How would you rate Thor?

But normal people thinking Thor isn't a god isn't anything to do with THE ULTIMATES. It's been around since forever. Even the recent Langridge series had people not sure if he's really Thor for a moment. So no; they're not thinking of THE ULTIMATES and it's not something that came from THE ULTIMATES. If anything, that series took that cliche of people not thinking he's a god to a full and effective conclusion by drawing it out for years.

I'm drawing on my own experiences, and I'm not at all familiar with Thor really outside of the Ultimate version, so forgive me for pigeon-holing there.

I don't see how the approach is "artsy" just because it's ambitious. HULK is no more artsy than SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD.

In terms of chasing the emotional aspect of the story it is, at least for a troglodyte like myself.

That's true, but it was significantly better.

Absolutely, and thats probably because of the freedom Ang Lee was allowed that those other directors probably weren't...well, that and the fact Lee is probably much more talented.

Sorry, by "Asgard invading Earth", I meant that Thor fights Asgardian-themed villains who try to take over Asgard or Earth; Loki, Enchantress, Executioner, and so on. There are obviously exceptions, but he is almost always fighting Norse Gods and part of the appeal of those stories is that Thor fights mythological entities in a modern day setting.

Ultimate Thor isn't so much trying to save the world or Asgard from things like Loki or the Enchantress. Rather, the big problem is that humanity is going to destroy itself and he has to save it. Loki is, at best, helping humanity on that path.

Does that make it clearer?

Thor hitting things with hammers is probably the least interesting part of the character for me. :/

In Ultimates Thor fought: the Hulk, space aliens, then Loki, how does that do anything to "save humanity from itself"? How is fighting Loki and space aliens and occasional his team mates that different All did was make it rain Ethiopia once to encourage croups to grow and then quit when Cap went into Iraq? Besides that, what did Thor non super hero problems did Thor really solve. The problem with "saving humanity from itself" is people are going to have disagreements over what entails. A Libertarian and a socialist will never agree what that should mean. I like the hippie Thor myself, but other people hate him. Marvel will likely want to cast a bigger net then the people who would like the hippie Thor, likely half of America would hate him.

The thing is 616 Thor has gone on for over 50 years, while Ultimate Thor has only appeared occasionally in the last decade. One has a way bigger mythos to draw from then the other. The old one will have had more of a chance to acrew more fans then the new one. There are clearly some hints towards to the Ultimate Thor, what with everyone thinking he is crazy in the movie, but there was no way a direct adaption of Ultimate Thor would have been on the table, there is more to work with in terms of material with 616 Thor.

Plus 616 Thor is a better character. I am prob one of the few here who hates hippie Thor in Ultimates.

You're reacting to a position I don't have. I don't think THOR being 616 is a mistake. I just find it completely uninteresting and I wish it was Ultimate Thor. But I completely understand why, and any criticisms I've been giving are along the lines of; "This is boring and predictable for me". I've been talking about the differences because DiB mentioned how some of Ultimate Thor was oozing into the trailer, and I was explaining how it wasn't. I really wish it was Ultimate Thor, and I think he's the best Thor I've ever read, but I'm aware it isn't that movie. My lack of interest isn't built on the idea that I should be getting Ultimate Thor. I hoped we would, but never really expected it.

Racist.

I got an issue of Gameinformer in the mail today and as you should all know by now there is a game coming out to coincide with the movie. In the preview, this was said by the writer
"In the movie and game universe, Thor and the rest of the Asgardians aren't actual gods, but rather an advanced alien race whose fantastic technology makes them appear godlike."

I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Isn't that the approach taken in Earth X? I prefer that, actually.

Is the game a prequel or something, or just an adaptation of the movie?

Clearly, they've done this to appease the white supremacists who were offended by a black Heimdall.

Don't the white supremacists understand that Heimdall is essentially the doorman? Of course he should be black!

I LOVE Earth X, but I would much rather have them be actual gods. Or at least have it be ambiguous like in Ultimates.

As long as the don't say alien I'm fine. Because that term basically begins up a whole genre of flying saucer that would just seem weird when connected to thor. I like how the teaser states it with the "Your ancestors called it magic..." line. Leave it vague.

at the end of the day, what's the difference between a pantheon of mythical gods and advanced extra-dimensional aliens?

Probably a few chromosomes.

It said it was taking place surrounding the events of the movie and all 9 worlds of Norse mythologhy. So before and during?

Hmmm...

Eh, I don't know. I don't have a problem with the God approach, I guess the mystical alien approach is just slightly more believable to me...I'm not really sure how, though.

I don't really see one being any better or worse than the other in concept, its how its explained and approached in the movie that'll kill it or make it work.
