Re: Heroes *Spoilers*
I just saw "Homecoming" the ninth episode, which is a 'pay off' episode of sorts (in that the cheerleader prophecy is pretty much resolved), and I have to say, I thought it was pretty damn good.
Unlike a lot of shows which tell bad stories well, I think Heroes is telling a good story... not too well. Too slow, characters are too uninteresting, but, Homecoming proves that they do know how to effectively set up and pay off moments with clockwork like efficiency.
A couple of case in points - the fact that Sylar and Peter both assumed that Jackie was the 'special', and not Claire because of her claim that she saved someone from a trainwreck was ****ing spectacular. That is a superb pay off that was extremely well done. They even mention the trainwreck in the same episode, and at no point did I see it coming. When the scene where Peter asks Claire where Jackie is, I, like Columbo before me, slapped my forehead as I marvelled as the jigsaw peice fell together.
Another moment, though more obvious to me but still extremely well done, was Peter surviving because he copied Claire's powers.
That, and Sylar was really quite scary. And Jackie's last word was brilliant and revealing. And Claire's dad is good.
All in all, "Homecoming" was what I had hoped for. A good, effective pay off to the story so far.
However, it's not perfect. First of all, the actual ending of the story was not satisfying. Having Mr Bennet's associates suddenly stop Sylar is, to me, not very good. I'd've preferred it if Peter had really given Sylar a bit more of a beating, as if, Sylar escapes, but only just, and falls unconscious somewhere in the woods due to said beating, and then Mr Bennet's associates showed up. I feel that the only reason Sylar should've been abducted was due to Peter and/or Hiro's intervention(s) and not the intervention of anyone else (speaking of which, I kept expecting Hiro to suddenly tele-port in and cut Sylar's scalp off with his sword... I thought of this because if Hiro is six months in the past, then the future-sword Hiro might not be from the 'future', he would just be from the present, now, because he went back in time months ago... but that doesn't link up with the 'scar' comment).
Other plot lines, sadly, stumble along. Dr Suresh's plot is too long, arduous, and boring to make a point that really, was made in the first episode. It's like it's taken him 9 episodes to get where the audience is. I'm convinced he's dumb. The password on the computer - my first guess was his dead sister's name. Took him three goes. The Jessica/Niki plot is... annoying. I love the three characters, Niki/Jessica, DL, and Mika, BUT the story... it's too laboured. It should've resolved by now. It, I think, would've been more exhilerating had they finished it a lot quicker, instead of spreading it out as they have.
Nathan seems to becoming more interesting. I loved how, when he discovered he was being blackmailed, he asked to be paid more. I've never seen that before, and was a superb thing for him to do. I thought he took a big step back when he ruined the painting, but when it was revealed that Peter was meant to die, Nathan covering it up made sense. The cop's storyline is really let down by the FBI agent who is tragically one-dimensional. "Angry *****" isn't a good character, and I'm convinced the actress could do better if given more. The cop himself, and the radiation guy, a both pretty good. The cop is very likeable, but the marriage/affair sub-plot is kind of extraneous. It's, again, to slowly paced. Isaac I like quite a bit, and think he's an underused resource in the show. Simone I can't stand. She doesn't do anything.
Hiro and Ando, however, I am convinced, these two are stars of the show. They're brilliant. Part of me wishes the show was told solely from their point of view. Like C-3PO and R2-D2 (in fact, in the diner when they part ways, just before Hiro sees Nathan fly, the dialogue of their departure is, no question, completely taken from Star Wars, when C-3PO and R2-D2 part ways on Tatooine at the beginning of the film).
Anyhow, the show, I think, has gotten better with each episode and "Homecoming" was a very nice pay off. I do resent the slow pacing of the show - I have skipped scenes and have yet to go "I've missed something", there are too many scenes in which absolutely nothing occurs - and a plethora of unintriguing characters. But it does have a clockwork conspiracy that is engaging, and it seems, the guys in charge have the ability to pull it off for the most part, which is good.
So, I'm kinda enjoying it at the moment. It's pretty cool.
