That's just the clock reseting, it flashed random numbers. Remember each digit would have ten number cards in place, whether or not the system actually uses it or not

Not sure if this was posted, but:

People Magazine has a special little pull out section in it this month called a "starter kit" with some background information about the main characters, the crash, the island, the others, the connections, the rivalries, etc.

You can see scans of each page here.

Awesome Ice! Thanks!
I need o get my hands on that poster somehow!

It's funny that, while drunk posting, I mentioned Claire... Because I was going to in this post, anyway.

I watched the episode of season 3 where we learn that Claire is Christian Shepard's daughter and I realized that Claire actually has a lot of potential. In the beginning I didn't think that she was all that interesting... How could I be concerned about a pregnant woman when there were polar bears and smoke monsters? Right? I realized, though, she has probably had the most traumatic experience on the island of any of the castaways -- the abduction, memory whipe, Rousseau's theft of Aaron, tormoil with Charlie, losing Charlie, and eventually getting the stones to essentially abandon Aaron. Christian must have been pretty insightful because what I would imagine happened to her is that her relationship with the island needed to take shape in order for whatever moves are being made by lets say Jacob or MiB to be successful. In addition to that, I hope that by having Jack and Claire interact as siblings who would like to take on the mystery of their now walking father it will make the show (and her character) all the more interesting.

so just watching some LOST season five in preparation for Tuesday (YAY!!)

I noticed some things in the episode "the variable"
Faraday is talking about how humans can change the past b/c they are the variables in the equation, that's why they try to prevent the incident by detonating the H-Bomb at the end of the season.
That is coupled with Faraday's flashbacks of Eloise Hawking pushing him toward his destiny, which we eventually find out is him being shot by her in the past.
Then Eloise shows up at the hospital and talks to Penny about Desmond being shot. She says it's her son's (Faraday's) fault that Desmond got shot. Penny asks Eloise if Desmond is going to be okay. She says, "I don't know. For the first time in a long time, I don't know what's going to happen next."
Desmond got shot by Ben b/c Faraday talked to him while he was still living in the hatch and gave him memories he didn't have before and sent him to find Eloise at Oxford. Because the "rules don't apply to him."

I don't know what all that means, but i'm sure it will come together at some point for something mind-blowing. The only thing I'm fairly confident of is that because Faraday talked to Desmond it changed the timestream, that's why he suddenly remembered it three years after he had been off the island. That's why Eloise doesn't know what's going to happen next.

So here are the unanswered questions I have:
Why does Eloise Hawking always know exactly what's going to happen next?
Why did she have to sacrifice Daniel and send him back to the island to be killed by her pastself?
Why is Desmond special? Why don't the rules apply to him? (I assume it has something to do with turning the fail safe key)
And most importantly...If Eloise Hawking is Daniel's mom, and Charles Widmore is his dad, why is his last name Faraday?

And also I wonder if there is some sort of parallel between Christian Shepherd and Charles Widmore. They both have a son and then a daughter by another woman. Both those daughters have sons.

Okay, i'm done.

My theory is she has the same flashes that Desmond got during season three. She sees chances where destiny may be changed and the island charges her to maintain certain paths of destiny
Why did she have to sacrifice Daniel and send him back to the island to be killed by her pastself?
As I said before, they island has a plan/destiny that she must ensure. So she had to make sure he goes to the island and plays his part. It's inevitable and needs to happen
Why is Desmond special? Why don't the rules apply to him? (I assume it has something to do with turning the fail safe key)
I assume the key as well since that's the start of his more sci fi adventures
And most importantly...If Eloise Hawking is Daniel's mom, and Charles Widmore is his dad, why is his last name Faraday?
Tough, they did point this out in te Mysteries of the Universe, I assume to either keep Widmore out of his life. So he won't feel the need to find him or because she knows his name in the future is Faraday.

I like watching Fake Locke now I know he is fake Locke. It is so obvious.

The whole show is like this. When you rewatch episodes you think "how could I not see this coming, it makes perfect sense"
