Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I was actually a little dissapointed in it, but for a reason.

When the Order is fighting the Death Eaters, they're turning into wisps of smoke and blasting each other. Yet, Dumbledore and Voldemort don't really do this. Yet, in the book, it made it very clear that they constantly Apparated while the Order and Death Eaters didn't.

I thought it worked, but you are a book purist.

Yes, and I admit it taints my view of the movies.

Just today, in fact, I got in an argument with my brother's girlfriend about how I wasn't a fan of the movies. She went on and on about how I was wrong, and I said "I'm sorry, but the books are just far better". She then proceeds to tell me that she never read the books so she has no idea what she'd be missing.

Looking back, it's really just a nitpick. I try to be objective about them, but I can't. They aren't terrible, mind you, they just don't live up to my rather lofty expectations.

This was far and away the best of the films so far.

This was as good as the other four put together.

I was so impressed at how much of the plot they actually got in there. From things like Mrs. Figg and Kreacher to small details like the Troll's leg umbrella stand at Grimmauld Place.

What really blew me away, though, was Fred and George apparating. When I read the book, I pictured it like the old, stop-cam teleportation effects they'd use on Bewitched and Monty Python, where the character instantly pops into place, no fancy flashes or smoke, and accompanied by a zany little sound effect.

*BOINK*

When they used that in the movie, right down to the noise, despite having everybody else apparate differently, I was absolutely giddy. The good mood lasted for the rest of the movie, too.

Even Ralph Fiennes was ten times better in this one than in the last one. He really felt like Voldemort here.

Also, I think Sirius' death was a lot better in the movie than in the book. This was much more impactual and definitive.

Good show all around. 9.5 out of 10 from me.

EDIT: I think this is also the first Potter film to enter the IMDb Top-250(it's currently at #249). I vote to keep it on the list. It'll certainly be in my Top 100 when I make the list.

So. . .did he get hit by Beatrix's spell or did it miss and he fell through the archway? I'm a little fuzzy on that. . .

Harry Potter made $77 million this weekend in the United States, bringing its domestic total to $140 million. The budget for this one was $150 million, so I can imagine the people at Warner Bros. are very happy right now.

I hope to see it at least one more time; maybe take my little brother to it.

Couple of stray thoughts...

(1) A good example - as if we needed any! - of why reading a book, and seeing a movie based upon that book, are two very different experiences, ESPECIALLY if the book in question is lengthy and "detailed". Inevitably, SOME backstory, some fleshing out of characters, etc, has to be sacrificed in trying to make a movie of manageable length. This is NOT a criticism of the movie, by any means. And not a novel observation, certainly. Just noting that the movie does a good job of moving the "movie storyline" ahead, and of summarizing a very detailed book into a "bite sized" format.

(2) Enjoyed the movie, quite a bit. Of the books, this was, for me, the least... er... I don't know... upbeat? Whimsical? By design, granted, as Harry is feeling dissatisfied, isolated, somewhat "left out", angry, frustrated, and so forth (while the HALF BLOOD PRINCE is hardly light fare, I don't think it has nearly that air of stifling frustration), and I think the movie reflected that.

(3) I do wish they had mentioned that Trelawney (SP?) was the source of the prophecy in question, and had perhaps given a bit more weight to its significance (to Voldemort, at any rate!). She is, granted, not a really central character, per se, but her role re the prophecy casts her in a very different light (in the movies she tends to come off as almost wholly incompetent, IMHO)...

And... treading carefully here... I am not one of those who feels one must "choose sides" when it comes to movies/characters. As a fan of comic books, science fiction, fantasy in general, I was looking forward to all the summer genre releases, and hoped all would be entertaining (and for the most part, I have been satisfied!). I was looking forward to Spiderman 3, Fantastic Four, Transformers, AND Harry Potter. So, PURELY IN THAT CONTEXT... I think I had a better time at TRANSFORMERS than at Potter, and maybe than at Spiderman. Not saying TRANSFORMERS is a better movie, because Potter (see above) was a segment in an ongoing story, and it was a darker, more downbeat segment of that story... and Spidey 3 was somewhat similar. Maybe I just liked the more upbeat nature of TRANSFORMERS, and the novelty. I definitely think TRANSFORMERS was the most fun of the big genre releases this summer (again...not getting into the whole "who is BETTER" thing! ... just based on "fun" quotient!)...

Having not read any of the books, I have to say that I enjoyed this film a little more than the others.

If for no other reason that it made me want to actually read the 6th book so I can find out what happens. Will I read the book? Not when I have the magic of Wikipedia at my fingertips. So I did wiki the 6th book and I'm now looking forward to the film in November 2008.

But onto this film....

I liked it.

I really wish I could get into the film enough to talk about upcoming plots, and character turns, and whatnot.....but I can't. The only 2 plot points I actually care about is how it ends with Harry and Voldermort.....and to see how Ginny and Harry's relationship plays out.

So yeah....I liked it. I'll get it on DVD and watch it randomly.

And Luna Lovegood was awesome.

And there needed to be more Tonks. She was hot.

This movie spawned my obsession for Emma Watson.
