Battlestar Galactica (re-imagined)

New episode tonight at 10pm.

I'm tired as hell from work (tax deadline and end of season in Florida means busy times at the shipping store), so I'll be staying home tonight and watching it as it airs. Hope its on par with the quality of the season premiere from last week.

Poor Cally.

I was hoping she might not die but this is Battlestar Galactica, and if there's a situation where one of the options is a main character getting killed, that's the one they're gonna go for.

I like how she was suicidal, decided against it, then was killed by
Tory
. Pretty well done, in my opinion, how she wormed her way into the Chief's life/affairs in a few scenes. I'm glad they're giving her this direction, she was a boring and almost pointless character previously.

Overall, decent episode. And I like how once the humans found out they are Cyclons, they begin to act all different than normal.

Now, on to what bothers me about this show.

The heavy influence on the press. These people are on the run, they are being hunted and basically a military type nation. Why so much influence on the mother ****ing press? I don't give a **** about the President being a *****, and giving herself total power. She should. There's not enough time to make decisions based on voting. She needs to have full power to get most of her people through the chaos and to Earth. Enough about politics, enough about the Press, on to the ****ing show.

I also have a newfound hatred for the word frak, and how ever they use it. The word needs to go away, and they need to start swearing for real. It's become my fingernails on a chalkboard whenever I hear it.

Also, I can't stand the person who plays the President. Her voice annoys me. Alot.

You're typed words annoy me a lot.

;)

Anyway, I'm of the opinion this show will end with the Galactica arriving on Earth several thousand years in our past, somewhere near Greece, with the survivors religion, beliefs, customs, etc influencing the Grecian area.

If this is the case, all those episodes which centered around politics (specifically democracy), philosophy, etc, would make much more sense in the greater context.

The Galactica fleet becoming Greece on Earth might be an obvious way to end the show, but it'd make sense. Having them arrive at any other time in Earth's history seems less likely to make as much sense, anyway.

Just to be clear, is the miniseries what you're supposed to watch before Season 1? Because my Acting teacher is lending me the series disc by disc, but all he gave me today was the 4 hour (3, without ads) mini.

I can't frakking wait to start watching this show.

Congratulations! I think you're going to love it. I know I'm hooked.

The mini-series is basically just a three hour pilot, so yes, you're supposed to watch it.

I'm going to spoil this. I don't have a source for it, but trust me on this:

They get to Earth in the 22nd century. It explains a couple of things. First, the 13th tribe arrived on Earth around 3000 years before this. . .around the founding of Ancient Greece. Also, it explains why the Twelve Colonies of Kobol have 21st century clothing and ideals, with better space faring technology. Because they followed a similar progression with Earth.

That does make a lot of sense. I like that better than the predictable ending of them showing up in the past (Ancient Greece).

So....

can we now officially say this show jumped the shark?

can we now officially say this show jumped the shark?

After last night's episode?

Yes.

I'm going to watch it because it's only got about 12 episodes left and I didn't spend all that time and money on the DVDs just to give up.

But. . .what the HELL are they thinking!?

Yeah, i know... right?

Was it the cat thing that bothered you the most, or the completely out of character happenings the entire episode? I'm still trying to decide myself.

Still, I'll forgive it. I've liked Season 4 far more than Season 3 so far, so overall at least its an improvement.

So I am ready to watch this show now. Now I know I could start with Season 1...but is there another "film" or special that comes before the first season?

I thought there was a made-for-TV movie....and then the show spun off that. Am I wrong?

No you're right. The viewing order works as follows:

The Mini-Series
Season 1-2
Razor Movie (which occurs towards the end of Season 2)
The Resistance Webisodes
Season 3-4

The Mini-Series is on the first disc of Season 1, so if you have the first season DVD set (Region 1), you're good to go. Its a 4-hour (3 hour actually, without the commercials) mini-series that worked as a back-door pilot to the series.

Basically, if you buy or rent the Season 1-3 DVD sets (Season 4 is still airing and thus unavailable on DVD as of yet) you're pretty much getting the whole she-bang. The only other thing you'd have to check out by itself is the Razor TV Movie (which aired and was released by itself on DVD last November). Its considered episode 4x00 (though its a 2-hour TV Movie), but I'm not sure if it will be included on the Season 4 DVD set, so you might want to pick it up separately. The weird thing about the Razor movie is that its episode 4x00, but takes place towards the end of Season 2 (well, its present day events do...there are Flashbacks in it which occur like 40 years before to a couple months before).

EDIT: Posted the BSG timeline I've been keeping up to date on another board in the next post. This should help with your viewing order (though be careful, as this includes the comics, novels, webisodes, Xbox Live video game, etc).

Here's a timeline I put together for the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica universe, including the television episodes, novels, comics (by Dynamite), video game (available on PC and through download on Xbox Live) and even the webisodes. I figured I'd post it here since we obviously have a large BSG fan-base on the boards (in turn due to the comics). The television episodes and webisodes are in bold, the comics are in italics, the novels are underlined, and the video game levels are in regular text (since many of them are just adaptations of battles in episodes)--to make differentiating between their respective media formats easier. The dates the episode/novel/comic/video game level take place on (in days after the Cylon attacks on the Colonies in the Mini-Series) are in parentheses. Anything which is unreleased or unaired is marked with "**" to indicate its placement is tentative and exact dates are unknown at the time. Any questions or comments, post them here. Enjoy!

I had to leave the show for a few minutes, and managed to miss the whole imaginary cat/complete change of character bits that everyone on the other boards are so up in arms about, so I thought this past episode was fantastic.

I love it that Adama is handing control of Galactica over to Tigh. Besides the obvious ramifications of "Ooh, he's a Cylon! What's he gonna do?!," I also love that he's doing it because he's too close to Roslin. I'm not an overly sentimental guy, but I still think that's pretty sweet.

Personally, I just think this season's getting better. It's still not as good as Season 1, but that season was just about the finest 20 episodes of television ever produced, so the only place it really could ever go was down (unless anyone actually thought they could maintain the same level of awsome for four seasons).

Regardless, I'm still loving it. I know some people think it's jumped the shark, but I think it's just getting better and better.

Overall, Season 4 is almost as good as Season 1 (or at least far better than Season 2 or 3). This episode just bothered me (specifically the cat thing and the way Adama handed over the reigns to Tigh). However, the vast majority of Season 4 has definitly been quality television.
