Buffy Season 8 Comic series

so, at what point did Whedon decide to make Buffy gay? I read somewhere that she's hooking up with some Japanese slayer.

The Newsarama folks seem to be missing the point. They were arguing back and forth about whether or not it's in character for Buffy to have a lesbian fling. Now they're arguing about whether or not women feel the need to experiment. And what they aren't talking about is WHY Buffy had a lesbian fling.

Two words: Publicity Stunt

Two more words: ****ty Writing

My regard for Whedon has been dropping like a stone for some time now. Runaways went from one of my favorite books before he took over to me completely forgetting that it was still being printed when the last issue came out. And this series has been lackluster. This development certainly doesn't help.

My biggest problem with Whedon making Buffy gay. His past handling of lesbian characters. Tara was repeatedly mindraped by Willow who adjusted her memories and the like, then Kennedy was crazystalkerdyke. I have to admit, from what I've seen of the Japanese Slayer, she's very sweet, and surprisingly well written.

But the idea of making Buffy gay makes my skin crawl for some reason, it's almost like BKV's writing of Nico in Runaways.

I thought it was just me. Glad to see it isn't. Hell, on the show she was practically homophobic.
 
The reason some people get mad at JW is that they get into his characters at a certain point and then, when he refuses to leave those characters trapped in amber forever, they act like they have been betrayed. Well, they're his characters, not yours, and to insist that Buffy and pals never experiment, evolve, make mistakes etc is selfish and betrays a complete lack of an understanding of the basics of writing.

Oh, and Buffy in bed with another chick was hot. :twisted:

It was a cheap gimmick to get people talking about the comic. I didn't dislike it because this wasn't the Buffy I know. I disliked it because it was dumb.

We've seen the 'Buffy uses someone that cares about her to feel better about herself' storyline before. They did a whole season with it. Switching the gender of the infatuated sucker doesn't change the storyline. It just gets people saying "Hey did you hear that Buffy slept with a woman in that Season 8 comic?" That is a gimmick. And not a particularly good one.

I wish I could agree with this, but it's more of Mr Whedon's complete and utter inability to write healthy interpersonal relationships. Examples; Emma Frost in Astonishing is borderline obsessive (with her "predator's heart" *gag*), Willow (from Xander to Tara to Kennedy, the witch is about as balanced as Wanda), even Buffy's line of lovers (and her emotional blackmailing of said lovers). The only healthy relationship he's done so far is Kitty/Piotr in Astonishing. That's not good writing, it's more fanservice than anything else.

Which really upsets me more than anything is the appalling lack of healthy GLBT couples in comics/television/film.

My problem with it is that, while Whedon has said that they aren't turning Buffy gay (Which would be RETARDED after her relationships with Angel, Riley and Spike), but that she's an "open person" and therefore experiments. Whedon takes the idea that it's not the sex of the person that matters, but that it's the person you fall in love with.

Ok, seriously, what the ****.

I'm a fairly open guy. But, to be rather frank, I'm not going to ever fall in love, or even experiment, with a guy. And I know a couple of gay people, male and female, that simply aren't going to ever fall in love with someone of the opposite sex. It's hardwired into you. Yes, there are people who experiment. I was fine when Willow came out of the closet (Despite how much I liked Oz). And I like Satsu and wanted to see how her relationship developed with Buffy since I was confident it could never come to be. But, this is just stupid. As several of you have said, it's bad writing.

As for it being Whedon's characters. . .no, they're not. Yes, he created and writes them, but they also belong to his audience. I'm open to most things creators do with their characters, but when it comes to something that is clearly a gimmick, like McCheese said, it's just plain bad writing and there is no excuse for that, regardless of who's characters they are.

I'm going to continue reading because, overall, I've liked Season 8, but I really hope Whedon doesn't resort to anything else like this for the remainder of the series..

Healthy interpersonal relationships make for poor stories. Buffy fans have been upset since season 2 that she and Angel are not together. You know what Buffy would be with B&A together? Bones.

GLBT and curious people are just like everyone else. They are crazy and unpredictable. It is never any writers responsibility to portray any group in a positive or representative manner. JW is in the storytelling business, not the representation business. If every race, religion, sexuality etc is always shown based on what somebody thinks is positive and enriching the results will be both unrealistic and boring. Buffy has and will continue to feature events that are shocking and designed to get people talking. If there is one thing I can say for sure about those who constantly criticize TV shows and comics for going for shock value it is that they will never be successful writers.

I do not know how JW plans to plat this event out. If he just drops it it will seem like a gimmick, if it becomes a part of Buffy's makeup it will add depth to a complex and provocative character. JW isn't perfect but he isn't "stupid".

We keep calling it bad writing, when it was one of the better written issues to come out of the series. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of this arc.

That said, Lesbian Sex Buffy = a big roll of the eyes. But if they HAD to do it (which they didn't), this is how i'd want it handled.

Well, the issue itself was fine. But, the actual gimmick wasn't. Perhaps "bad writing decision" is more appropriate?
