Heroes seasons 1 & 2 series discussion [spoilers]

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

That was easily one of the best episodes.

That last scene with Peter and Isaac was awesome. It gave me goose bumps when Peter used his voice like Sylar did.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Simone's dead...saw that coming. Liked how it was pulled off though. Should create some interesting and dramatic tension between Peter and Isaac...well, more of it anyway (quite a bit already with the whole competing over Simone thing).

According to the producers another major character will die in the March 5 episode "Like Any Parasite". My money's on Nikki/Jessica.

Looking forward to next week's episode and finding out more about HRG/Bennet.

You know, I started thinking about the Peter vs. Issac issue after Simone had her ticket punched. Remember several episodes back where Hiro warped into Issac's flat and found him dead? Well, we may have a new suspect. I figure, Peter can siphon anyone's powers involuntarily. I'm sure he got a lot more from Sylar than his telekinesis, which would also explain why he was feeling so sick after saving Claire (remember, Bennet commented to Sylar that so many changes in his DNA would have a negative effect on him.)

That's all speculation, and I doubt the producers would want to turn Peter into the main baddie of the series (although, that would make one hell of a plot twist). I'm just sayin' is all...

As far as "Like any other parasite", I wouldn't doubt Niki OR Jessica dies, but I don't think it will be both. I started thinking about the finale of Fight Club (the film, anyway... the book is slightly different) and how Tyler Durden killed his alter ego by shooting himself in the head. It's far fetched for a show that seems to try and keep a realistic approach, but then again, we're still talking about meta-humans.

I'm looking forward to the next episode and some exposure on Bennet's past. I've been hearing Eric Roberts is going to be showing up, possibly as Linderman, and I can accept that... thought I was still holding out for James Gandolfini to fill that role. Oh well.

BTW, does anyone have a link to the preview for next Monday's episode? The DVR cut off before I had a chance to see it, and the official NBC site doesn't have it up at the moment. Please advise.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Well, I have just finished the first episode (I'm downloading the series), and I have to say - I thought it was boring. Boring, boring, boring. Not bad, but not good. The first scene that introduces the cheerleader is good. All of Hiro's scenes are good. That was it. The rest was just... dull. Nothing meaningful happened for an hour. But... it is the first episode. I'll continue to give it a shot, but it's quite remarkable how television writing has changed. Usually an episode is meant to have a story in it, today, an episode can just be a series of scenes where people talk to each incessantly about the same things, without any progression, save for the smallest of sub-plots, of which there is no guarantee of a resolution.

So, right now, I think the show is dull. But everyone else seems to like it. So like Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Battlestar Galactica, I'll continue to give it a shot. ^___^

That's how I feel about every episode.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

There's this old show called Joan of Arcadia about this girl who talks to God. God appears to her in the forms of random people. They interact with the environment and talk to other people and though it's confirmed that they're not hallucinations and are actually God, it's unclear whether God creates them for the purpose of talking to Joan or possesses preexisting people.

Anyway, there are a few recurring Gods (Goth God, Chess God) but one of the one-shot Gods who only appeared in one episode was...

Sylar God. The actor who plays Sylar played God.

I just thought that was funny.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Just saw the next three episodes (waiting for #5 "Hiros" to download), and I have to say, I'm starting to really enjoy it. Hiro and Ando, for me, are the highlights of the show. Claire is okay. The rest of the show borders on crap.

At the moment they are setting up a kind of... clockwork conspiracy that is very intriguing. However, setting up the pieces of a puzzle is not an excuse for having a slow, plodding pace, which I think the show has. While some would say you need the slow episodes to 'build character', I vehemently disagree. Babylon 5 slowly built up a story over three seasons, and did so with wonderful pace and exciting stand alone episodes, that built up characters. I would say the best TV characters were not created in soap operas but rather, in the traditional episodic format.

What I'm trying to say is this - modern shows have a underlying arc structure which they far too slowly reveal whilst, instead, giving us bland soap operas. Essentially, the soap opera is based on the promise of a satisfying resolution.

Now, at the moment, my criticism of Heroes is that it is, too often, slow and boring. However, they have yet to give a 'pay-off' to anything, and at the moment, the show seems to be getting more interesting with each episode. I'm operating under the assumption that they stupidly delayed the start of the show until the Nteenth episode to 'set up the characters', and once they're ready to go, it'll pick up. Part of me is terrified that there will either be no pay off, or the pay off won't do much. I'll wait till some kind of pay off, and if it's good, I'll stay with it. If the pay off is crap and it looks like the show is going nowhere, I'm going to drop it.

I hope it's good because a lot of my friends enjoy it, and it's more fun when you're all enjoying something than when your friends start talking about a show that pisses you off. :(

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Something that does piss me off - the Japanese duo speak in Japanese. Why, when Suresh is in India talking to Indians, why is he speaking English and not Indian?

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

I just saw "Homecoming" the ninth episode, which is a 'pay off' episode of sorts (in that the cheerleader prophecy is pretty much resolved), and I have to say, I thought it was pretty damn good.

Unlike a lot of shows which tell bad stories well, I think Heroes is telling a good story... not too well. Too slow, characters are too uninteresting, but, Homecoming proves that they do know how to effectively set up and pay off moments with clockwork like efficiency.

