Ultimate Comics Spider-Man (discussion/spoilers)

I'm not sure how I feel about this issue. I didn't like the interaction between spider-man and his amazing friends. Their conversations seem weird. I did like Bobby crushing on the lizard girl.

I also liked the hints to the 616 universe. Ultimate ultimate nullifier and infinity gauntlet spotted at project pegasus. ("Just put it back") Is the Serpent Crown something I should already know about?
I loved them calling out names from 616 heroes when they tried to pick the new guy a superhero name. He settled on calling himself
Nova
.

Also Johnny and Jessica are totally gonna make out next issue! *SQUEEEEEeeee... *cough* Sorry, was that out loud?

I doubt they'll go into it but,

The Serpent Crown is, as its name implies, a crown, which resembles a coiled, seven-headed serpent and is made of an unknown material. The resemblance is a reference to the malevolent seven headed exiled serpent demon/god "Set" to whom the crown holds a mystical link from which it draws its powers.

Those powers confer on the helmet's wearer various abilities. These abilities can include superhuman strength, the power to read and control the minds of others, the power to levitate oneself and other persons or objects, the ability to cast illusions, the power to project destructive bolts of mystical energy and even the mental ability to manipulate matter and energy.

However use of the crown usually leads the wearer to fall under the mental domination of Set, who then has the wearer perform various tasks which would help facilitate its physical return to the Earth

All you really need to know is that the UFF fought the serpent squad or whatever those chicks are at the beginning of Ultimate Power. They were ranting about how the people at Project Pegasus had stolen the serpent crown from them. Then Ultimate Wendell Vaughn came out and told the FF that the serpent crown was classified and no, he couldn't tell them what it was.

I agree, but I loved their final conversation there. "Because with great power comes -" "If you don't know, just don't answer."

I wonder if Bendis will ever actually do an arc with the serpent crown, or if the serpent squad are his new joke villains.

I really like that Spidey has become the spokesperson and unofficial leader of the teenage superheroes in the Ultimate U. It really makes a lot of sense.

I just can't figure out why Bendis writes Ultimate Spidey as such a strong character and then writes 616 Spidey as the immature annoying one in New Avengers. I like that Spidey is neurotic, naive, and feels out of place with the avengers, but he's been a hero longer than anyone else on that team. The other characters have even hinted that they secretly look up to him.

oh well, back on topic.

I don't know what to make of Ultimate Nova

I was personally hoping the character would become a sort of ultra hight tech cosmic Iron Man, but melding Rick Jones with the Frankie Rayes version of Nova is a neat idea, and the character seems to be really close to Richard Rider as he was when he first got his powers.

I hope they do something interesting with the character

I'm pretty sure he'l show up when its least convenient for spidey.

sooooo....Peter Parker gets a haircut. He's not happy
Johnny Storm makes out with Peter's female clone (or at least he claims to) which freaks Peter out. He's really not happy.
Set up in the last few pages for an actual story.

I can't decide if the long hair making Spidey's head look completely round in the mask is clever and funny or completely stupid. It's kind of funny that they fixed both with one fell swoop, but it's ridiculous that they took up half of the comic to do it.

And I feel like the art was worse than usual. Generally I don't hate it (or love it) but this time it really bothered me. I think maybe there were more close-ups of faces than usual and they were all terrible.

Ultimate Spider-Man looks like Charlie Brown wearing a Spider-Man costume.

The art sucks. Bad.

I hope they replace Lafuente soon. I may never forgive Marvel if he has a Bagley run, and they cut Immonen after 20 or so issues.

which Gwen, MJ, and Kitty told Peter. His hair was too long and making his mask round. They even used the Charlie Brown Reference. So they cut his hair.

David Lafuente is the only thing I liked about this comic.

I dropped it because I don't care anymore.

Anyone else thought #9 was great? I don't remember the last time I cared so much about reading the next issue of USM :)
This needs to start coming out twice a month :p
