Hollywood Stock Exchange

Well. People read my post but didn't respond. Instead they ran off to panic sell. I can tell cause I was watching the stocks.

Anyway, I went down by 67k. That ****ing sucked. I was absolutely convinced Meet the Robinsons would answer an all ages family friendly movie need that wasn't being attended to in previous opening weekends, but instead it went down by 16 points. Still, it's been relatively stable since then, while Blades of Glory continues to drop like crazy.

In the meantime, The Happening is like totally happening. I've scored a good chunk of profit off of it.

That people trading stocks affects stocks
Oh well yeah, it's common knowledge in the REAL stock market.

But that was an element that didn't seem to cross people's minds in the thread here and when I brought it up, it seemed like a surprise. Games are abstractions after all, and there was no guarantee that the developers of the HSX attempted to include ALL elements of the stock exchange... they might have glossed over it in the same way that games like Civilization gloss over certain cultural phenomenological aspects.

I think what really amused me though about the earlier weeks of playing was how many people bought into big stocks with the assumption that big names and big films equals big rewards, instead of paying attention to fundamental fact that profiting from stock exchanges are about tracking value changes not ACTUAL value.

To this point the only two "big" movies I've bought have been 300 and Grindhouse. 300 obviously paid off and Grindhouse is finally even again. But yeah, otherwise I'm doing pretty well with my small picks.

For the most part, I only buy moviestocks to 'daytrade' them. I pick them up in mass quantities in anticipation of a price spike, then sell them off because there's been a track record of 'corrective' decreases and 'value-dumping' after every price spike.

In any case, there isn't a real problem with buying the big movies and big stars. It's just that sometimes, there's not enough of an incentive to promote holding onto them. I remember somebody said they bought Jackie Chan, but the fact that he was a non-presence in movie news for weeks meant that there wasn't a real justification for holding onto his starbond.

Sure, there's a long-term investment aspect to that, but money spent on immobile stocks is money better spent on stocks that fluctuate (for good or bad).

Whoo! My 23 cent stock went up a 13 cents :D

And Bruce Willis was finally up so his *** god sold off.
Oooh!

A similar thing happened, but only better. I spent on Paul Verhoeven's Black Book. It went up by 65 cents I think earlier this week and I bought 50,000 shares of it to boot. That was a 144% return on investment.

I just crossed the 4 million dollar line. Whoo!

Both my moviestocks and starbonds have been fluctuating in value wildly, but I've been trading back and forth and back and forth hard enough to keep things in the black.

The Happening is really Happening. Justin Timberlake isn't doing too bad either.

I've not looked at mine for ages but then I looked on it today

Woohoo they are finally going up

Everything I have tanked since I was last on. Even my 23 cent stock went down to a time.

Good thing I bought very small portions of Grindhouse. Too bad it still ****ed the holy hell out of me.

I think a case like 300 is actually rarer than we think. In fact, I'm beginning to suspect that VERY VERY VERY few movies adjust positively after opening weekend EVEN if they open successfully. If I remember correctly, TMNT opened top at the box office. So in a real world sense it was actually very successful at that time.

However, it was still overvalued at the HSX world because everyone buying shares of it bumped its value up way past any realistic possibility of correcting positively. Remember that the current share value is BOTH a measure of expected gross AND the intensity at which it is being traded and bought. Therefore, Grindhouse did not bomb. Its just that traders created a false box office expectation. Ditto for TMNT. Or Meet the Robinsons. Remember that to some extent, 300 was an under the radar success.

True, the frenzy of hype that preceded its release was intense enough to bring it out of that 'under the radar' state... but it was a film with practically no buzz during production. It was a movie based on a lesser known Frank Miller work with an almost no-name director and a cast of minimal stars. This is a situation completely unlike say Iron Man which has its own buzz the moment it went into concept phase.

Therefore I think we're going to have to start looking to profit at the non-obvious places. Hype is not necessarily a bad measure by any means, but remember that it is the most VISIBLE one, and it can be used by traders at the expense of others.

At this point my 23 cent stock is just screwing with me. Its at 23 cents again. Just sitting there.

Argh.

Ok, that was weird

I was logged in on Saturday and it refused to let me trade Grindhouse. I tried several times during the day, and it wouldn't let me.

I ****ing hate this game

Moviestocks get halted during opening weekend. Meaning you're not allowed to trade them, whether buying or selling, during that weekend.

I'm back in the four million dollar lane! Whoo! Made a hell of a lot of money from Black Book, Savages and Hulk 2.

Okay, it looks like I need to start selling things sooner. I wait too long and I keep going back into the hole.

Damn the hole. Its worse than The Box.

i havn't been on any of these sites in a while, and just checked it today............ damn i'm down quite a bit.....
