How would you rate Thor?

The asian guy as Hogun the Grim isn't that strange... He's described as the comics as coming from the east, although he's usually depicted as more Russian than anything else. He's definitely not one of the Aesir, but an adopted son of Asgard.

As for Heimdall, this whole racist outlash is ridiculous, although I do find it funny that he's playing "The White God." Then again, Heimdall of myth has virtually no connection to the Heimdall of the Marvel Cosmos. I'm sure he'll do a great job, and I'm even MORE sure that he'll end up being in the film for about 10 minutes, if even, because his whole point is that he stands alone on Bifrost, the Rainbow Bridge.

In other news: I'm finally reading Walt Simonson's run on Thor from the 80s, and it's freaking great. I finally understand why people actually care about Beta Ray Bill, and I would be TOTALLY down with him showing up in a future Thor movie (hell, his first appearance comes hand-in-hand with a Nick Fury/Thor Team-Up, so it seems practically tailor-made for the Marvel Universe).

One thing you have to understand is that racist groups like this CCC (or KKK), Peckerwoods or the AB, is that they all draw from Norse mythology for their tats, gang signs, etc very much in the same way hispanic gangs use aztec imagery, mythos or mayan calendar. That's why their mad. Marvel is stepping on their toes and they won't stop until first blood is drawn.

Earth X is stupid.

Subsequently, I think coming up with some over-complicated explanation for the pantheon is counter-productive.

The Asgardians are crazy Kirby transdimensional space gods. They were worshiped by humans and are still intrinsically tied to them. That's all we really need to know. Once you start taking away the mystique of the characters, it's no longer mythology.

And I think the same holds true for all of Earth X's back story.

I actually agree with your sentiment, but at the same time, I think EARTH X is fine because it replaces the mystique with insight. The problem with most revelations, as seen in the Ultimate universe, is that they have this wonder and mystique and then go, "He's a space god!" And now all that wonder and mystique is gone replaced with... nothing. He's a space god. But in EARTH X (for the most part) they'd reveal a hidden truth. "They're not just space gods, they're not just shape-shifting aliens - they're the the remnants of the Celestial egg's birth. They're anti-bodies. They're the purpose of humanity."

Which is a very highbrow way of saying, "Get out."

Oh, no. I understood all that. I wouldn't exactly call it insightful or philosophically enlightening, but I understand it.

I just didn't really care for it.

Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is not [going to appear in Thor]

that in and of itself is good news.

Apparently comicbookmovie.com has some serious plot spoilers for the Thor movie. Who knows if they're true, but they're there if you care to go look.

Thor shouldn't look this good.

Marvel seems to have learned a few things from making movies and it doesn't look like they are making steaming turds like Fantastic Four any more.

A few years ago I would have fully expected Thor to be like that. It looks like an actual movie that people took care in making.

On a related note, look at how this thread started off compared to what it's like now.

Marvel didn't make the FF movies though, Fox did and Fox is a pretty bad studio. Fox was the genius studio that decided to make a live action movie based on Dragon Balls and made the terrible Wolverine movie.

Exactly. Since Marvel started making their own movies, they have been a lot better.

"This drink. I like it."

"ANOTHER!"

Also, the taser.

This trailer looks sooooo much better.

Yet.

STILL I FAULT IT. (To see why, go to the end of the trailer and listen.)

*ahem*

Dear Hollywood,

Please, I understand that it did pretty well, but not every action blockbuster trailer needs to have the exact same score as INCEPTION.

Sincerely,
Bass

Another encouraging aspect of the trailer is the question of Thor's godhood (apparently early on in the movie) by the supporting cast. Seems like he's (at least temporarily) put into a loony bin, so at least there's a little bit of the story evoking The Ultimates approach.
