Ultimate Spider-Man: Death of a Goblin (#112-117) (Spoilers)

Re: IGN.com's preview of Ultimate Spider-Man #114

Hot **** for real.

Love Immonen's art. Love it. And MJ's reaction to the news was just perfect. Now granted it kinda contadicts how she's acted before with this news---but it works here.

And I'm not too familiar with Miles Warren's character....but I like how the seeds of distrust are planted with his "happy coincidence".

I believe he was Harry's psychologist back in issue 22 or 23. And in the 616 universe he's the Jackle, Dr. Miles Warren was a professor of Peter Park and Gwen Stacy at ESU, who also worked with Osborn to destroy Peter Parker after Gwen's Death. He blamed Peter Parker and Spider-Man for Gwen Stacy dieng. Because he was obsessed with Gwen and he created the clones in that reality.

Good good.

Immonen is gradually beginning to give the characters passable facial expressions, though Bagley is still miles, kilomiles, and gigamiles ahead of him in this department.

Nice little moment with MJ's mother. And no, Miles could not look any creepier even if he had bits of human flesh stuck between his teeth.

Really?

Really?

I don't log on for almost a full afternoon and no one has commented on this issue yet?

Ok....fine. Leave it to Doom.

Not a bad issue. Nowhere near the awesome that #113 had showcasing Norman. But for a mid-arc issue where the big twist usually comes....it did not disappoint.

The writing for the characters was quick and to the point. Almost a generalization of the character as opposed to the detailed life history expose we've been getting before. It was almost as if they were getting back to basics.

Spiderman quipped the entire time. Almost the entire time.

Which isn't a bad thing. Just slightly unusual in this book that's been having him freak out for the past 2 years.

Storywise---it was ok. Peter hears the news...reacts by telling MJ and May to hide. He goes after Osborne and the first place he checks is Norman's old penthouse. Norman isn't there. Electro is. Electro gets pissed and a big fight ensues. The fight lasts the rest of the issue. SHIELD shows up and takes down Electro and Spiderman. Peter is knocked out and wakes up behind the same kinda cell Osborn was. The end.

See? Big twist?

Immonen's art is really making me love this book. Bendis's writing is good. But Immonen's art is the affirmation. It's like when you like a girl but you know there's something about her that makes you hold back from really going for it. But then your friend tells you she's bonafied and that you should totally go for it.

Something like that.

3.5/5 Nothing too special....but I really enjoyed the issue. Maybe it would've been better with mustard?

I find that Doom is incorrect. As is now typical for USM, it had pretty art, but everything else was disappointing.

Re: Ultimate Spider-Man #114 Discussion (With spoilers aye)

I could've swore that we had this long talk beofre about how we were just gonna post issue discussions in the preview threads?

Meh.

Re: Ultimate Spider-Man #114 Discussion (With spoilers aye)

Does it really matter? I'll answer that. No.

Just discuss the comic.

Re: Ultimate Spider-Man #114 Discussion (With spoilers aye)

Spider-Man, you moron. They're going to shoot at you. They always shoot at you. Either run away or cooperate.

Yeah but these are S.H.I.E.L.D agents who work for Fury... So why would Spidey think they were going to shot him. I mean after the whole Clone arc. it seemed like Spidey and Fury had an understanding...

Re: Ultimate Spider-Man #114 Discussion (With spoilers aye)

What makes you think that they were actually SHIELD?

Granted, I'd have to go back and read it again to double check that there was any kind of confirmation...but they could just be Osborne mercs.

Well for one thing the uniforms, those are S.H.I.E.L.D. issue uniforms... if you look at the pannal just after the one were spidey wacks Electro with the tire. You can see on one of the arms of the agents, the S.H.I.E.L.D Symbol and secendly then theres the cell Peter's in. It looks just like the one Osborn was in. Not to mention Danvers is a contral freak and arresting spidey with out cause would be so something she would do...

He was flipping around Manhattan fighting naked electric guy and giving naked electric guy a chance to escape when SHIELD had had (yes, the double had is intentional and makes grammatical sense) a clear shot with a tranquilizer or even an actual bullet. Yeah, he probably didn't think things through and realize that obviously SHIELD would be watching Osborn's apartment, but that doesn't change the fact that he could've messed everything up. Is Danvers a control freak if she doesn't want this super-powered, idiotic variable running around while she's desperately trying to fix everything? Is it still being a control freak if being out of control means innocent people dying? And maybe she just wanted to talk to him and the SHIELD agents were being overzealous. He should've made his decision to run away or to quietly talk to them, not stay there and yell while halfheartedly fighting.

There were so many better things he could've done. If he wanted to know what SHIELD was doing, seeing Electro there would be the best opportunity to see if SHIELD is there (by waiting to see if agents would try to grab him). From there, you could... I don't know... follow the agents, ignore them and check out more leads on Osborn, go in the open and try to talk to them... Peter is supposed to be smart. He's not. Immature? I'm younger than he's supposed to be. He's just stupid.

this near-worship of immonen is out of control - sure, he has his strengths (good mood, good action), but he has a serious problem with faces and facial expressions. the characters look annoyingly similar too much of the time, and the proportions are so consistently bad that it looks like most of them have developed a mild case of down syndrome since bagley left. as far as the art goes, i'm way more impressed by the inks and colors here.

meanwhile, bendis is delivering the story goods, plain and simple. of course we can't judge the arc mid-stream, but things are building nicely and the situation is interesting. peter's newly reestablished relationships with m.j. and aunt may are really satisfying - that said, i hope they both stay out of town and out of the arc after this. it'd be supremely uninteresting to have one of them dangling off of a bridge or whatever at the climax.

i love the dangerous uncertainty of peter's status with SHIELD sans nick fury, and i equally love the possibility suggested above that it's osborn, not SHIELD who has caught him at the end.

i also love that electro seems to have been eating cereal, saltines, and soda - little details like that are worth my 2.99 all by themselves.