A couple of case in points - the fact that Sylar and Peter both assumed that Jackie was the 'special', and not Claire because of her claim that she saved someone from a trainwreck was ****ing spectacular. That is a superb pay off that was extremely well done. They even mention the trainwreck in the same episode, and at no point did I see it coming. When the scene where Peter asks Claire where Jackie is, I, like Columbo before me, slapped my forehead as I marvelled as the jigsaw peice fell together.

Another moment, though more obvious to me but still extremely well done, was Peter surviving because he copied Claire's powers.

That, and Sylar was really quite scary. And Jackie's last word was brilliant and revealing. And Claire's dad is good.

All in all, "Homecoming" was what I had hoped for. A good, effective pay off to the story so far.

However, it's not perfect. First of all, the actual ending of the story was not satisfying. Having Mr Bennet's associates suddenly stop Sylar is, to me, not very good. I'd've preferred it if Peter had really given Sylar a bit more of a beating, as if, Sylar escapes, but only just, and falls unconscious somewhere in the woods due to said beating, and then Mr Bennet's associates showed up. I feel that the only reason Sylar should've been abducted was due to Peter and/or Hiro's intervention(s) and not the intervention of anyone else (speaking of which, I kept expecting Hiro to suddenly tele-port in and cut Sylar's scalp off with his sword... I thought of this because if Hiro is six months in the past, then the future-sword Hiro might not be from the 'future', he would just be from the present, now, because he went back in time months ago... but that doesn't link up with the 'scar' comment).

Other plot lines, sadly, stumble along. Dr Suresh's plot is too long, arduous, and boring to make a point that really, was made in the first episode. It's like it's taken him 9 episodes to get where the audience is. I'm convinced he's dumb. The password on the computer - my first guess was his dead sister's name. Took him three goes. The Jessica/Niki plot is... annoying. I love the three characters, Niki/Jessica, DL, and Mika, BUT the story... it's too laboured. It should've resolved by now. It, I think, would've been more exhilerating had they finished it a lot quicker, instead of spreading it out as they have.

Nathan seems to becoming more interesting. I loved how, when he discovered he was being blackmailed, he asked to be paid more. I've never seen that before, and was a superb thing for him to do. I thought he took a big step back when he ruined the painting, but when it was revealed that Peter was meant to die, Nathan covering it up made sense. The cop's storyline is really let down by the FBI agent who is tragically one-dimensional. "Angry *****" isn't a good character, and I'm convinced the actress could do better if given more. The cop himself, and the radiation guy, a both pretty good. The cop is very likeable, but the marriage/affair sub-plot is kind of extraneous. It's, again, to slowly paced. Isaac I like quite a bit, and think he's an underused resource in the show. Simone I can't stand. She doesn't do anything.

Hiro and Ando, however, I am convinced, these two are stars of the show. They're brilliant. Part of me wishes the show was told solely from their point of view. Like C-3PO and R2-D2 (in fact, in the diner when they part ways, just before Hiro sees Nathan fly, the dialogue of their departure is, no question, completely taken from Star Wars, when C-3PO and R2-D2 part ways on Tatooine at the beginning of the film).

Anyhow, the show, I think, has gotten better with each episode and "Homecoming" was a very nice pay off. I do resent the slow pacing of the show - I have skipped scenes and have yet to go "I've missed something", there are too many scenes in which absolutely nothing occurs - and a plethora of unintriguing characters. But it does have a clockwork conspiracy that is engaging, and it seems, the guys in charge have the ability to pull it off for the most part, which is good.

So, I'm kinda enjoying it at the moment. It's pretty cool.

the little narratives that suresh does are ****ing boring. im all about the hiro & ando plot. more kimiko please

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Not only are Suresh's voice-overs boring, but they're also didactic nonsense. "Evolution... is whatever I need it to be this week..." Ugh.

It's almost as bad as the voice-overs for Desperate Housewives.

I have no idea why you keep referencing Desperate Housewives, and I don't think I want to know why either.

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

Because it's a show I quite liked and then got enraged by. And it's successful and there are parellels.

An amusing thing I just noticed - in #14 "Distractions", Hiro's father, played by George Takei, has a car with the license plate NCC-1701.

George Takei played Sulu on Star Trek (which is odd considering how many times Hiro has referenced Star Trek), and the Enterprise's registration number is NCC-1701.

I noticed it first time I saw it. :D

I may be a nerd, but I'm proud of my Poirot-like observational skills. :D

There is a very tiny Marvel universe reference in episode 16 as well, keep an eye out for that..lol

I can't get enough of this show though, in my eyes it's the best thing on TV since Buffy and Angel. Which is VERY high praise for me, praise be to The Whedon.

Nikki is the only character with powers that kind of annoys me. Its like she has so much potential, but is so cut off from the rest of the heroes in the show, whereas the rest connect and fit together, she just flaps around in her own little world.
I was glad to see
Simone dead, she
was dull and pointless! (Spoilers there for Bass and others who may be just kicking off watching...lol)

Re: Heroes *Spoilers*

ye sure cos everyone in india sounds like that when they speak english

Well he talked with people with a good wealth (except the little powered kid), everyone should be able to talk relative good english.
Edit: and I'm sure they can speak better english, but it wouldn't give the "feel" of another country.
