Captain America Vol. 5 by Ed Brubaker discussion (SPOILERS!)

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

And the method of his death is interesting, seeing as how in 1602 he survived a point-blank bullet to the head. As I remember, Marvel went to great lengths to make it understand that 1602 happens in regular 616 continuity
I'd imagine that guns from 1602 would be significantly weaker than a sniper rifle and a S.H.I.E.L.D. issued handgun today

He wasn't shot in the year 1602, he was shot in the future and sent back in time. So if anything the guns were better/stronger than those today.

sorry i didn't read 1602, a little before my comic reading time, and it never ocurred to me that i doubt there would be guns back in 1602

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

i was reading through the article and it said that millar refused to write cap dead. but bru denied it. I kinda believe that maybe millar decided against killing off cap.

I thought he wasn't shot with a bullet - he was just shot back into the time stream. That's the impression I got.

I agree with TGO. This is either going to make Captain America even better than it already was, or it's going to make it one of the worst books Marvel are publishing. I hope it's the former, because if it's the latter, I'm going to be very disappointed.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

This would have been a whole lot more meaningful if it had happened in Civil War #7, seeing has how basically nothing happened in that issue, especially in comparison to this issue. It also would have made Civil War much better than it was.

Heard. It would've made the Civil War series the "life altering" experience that it was hyped to be. This Captain America issue would've been just as good had it been simply the view points of different players with Civil War just revealing the general situation.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

To be fair, if Captain America is indeed dead (even for a little while), it does deserve to happen in his own comic and not anywhere else. How would you like to be a hermit somewhere who's been getting a subscription to Captain America, and only Captain America, for 30 years and been enjoying every issue when all of a sudden volume 5 issue 25 comes out and he's already dead, killed off in some book you never even heard of?

I'm saying it should have happened in both.

"I remember the equipment. I was strapped down.

Before they turned it on, they shot me. In the head, not the chest. It felt like a hammer.

I remember that."

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

I've always said that the day Bucky, Jason Todd, or Uncle Ben comes back, the apocalypse is nigh. Within one year, we got not just one, but TWO of these back. Bucky and Jason Todd, the two people that have been said will never ever ever EVER return despite the revolving door of comics, have returned. Please, Marvel, don't bring Uncle Ben back as some crazy cyborg commie, too.

oh well, uncle ben is pretty much back too :)
among all these characters, the actual captain america is killed
the apocalypse is on!

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

Reading that Millar said that he didn't want to do it in Civil War because he's doesn't like to do big deaths like people wanted, I agree with him for the most part. Sometimes it's not really needed. I say this is one of those cases.

Brubaker on Cap

NRAMA: Finally – one last item – second to last panel. Showing Cap's open eye under the sheet. Was that your instruction or did Steve Epting pick that up on his own? That really drove home the point…

EB: Here's my script for the last half of the final page of the issue, so you can see for yourself. I think that answers the question, doesn't it?

3—And in a room in the ER, Steve Rogers lies on a gurney, one arm hanging down, his Captain America glove visible on its hand. A white sheet has been pulled up to cover him, and blood soaks through the sheet from his belly and chest. We just see part of his face, where the sheet didn't totally cover him up, and we see one eye, empty of life.

VOICE-OVER BOX (words like the last two panels): "…what did I do?"

4—Closer on the lifeless hand dangling down toward the tile floor, almost like it's reaching for something it will never grasp. This panel fades to black at the bottom of the page, where the title and credits go.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

I swear this is the dumbest idea ever. I really see no reason to kill captain america. I hate that they're only doing it for shock value and monies and eventually he'll be back and it'll be so meaningless.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

It's funny how no matter what, people always take the cliche argument, "It's only for the money." just because they don't like it.

well, then what is it for? To give the character meaning? To show that times are changing and that he's no longer needed even though every hero ever recognized him and wanted to be him on some level? I don't believe a thing jq says why they killed him. If anything, it was for shock value and to raise comic sales to lure in more readers via plugs from msn, yahoo and cnn etc. he even says he wants peoples' money so thye have to read the next issue to see who the next cap will be.

EDIT some hours later: Ok i went to two comic shops on my lunch and called two others and none of them have this issue. it is totally sold out and there are no more to be distributed from warehouses. Completely sold out. hopefully they make a 2nd printing but im going on ebay to find the first printing.

Re: Captain America series discussion (SPOILERS!)

At DC and Marvel, everything is for money; but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Honestly, is there a law that states, "Anything done for profit is EVIL and BAD and CRAP and serves NO other purpose?" Sure, a majority of events done in the past were absolute bull crap- but that doesn't mean they all will be, and that we need to immediately whine about anything new.

As long as Brubaker's plans didn't get messed up (which he claims they didn't,) I'm a-okay with this story and will continue to read it.

Pick up Superman #75 while you're at it.

In other words, don't overpay. Because when he comes back and this is all a distant memory, the issue certainly won't be worth what you will have paid for it.

It's not worth $3.99 to begin with.
