The All About Comics Thread 4: Gemini Loves Crappy Variant Covers

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Mole Is Reading Watchmen?!

Fables - I read the first volume, and I'm aware that the series has a lot of fans here, but I wasn't impressed. Again, great concept, but the whole thing felt sort of average and stale. I didn't dislike it enough that I'll never read another volume of it again, but I'm certainly not rushing to read the rest of the series. And Bill Willingham writes some of the most clunky expository dialog I've seen in a comic book.

Yeah, thats about how I felt on V1 of Fables and didn't get V2 for a few months. Possibly over a year. It gets alot better as it goes on. Pick up 2 and 3. You won't regret it.

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Mole Is Reading Watchmen?!

Willingham's dialogue is charming, and volume 2 of Fables will give you a better idea of what the series is like.

ALSO, I love volume 1. One of my favorites.

For example, does the September Previews catalog, released in mid-August deal with comics released in September or those in October? And if so, does that mean the comics are marked those dates or two month-dates ahead?
The September Previews Catalog comes out at end of August (not actual mid). Because it's the September catalog, it will contain comics shipping in November; the catalogs always show comics coming out in 2 months. The reason for this is to give comic retailers time to put in orders.

The first volume of Fables is quite weak (contrary to what TOG thinks) but it definitely picks up in volume two or three.

As long as you continue reading one day.

Yeah, I'll probably pick it up at some point.

It took me forever to bother to pick up the second volume of Promethea, and it ended up being my favorite comic ever.

I've had teh first half of Promethea forever and a day and haven't gotten around to finishing it.

Infact I should make a list of TPB runs I need to finish...

Promethea
Absolute Sandman
Lucifer
Transmetroploitan

...I'm sure there's more. Maybe DMZ. I really liked the first 15 or so issues.

I don't see what's confusing?

The January catalog contains comics for March.

February catalog - April comics.

March catalog - May comics.

Etc.

Again, the reason for this is to give retailers enough time to put in orders. The reason as to why comic shop gets them the month before is just the same reason as to why someone with a magazine subscription gets it before a store does.

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Mole Is Reading Watchmen?!

I think I burned out on comics lately and my interest is on a wane.

This happens every few years, which is nice because I only spend like ten bucks a week on comics, but it's sad because I love them all.

I fell out due to financials and am pretty glad. I know if I hadn't I'd be buying all the Final Crisis stuff from DC and a whole bunch more. Daredevil, Criminal and some trades are enough for now.

Promethea is great, but I'm not sure if everyone would "connect" with it the way I did. That is to say, on a soul-grabbingly, tear-inducingly, life-changingly powerful level.

Well I loved the **** out of the first two volumes. While I doubt it'll shake my soul (sorta been there with Sandman.) I do expect to love the rest as much if not more.

And now you're a lesbian.

:lol::lol::lol:

That's the funniest thing I've read on here in ages. Congratulations.

Damn you, Katy Perry! I kissed a girl and I did like it!

Well, at least I already have short hair. Does anyone have some Tori Amos albums I could borrow? Or is it Sarah McLachlan that lesbians are supposed to like. This is all so confusing.

Re: The All About Comics Thread 4: Mole Is Reading Watchmen?!

GOOGLE TO THE RESCUE!!

Magazines and most publications display dates that are ahead of the actual date that the issue is released. According to Wikipedia and as many other sources as I could find, this is an old practice done so that publications can still appear to be current some time after they've been released. This is also so that newsstands know how long to keep an issue on the shelf. (Which would be supported by the fact that most LCSs I've been to do tend to keep issues on the shelf for two or three months before taking them down.)

Someone on the wizard universe message boards also claimed that it's because content from various publications is reprinted in something called the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, and that this usually happens exactly two months after the publication is first put out.

Thank you. I would hug you but I'm scared og getting pepper sprayed again.

What is ironic is that is what I thought. BUT I thought that was only one month in advanced like it is here on our comics and magazines because next month when new one is out they replace it sometime and it's normally end of month.

I thought 2 was weird and had to be for another reason. But again thank you.

Magazines are all one month here, too.

I just read vol. 5 of DMZ and thought it was definitely the weakest one so far. It was still enjoyable, but it wasn't anywhere near as entertaining as the first 4 volumes.
