simpsons, and that's good enough.

*5. 300 8/10 Highly enjoyable, but not as much as I expected. Excellent fight scenes and special effects, and definitely a classic "man movie". I only wish I could have seen it in the theater, where I'm sure it was much more enjoyable...

6. PAN'S LABYRINTH 7.5/10 A sweet, sad little fairy tale. Some great and truly creepy special effects and a story that effectively mixes magic with reality. It also had some of the most realistic "violence effects" that I've ever seen in a movie. I didn't know that they could make someone having their face crushed in look that realistic.

7. 28 WEEKS LATER 7.5/10 Tied with Pan's Labyrinth, because even though they're very different movies, I can't tell which one I like better. As I've said before, 28 Days Later was a great film, but 28 Weeks Later was a great zombie film. They did a very effective job of building up the intensity to levels that the original only hit once or twice.

8. HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHEONIX 7.5/10 A good adaptation of the book, which I was properly psyched for since I had started reading Book 7 a day before I saw it. The battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort was excellent.

9. AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE MOVIE FILM INTENDED ONLY FOR THEATERS 7/10 It was decent, but nothing special. Essentially, a pretty funny 90-minute episode of the show. It was probably hurt by the opening sequence (with the heavy-metal movie theater food song), which had me laughing hysterically and set the bar a little too far for the movie to top again.

10. SPIDER-MAN 3 5/10 Disappointing. While I didn't hate it as much as others, and definitely had it's good parts, it didn't even come close to matching Spider-Man 2. The plot was oddly paced and structured, the story was too crowded, and it was just too damn silly for it's own good. It was just too disjointed to feel like a real, full movie. Very disappointing.

11. GHOST RIDER 2/10 Blech. I fell asleep about 45 minutes in. I woke up 15 minutes from the end but decided that I really didn't want to rewind and watch what I missed.

*12. THE HILLS HAVE EYES 2 1/10 Blech times two. My cousin foisted the DVD upon me and I decided to watch it for some reason. Just kind of a boring, gross mess. Though I got a good laugh thinking about how they played this at a theater instead of "The Last Mimzy" accidentally, considering the opening scene, in which a woman has a bloody, mutant baby violently torn out of her. Those poor kids.

I should be seeing Zodiac on DVD sometime soon, so I'll add that when I do.

That's funny. One of my friends went to go see Shooter in theaters and they accidentally started playing The Last Mimzy there. She recalled all of these gangster-type teens yelling, "Yo, this ain't Shooter, this's The Last Mimzy!" I crack up every time I hear that. It's also funny because they don't even show the title to The Last Mimzy until the very end of the movie, so you gotta wonder how they even know what movie they were seeing.

Saw this today , I thought it bad , Original one was good though

Speak ill of the 'Formers and I shall kill you where you stand.

Here's my top five:

5-Spider-Man 3: 7/10- Certainly not the best in the series, but, that being said, it is one heck of a good movie. Venom could have used more screen time, and I could have done without the whole "Sandman really killed your father" subplot (in fact, I could have done without Sandman altogether), but it is still a remarkable achievement and a very enjoyable film.

4-Transformers: 8/10- Very good for what it is. It never pretends to be anything other than an action movie, and in that department it serves well, delivering ample heaps of action adventure, especially in the final forty-five minutes of the movie. Still, I could have done with more personality on the robots- you think with a 140+ minute running time, they could squeezed in a little more character develpment. Still, the special effects are incredible, and Shia Labeouf did a very good job. I still wish we could have seen more of Megatron vs. Optimus Prime, though.

3-Live Free or Die Hard: 8.5/10- All I can say is, I didn't go into this thinking it would be the best Die Hard and, while it certainly wasn't as good as the original, it was still the second best in the series. Over-the-top action, humor, and just the right amount of character moments give this the edge over the rest- oh, and let's not forget what is possibly the most badass villain killing in the history of ever. It still surprises me how good this was.

2- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: 8.5/10- This was probably my favorite book at the time I saw the movie (that position has since been filled by Deathly Hallows), and although they cut out A LOT of stuff, it still managed to fit a surprisingly large amount of material from the book into what is the shortest running time of any of the Harry Potter films so far. That being said, I do wish they had spent a little more time emphasizing the prophecy, and I would really liked for them to have expouned on Neville's history a bit more. Still, these are minor quibbles in a film that is definitely my favorite so far. Oh, and Evann Lynch was the PERFECT Luna Lovegood, and she's probably the reason that this edged out Live Free or Die Hard as the number two spot.

1- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End: 9/10- All I can say is: wow. This special effects- laden action adventure love story fantasy pirate movie blows the rest of the competition out of the water. Not only is Johnny Depp's acting superb, but the movie itself is as fun and freaky as he is. With an ending that actually manages to wrap up all of the loose ends of the series, the appearance of Jack's dad, and the whirlpool ship battle at the end, this is a fantastic summer movie that is even better than it's predecesors, if that's even possible. Kudos to the creators, writers, directors, and actors of this film for giving us a fitting end to a fantastic trilogy.

This list will probably change if I ever get around to seeing Ratatouille, and will almost certainly change when I see Stardust (which I plan to do this weekend, if time permits). All in all, it's been a really great year for movies, and I'm glad I got to see the ones mentioned above on the "big screen."

11. Stardust - 8/10 - I love the book so much that this movie could NEVER satisfy what I wanted (a word for word adaptation, including the depressing epilogue), but the more I think about it, the more I think that I need to see it again, because at the end of the movie I was very pleased with it, despite all the things I think it got wrong. It isn't the book, and I think the book is better, but its still a ****ing fantastic movie.

11. Ocean's 13 - 8/10 - Its not quite the quality of the first one... But it's ALMOST up there... The first half of the movie I was really anxious, because it took a WHILE to get going... 21. Bratz - 1/10 - One Point for being so bad that I could sit through the whole thing, laughing my *** off at the terrible acting and absolute lack of plot and anything worthwhile

Movies I Plan to See This Year:
- Wristcutters: A Love Story - August 31st - I <3 Patrick Fugit
- The Nanny Diaries - September 7th - It looks good

Why did you even pay money for that?

friends birthday. Sometimes its fun to see awful movies that are teaching our children terrible things. We went to see Sleepover in theaters too (which had worse messages than Bratz, but at least had a coherent plot).

I just got back from this and it was a ****ing fantastic movie.

I personally liked this ending more than the book and thought the movie was much better.

The actors were great. The actresses were beautiful. Especially the Star. She was great.

Such a good movie. Easy one of the best this year.

No 300? No HOT FUZZ?

All in all, it's been a really great year for movies, and I'm glad I got to see the ones mentioned above on the "big screen."

What's STARDUST?

And RATATOUILLE will probably destroy all our top fives! ;)

I find it weird when people say that, because I think Venom was the throwaway villain.

He was the the throwaway villain , BUT shouldn't of been , I love Spider-man but with just 30 mixtures-1hr extra they could of fitted every villain more.

Also Venom (loved seeing him) BUT they could of done the church ect.... then at end of film Peter makes a comment "Yeah , I wasn't my self in that suit , Thank god it's gone now and wont hurt anymore people" or something.

THEN cut to church scene and added "1 hr ago" or something in subtitles show Eddie inside and get suit , turn to venom , then do that roar thing when he first transformed in film and BOOM credits hit and we are all like "We have to see 4"

The studio does a 4th film like they will anyway but now it's been built up perfectly , 4th film do things like in the comic for a while e.g just see a black hand push peter in front of a train , Peter can then give speech on how he didn't feel any danger like normal thus his spidey sense is not working on him.

Also some more explaining on the fact it copied Peter's powers and you know actually name Venom (I think he was the only one who wasn't named) and the film = darker and a perfect venom enemy film.

Still was a cool film though.

What's STARDUST?

A movie based off a novel by Neil Gaiman.

It's your classic young boy goes on a wild adventure.

It stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Phiefer, and some others I don't remember.

One fateful night, Tristran Thorn promises the most beautiful girl in the rural, English village of Wall, Victoria Forester, that he will retrieve a fallen star for her from beyond the wall that borders their village and separates it from the Faerie realm. Tristran bravely sets out to fetch the fallen star and therefore win the hand of his love, along the way encountering witches, faeries, and unimaginable creatures.
